Casa Moro: The Second Cookbook, by Samuel Clark, Samantha Clark

In their first outing, The Moro Cookbook, Samuel and Samantha Clark—chef-owners of Moro, one of London’s most talked-about restaurants—captivated readers with their passionate insights into the culinary traditions of Spain, North Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Casa Moro, their second cookbook, is a very personal reflection on the Clarks’ culinary influences. With its heady blend of Arabic and Hispanic dishes, the book evokes their early travels, their first discovery of Spain and Morocco, and the small village in the heart of Moorish Andalusia that has become their second home. The recipes range from infinitely variable mezzes and tapas to the slow-cooked meat stews and fresh salads of Morocco, but this is much more than a collection of recipes. Casa Moro is a culinary journey, resonating with history, tradition, and delectable dishes.

Great Book
By Sam Smith
This is an excellent book, however many of the ingredients are very hard if not impossible to find. If you don't have access to a Spanish cooking supply shop, I would pass on this book. In addition, some of the recipes need a bit of work. I've tried several soup recipes and all of them were lacking in flavor and needed additional work to repair.

Los Angeles TimesBestseller

Stress Test is the story of Tim Geithner’s education in financial crises.

As president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and then as President Barack Obama’s secretary of the Treasury, Timothy F. Geithner helped the United States navigate the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, from boom to bust to rescue to recovery. In a candid, riveting, and historically illuminating memoir, he takes readers behind the scenes of the crisis, explaining the hard choices and politically unpalatable decisions he made to repair a broken financial system and prevent the collapse of the Main Street economy. This is the inside story of how a small group of policy makers—in a thick fog of uncertainty, with unimaginably high stakes—helped avoid a second depression but lost the American people doing it. Stress Test is also a valuable guide to how governments can better manage financial crises, because this one won’t be the last.

Stress Test reveals a side of Secretary Geithner the public has never seen, starting with his childhood as an American abroad. He recounts his early days as a young Treasury official helping to fight the international financial crises of the 1990s, then describes what he saw, what he did, and what he missed at the New York Fed before the Wall Street boom went bust. He takes readers inside the room as the crisis began, intensified, and burned out of control, discussing the most controversial episodes of his tenures at the New York Fed and the Treasury, including the rescue of Bear Stearns; the harrowing weekend when Lehman Brothers failed; the searing crucible of the AIG rescue as well as the furor over the firm’s lavish bonuses; the battles inside the Obama administration over his widely criticized but ultimately successful plan to end the crisis; and the bracing fight for the most sweeping financial reforms in more than seventy years. Secretary Geithner also describes the aftershocks of the crisis, including the administration’s efforts to address high unemployment, a series of brutal political battles over deficits and debt, and the drama over Europe’s repeated flirtations with the economic abyss.

Secretary Geithner is not a politician, but he has things to say about politics—the silliness, the nastiness, the toll it took on his family. But in the end, Stress Test is a hopeful story about public service. In this revealing memoir, Tim Geithner explains how America withstood the ultimate stress test of its political and financial systems.

Review
A Financial Times Best Book of 2014

“He’s written a really good book — we might as well get that out of the way, as so much else about Timothy F. Geithner remains unsettled… There’s hardly a moment in Geithner’s story when the reader feels he is being anything but straightforward — a near-superhuman feat for someone who spent so much time in public life defending himself from careless and dishonest personal attacks. The decisions he made are easier to criticize than they are to improve upon. I doubt many readers will put his book down and think the man did anything but his best. On his feet he might have stammered and wavered. That in itself was always a sign he was unusually brave.” –Michael Lewis, New York Times Book Review

“An intimate take on the financial crisis… gripping… conveys in visceral terms just how precarious things were during the crisis, just how frightened many first responders were, and just what an achievement it was to avert a major depression… [Geithner] demonstrates that he can discuss economics in an accessible fashion, making the situation the country faced in 2008 and 2009 tactile, comprehensible—and harrowing—to the lay reader. Along the way, he also gives us a telling portrait of himself.” –New York Times

“A how-to manual for anyone faced with a financial crisis… Mr Geithner was known for his brutal candor, and as an author, he does not disappoint.” —The Economist

“A fascinating memoir about life in the maelstrom of the financial crisis… Earlier books have described much of what happened that September, but Geithner was present for all the frantic meetings, the thousands of phone calls — and in the case of Lehman, the failure to find a buyer that could keep it alive. New problems cropped up almost weekly, if not daily. He explains each in easy-to-understand language and what the issues were that shaped the responses… There could be another crisis someday, of course, but what Geithner and his colleagues did has made one far less likely.” –USA Today

“Sharply worded and candid memoir.” —Financial Times

“Geithner does an admirable job of explaining the origins and complexities of the crisis for the average person. But there’s enough detail and retrospective lessons-learned to make it valuable for students of financial history….fast-paced and colorful….Stress Test goes beyond other crisis books.” –Los Angeles Times

“Throughout Stress Test, one gains a deep appreciation for the heart-pumping decisions made by Geithner and his colleagues from 2007 through 2012. And he makes a compelling case that overhwelming force is necessary in crisis, and that the measures taken by the Fed and two successive administrations prevented even more pain for ordinary Americans.” –WashingtonPost.com

“An unsparing insider’s account of the financial crisis from the former Secretary of the Treasury, unpacking the hard decisions and terrible trade-offs that devastated the economy but staved off a deep, lasting depression.” —TIME.com

“The central irony ofStress Test, the new memoir by former U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, is that a guy who was accused of being a lousy communicator while in office has penned a book that is such a good read…I’ve now read four or five of these first drafts of the history of the Great Recession, and I believeStress Testrepresents the biggest contribution of the bunch.” —Bill Gates

“Sensational . . . Tim’s book will forever be the definitive work on what causes financial panics and what must be done to stem them when they occur.” —Warren Buffett

“Very few important subjects in American history have been the subject of as much disinformation and deliberate distortion as the events surrounding the financial crisis that broke in 2008. Tim Geithner’s candid, clear-headed, and refreshingly self-effacing account of his role in formulating the federal government’s response is a very welcome antidote. Geithner’s book is a triple threat: it is first-rate economic history, insightful political science, and, most important, a cogent exposition of the importance of adhering to the policies adopted in the aftermath of the crisis if we are to succeed in diminishing the likelihood of any recurrence.” —Barney Frank

“Stress Test is an absolutely compelling account of the financial crisis, written in a clear, graceful style with striking honesty at every step along the way. Timothy Geithner brings a complex story to life with telling anecdotes and personal reflections.” —Doris Kearns Goodwin

“This is a lucid, fascinating, and extremely important book. Every American should read it. Geithner does something unusual: he engages in substance. With both insight and humility, plus a good dose of wry humor, he explains what really happened during the financial crisis. No matter your political persuasion, you will find this book educational, enlightening, and interesting.” —Walter Isaacson

“The country owes Tim Geithner great appreciation for his role in overcoming the financial crisis of 2008. He has now indebted it further with writing a thoughtful, very readable and informative account of the conduct of policy at the edge of disaster.”—Henry A. Kissinger

A Captivating Retelling of the GFC from the Man at the Helm
By Wilson Morcom
Timothy Geithner opens the book with an anecdote on how his poor communication skills resulted in a bungled press conference in the early days of the Obama administration which led to additional market instability. Geithner is unusually honest in his own self-assessment and in recognizing how important the soft skills such as communication were to his job. As a famous politician (well, small town mayor) once said - "a good man knows his limitations". Geithner is quite self aware, in terms of his predilection for policy substance over press release form as well as his suitability for regulatory work over investment banking riches. This self-awareness informs his telling of the Global Financial Crisis from an insider’s perspective.

It is refreshing, therefore, to read a book on a complex subject that is clear and easy to read and understand. At the end of the day, all financial crises are borne of the panic that ensues from borrowing short and lending long and not having a sufficient capital buffer to weather the storm. However, the fog of the daily battle makes it challenging to develop a cohesive and consistent response to the many “crises of the day”. This book sets out a philosophy that guided the regulators through the maze and should be a guidepost for those managing our way through the next financial crisis.

One of the key statistics mentioned is that the government spent about $2 trillion in rescuing the financial system but generated a positive return of $150 billion. The lesson of this financial crisis (as well as military crises as Colin Powell famously noted) is that a response of overwhelming force is the most effective way to win and the cheapest long term solution.

Also interesting (but not surprising) is his description of the political wrangling that ensued when the regulators were developing the post-crisis response. The Dodd-Frank Act and the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau were essentially political outcomes - a result of the art of the possible. Geithner also makes a point of praising Obama for not being swayed by side issues - giving fee rein to the bureaucrats to develop policy unencumbered by polls, perception and politics . I suspect that it will take a generation for Obama’s legacy to be clearly understood - but I agree with the author that his success in averting a great depression will be recognized as his great achievement.

The book is both entertaining as a memoir from one of the key protagonists and as a text for future regulators on how best to respond to a financial crisis.

A Plan Beats No Plan
By C.P.M.
The Great Recession and financial panic of 2007-2009 has a lot of myths and stories surrounding it concerning what the government did or didn't do, what it should've done and shouldn't have done, and the motives of those working behind the scenes. Former Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner is one of those lighting rod figures from the crisis who, because of his relative anonymity prior to the crisis, is often misunderstood or caricatured. In this book, Sec. Geithner not only dispels the myths about his own background, but also provides a unique insight and perspective on the panic from one of the only two people in high government who was there from beginning to end (Fed chairman Ben Bernanke being the other one). But his story, and his experiences with financial panics, doesn't start in 2007, but rather starts with his upbringing in a family that was involved in international development and finances from when he was very young, always moving from one country to another and spending very little time in America. From there, it moves on to his time as a civil servant in the Treasury department's international wing, dealing with the crises brought on the by the Asian financial panics of the 1990s and eventual rising to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in charge of the international branch. From those times Mr. Geithner picks up a lot of invaluable experience in financial panics, what makes them better, and what makes them worse. From there he makes the surprising leap to head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the most powerful of the regional Federal Reserve Boards in the country. And that is where the main story begins as Mr. Geithner describes the events that led to the panic, the actions he took as FRBNY chair and then Treasury Secretary, why they took them, and why they were necessary even if they were both unpopular and counterintuitive. The book reaches its climax with the stress tests backed by promises of capital injections for those banks the tests deemed were in need of them. Once the results of the test are released in the spring of 2009 a certain measure of calm enters the markets and the last chapters feel like a denouement as he deals with the Eurozone crisis and the toxic politics of Washington following the ascendancy of the Tea Party in 2010. What is surprising is how in the first half of the book Mr. Geithner seems to undersell himself, not out of a sense of humility, but because he genuinely seemed to believe that there were other people better or more knowledgeable than him. From my perspective, it seems like a no-brainer that Pres. Obama tapped him to be Treasury Secretary, even if he was a terrible salesman (a flaw that he readily, even jokingly, admits to being). What is also great about this book is how much value it has beyond being another account of the financial crisis. He does a great job of explaining why the unpopular decisions the Fed, the FDIC, and the Treasury took were necessary to save the economy, even if he falls into the trap of using too much of the jargon of Wall St. to explain it. I believe this book has value not only as an account of this financial crisis, but as a guide to how to handle future financial, indeed any, crisis in the future. As Mr. Geithner is fond of saying, a plan beats no plan. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the true story behind the financial crisis and the Great Recession of 2007-2009.

This book is the single best insider look at the events leading up to the financial crisis that was unleashed in September 2008. Mr. Geithner's text is well written, often humorous, and clearly describes the policy dilemmas faced by the Federal Reserve (Bernanke), the U.S. Treasury (Paulson), and the FDIC (Baird). The book is not technical and can be read by anyone interested in one key person's insights and role in events leading up to the global financial crisis and actions taken through 2012. Mr. Paulson has published his views from Treasury and we are waiting for Dr. Bernanke to do the same for his role as Fed chairman. For now, it is not possible to understand how actions taken by both the Federal Reserve and Treasury prevented the housing collapse from creating far more economic damage than it did without reading this book.

Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of all time

Winner of the Booker of Bookers

Saleem Sinai is born at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, the very moment of India’s independence. Greeted by fireworks displays, cheering crowds, and Prime Minister Nehru himself, Saleem grows up to learn the ominous consequences of this coincidence. His every act is mirrored and magnified in events that sway the course of national affairs; his health and well-being are inextricably bound to those of his nation; his life is inseparable, at times indistinguishable, from the history of his country. Perhaps most remarkable are the telepathic powers linking him with India’s 1,000 other “midnight’s children,” all born in that initial hour and endowed with magical gifts.

This novel is at once a fascinating family saga and an astonishing evocation of a vast land and its people–a brilliant incarnation of the universal human comedy. Twenty-five years after its publication, Midnight’s Children stands apart as both an epochal work of fiction and a brilliant performance by one of the great literary voices of our time.

Amazon.com Review
Anyone who has spent time in the developing world will know that one of Bombay's claims to fame is the enormous film industry that churns out hundreds of musical fantasies each year. The other, of course, is native son Salman Rushdie--less prolific, perhaps than Bollywood, but in his own way just as fantastical. Though Rushdie's novels lack the requisite six musical numbers that punctuate every Bombay talkie, they often share basic plot points with their cinematic counterparts. Take, for example, his 1980 Booker Prize-winning Midnight's Children: two children born at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947--the moment at which India became an independent nation--are switched in the hospital. The infant scion of a wealthy Muslim family is sent to be raised in a Hindu tenement, while the legitimate heir to such squalor ends up establishing squatters' rights to his unlucky hospital mate's luxurious bassinet. Switched babies are standard fare for a Hindi film, and one can't help but feel that Rushdie's world-view--and certainly his sense of the fantastical--has been shaped by the films of his childhood. But whereas the movies, while entertaining, are markedly mediocre, Midnight's Children is a masterpiece, brilliant written, wildly unpredictable, hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure.

Rushdie's narrator, Saleem Sinai, is the Hindu child raised by wealthy Muslims. Near the beginning of the novel, he informs us that he is falling apart--literally: I mean quite simply that I have begun to crack all over like an old jug--that my poor body, singular, unlovely, buffeted by too much history, subjected to drainage above and drainage below, mutilated by doors, brained by spittoons, has started coming apart at the seams. In short, I am literally disintegrating, slowly for the moment, although there are signs of an acceleration. In light of this unfortunate physical degeneration, Saleem has decided to write his life story, and, incidentally, that of India's, before he crumbles into "(approximately) six hundred and thirty million particles of anonymous, and necessarily oblivious, dust." It seems that within one hour of midnight on India's independence day, 1,001 children were born. All of those children were endowed with special powers: some can travel through time, for example; one can change gender. Saleem's gift is telepathy, and it is via this power that he discovers the truth of his birth: that he is, in fact, the product of the illicit coupling of an Indian mother and an English father, and has usurped another's place. His gift also reveals the identities of all the other children and the fact that it is in his power to gather them for a "midnight parliament" to save the nation. To do so, however, would lay him open to that other child, christened Shiva, who has grown up to be a brutish killer. Saleem's dilemma plays out against the backdrop of the first years of independence: the partition of India and Pakistan, the ascendancy of "The Widow" Indira Gandhi, war, and, eventually, the imposition of martial law.

We've seen this mix of magical thinking and political reality before in the works of Gnter Grass and Gabriel Garca Mrquez. What sets Rushdie apart is his mad prose pyrotechnics, the exuberant acrobatics of rhyme and alliteration, pun, wordplay, proper and "Babu" English chasing each other across the page in a dizzying, exhilarating cataract of words. Rushdie can be laugh-out-loud funny, but make no mistake--this is an angry book, and its author's outrage lends his language wings. Midnight's Children is Salman Rushdie's irate, affectionate love song to his native land--not so different from a Bombay talkie, after all. --Alix Wilber

An outstanding literary creation. Take the plunge, learn, be challenged, and enjoy.
By Ser Zen
What an outstanding novel, what a great invitation to follow the literary imagination and excellent writing capabilities of a very creative, and daring cosmopolitan mind!
Centre stage belongs to the complex linkages among intimate, personal, family, ethnic, and social class tensions between keeping (Muslim-Hindu) traditions and/or transforming them, as well as between building radical ethnic-oriented nationalisms or contributing to the creation of more cosmopolitan societies in what has been called the Indian sucontinent during most of the 20th century. What is at stake, both simultaneously and inseparably, is the formation of a united nation (India) or of different nations (a Hindu-based India, and a Muslim-based East/West Pakistan, or Pakistan and former East Pakistan as independent Bangladesh), the creation of a united, close-knitted family or of several loosely interrelated domestic groups, and the forging of coherent individuals or internally-conflicting personalities. Nation-building-oriented competing stories about history, tradition, identity, faith, love, hatred, treason, and loyalty are compellingly, and imaginatively intertwined with family/personal-building-oriented ones.
So the characters are always complexly embedded in interpersonal, family, social class, and ethnic-national relationships. The main character's life is inseparably linked to the conflicting formation processes of both his family, of his family's place in social class terms, and of India (Pakistan, and Bangladesh). In fact, the novel's name comes from the coincidence of several births happening at the same time: the independence of several culturally and politically heterogeneous territories from the British Crown in order to launch themselves in the challenge of forming India, the main character's birth, and that of a large group of other children ---all born at midnight, on...
According to my understanding, the main character and the other "midnight's children" represent the constantly challenged, threatened hope for the building of better futures, but not in a Hollywood style of a Happy End embedded in an individualistic ideology. Life is, whether we like it or not, immensely more complex. Take the plunge, learn, be challenged, and enjoy.

Epic in scope, brilliant and flawed
By D. Friedman
Although Midnight’s Children is proclaimed as Rushdie’s masterpiece, I did not enjoy it as much as I did Shalimar the Clown. It’s epic in its scale and ambition. There is so much here it may be difficult for some readers (myself included) to digest it all. There are a staggering number of minor characters, all realized with Rushdie’s customary skill. There are many passages of brilliance, wit, and wisdom. But these multitudinous characters slither in and out of the narrative making it difficult at times to follow, particularly considering that a novel of this length and complexity does not lend itself to a reading of one, or even just a few sittings. It is in the form of a three-volume “confession” by the narrator, Saleem Sinai, who is born at the exact midnight moment of India’s birth as a nation (hence the novel’s title), to his consort and fianc, Padma. To add to the difficulties many of the characters have multiple names.

Rushdie employs some literary devices that detracted from my enjoyment of the novel. At times it almost seemed as if he was indulging in technique for technique’s sake. One device is repetition. For instance, there’s constant thematic repetition of “knees and nose, nose and knees”, Saleem being the nose and his arch-enemy and rival, Shiva, being the knees. After a while my response was I get it, their fates are intertwined, but I don’t get why I need to read this formula yet again (maybe I don’t get it? I’m not even quite sure why the formula couldn’t be reversed. Are knees aggressive and the nose sensuous? A lot of hammering on one nail.) Another is Rushdie’s use of obscure vocabulary without any clear purpose that I can understand (even when I understand the words without looking them up). For example the words apocrine and eccrine keep popping up in the narrative without any clear reference (at least to me).

Another problem I had, particularly with Volume 3 (spoiler alert – don’t read further if you want to remain in suspense), is where we learn of the identity of “the Widow”, who is the villain of the piece. It’s Indira Gandhi. The anti-Gandhi theme introduced here seems a bit overheated. Although Indira Gandhi did do some bad things, particularly the suspension of democracy during the “Emergency” of 1975-77, which is the background for a significant part of Volume 3, they seem pretty small beer when compared with the great historical crimes of the twentieth century. In fact she seems not obviously better or worse than many of the Prime Ministers India has experienced before and afterwards. So the tone of outrage and focus on her as the villainous “Widow”, while it may have been understandable from Rushdie’s perspective at the time Midnight’s Children was completed (1979), seems rather dated.

All that said it would be unfair not to note that there are many passages in Midnight’s Children of great beauty and wisdom. Rushdie is unparalleled in capturing the sweep of life in India and Pakistan (and Bangladesh) and his genius for this is at its most expressive in this novel. He is also a writer of great learning and knowledge of what he writes -- knowledge which is fully on display here (in a good sense). The Bombay of which he writes is the Bombay of his own childhood; he himself was born in 1947, the year of India’s independence, the same as Saleem, the “hero” of the piece. Along the way, he gives us all sectors of Indian society, from the wealthy and privileged to the underclasses, and he does it with a true novelist’s eye (and nose!) for the telling detail and without editorializing. He succeeds in interweaving the private incidents in the lives of the characters he has created with historical events of the period: from the early part of the twentieth century to the late 70s, when the book was completed. It’s just a shame that because of their sheer number we don’t get to know some of them better. But maybe that’s inherent in Rushdie’s method; he himself has acknowledged his debt to Charles Dickens, and I guess one should no more expect to probe the depths of Nussie the Duck’s or Parvati-the-Witch’s psyches any more than those of Mr. Micawber or “Barkis is willing”.

Great and worth the effort to read it.
By Roadhouse
This is an extraordinary book. It is rich in imagination, language, complexity and story-telling skill. In Rushdie's hands, the most improbable, wacky, plot lines seem plausible. And, there's plenty in the book to make you stop and laugh out loud. This is no small matter given that the backdrop of the story is the establishment and early years of India and Pakistan- a miserable 25 years with ordinarily very little to smile about.

When I finished the book I knew two things: I had engaged with a piece of important literature, and a second reading (perhaps in six months) would be even more revelatory of the book's creative genius.

Book 2 of the PORTER SISTERS series. This can be enjoyed as a standalone book. No cliffhanger.

Ash Decker represented everything I thought I knew about life and everything I was afraid of all at the same time. At first, he was just a man who spilled a drink on me at a bar. I didn’t know who he was. I didn’t know he was famous or that he’d be working with my sister’s husband on the set of his next movie. I didn’t know we’d be crossing paths over and over, and I definitely didn’t know that one night of fun would lead to a lifetime of consequences.

So when things got real, I did what I did best. I ran. I ran away from him. I ran away from everything that ever was and everything that ever could be. Until our paths crossed again, setting my destiny on fire and sealing my fate forever.

The discovery of ancient Egypt and the development of Egyptology are momentous events in intellectual and cultural history. The history of Egyptology is the story of the people, famous and obscure, who constructed the picture of ancient Egypt that we have today, recovered the Egyptian past while inventing it anew, and made a lost civilization comprehensible to generations of enchanted readers and viewers thousands of years later. This, the first of a three-volume survey of the history of Egyptology, follows the fascination with ancient Egypt from antiquity until 1881, tracing the recovery of ancient Egypt and its impact on the human imagination in a saga filled with intriguing mysteries, great discoveries, and scholarly creativity. Wonderful Things affirms that the history of ancient Egypt has proved continually fascinating, but it also demonstrates that the history of Egyptology is no less so. Only by understanding how Egyptology has developed can we truly understand the Egyptian past.

Review

"Thompson offers a well written, informed, and at times exciting account of the exceptional accomplishments of the individuals and institutions that pioneered the field of Egyptology. Jaromir Malek's informed foreword offers a critical context for unfolding the Egyptological undertaking."--Choice

"Wonderful Things is a remarkable achievement: a scholarly work packed with facts but one which is also genuinely readable. It is ambitious in its scope and detail. To follow the growth of an arcane but also a highly romantic branch of learning becomes in Thompson's book something close to an adventure. The author successfully conveys his infectious enthusiasm for the subject but writes with a degree of detachment that allows him to be refreshingly and occasionally almost ruthlessly trenchant and critical."--Jaromir Malek

"Thompson's account demonstrates the multiple array of events, personalities, political developments and intellectual inclinations that contributed to shaping the field of Egyptology as it emerged as a self-conscious discipline. Moving beyond the familiar recounting of great discoveries in Egypt, . . . Wonderful Things seeks to demonstrate the power and complexities of Egyptological activities in fashioning the story of ancient Egypt. We learn much about the less acknowledged characters in the narratives of Egyptology, appreciating the different types of contributions individuals made beyond the practices of 'digging and writing'. The new insights Thompson provides on those who simply 'made things happen' is not only fascinating but serves as an extremely valuable contribution to the evaluation of Egyptology's legacy. This is an incisive anatomy of a discipline that challenges our all too familiar assumptions about how Egyptology came to be."--Stephanie Moser

"Wonderful Things: A History of Egyptology: From Antiquity to 1881 is an excellent first installment on something the field has long been lacking--a comprehensive history of Egyptology. After surveying the Greeks and Romans, medieval writers, and the European scholars and travelers of the Renaissance and Enlightenment, Jason Thompson hits full stride with the nineteenth-century. The French expedition and Champollion's decipherment gave birth to modern Egyptology, and this is the century in which Thompson, the author of definititve biographies of Egyptologists and Orientalists Gardiner Wilkinson and Edward William Lane, feels most fully at home. After the Description de l'Égypte and Champollion come Richard Lepsius, Heinrich Brugsch, Samuel Birch, and Auguste Mariette. All the great figures and landmarks are there, and many lesser ones as well. Both scholars and general readers will eagerly anticipate the second and third volumes to carry the story down to the present."--Donald M. Reid

"This well-researched and authoritative account of the history of Egyptology will become the definitive reference tool for anyone interested in the development of this academic discipline. In this first volume of his study, the author has delved deep into the surviving archives to undercover the growth of Egyptology from antique times until the astonishing success of Mariette. Unlike previous works which only dealt with the highlights of Egyptian archaeology, he covers both the academic and archaeological aspects of the subject and shines a light on many unsung heroes of Egyptology who had been edged out of the limelight by the more well known. When completed, this study will form a lasting memorial to the men and women who in their various ways rescued the past of Egypt."--Morris Bierbrier

"Jason Thompson has written what is by far the best history of Egyptology yet. Filled with fascinating facts and characters, Thompson's book is comprehensive and eminently readable and certain to become the standard history of the field for many years to come."--Kent Weeks

"At last a definitive history, which does justice not only to the major players but to lesser lights as well. Wonderful Things will be immensely valuable."--Brian Fagan, author of The Rape of the Nile

"Remarkably thorough and yet refreshingly readable, this action-packed history of Egyptology is driven by some extraordinary characters--mostly men but some notable women--who needed to learn everything they could about the culture, land, and language of ancient Egypt. As much a study of European colonialism in Egypt as a historiography of seventeenth- to nineteenth-century scholarship, this volume is an absolute necessity for anybody with an interest in pharaonic Egypt."--Kara Cooney

"Wonderful Things is not only a definitive study of the early history of Egyptology, but an entrancing read. Thompson knows how to tell a story, and does so in vivid yet measured prose, which brings what could be a dull subject to life in memorable ways. He wears his scholarship lightly, which makes this beautifully crafted book a joy for the general reader."--Brian Fagan, Current World Archaeology

"Wonderful things is a rare treasure of Egyptology and historiography, based on meticulous, often very obscure, research and turned into a mellifluous narrative. This is no catalogue of heroes and villains, but a balanced and measured account that is a definitive history and a first-rate read at the same time. One eagerly awaits the two forthcoming volumes in this remarkable story, written by a scholar with considerable academic and literary gifts. . . . By any standards, this book is a remarkable achievement."--Antiquity

"Historian Jason Thompson has written a book that comprehensively addresses the history of Egyptology from its earliest inklings up to the year 1881. It's titled Wonderful Things and is, itself, a wonderful thing. . . . It's not often that I find a book in which I can confidently state that I found something interesting on nearly every page. And as one who likes to consider himself an historian of archaeology, I learned much. Anyone with a serious interest in Egyptology surely will benefit from reading Wonderful Things. This volume is the first of three and I eagerly await the two which will follow."--Donald P. Ryan, KMT

"A book that the Egyptological world and, surely, the world at large was waiting for for a long time. It fills a gap that was getting bigger as time passed by."--André J. Veldmeijer, PalArch

"A comprehensive and thoroughly-researched work, in which a huge quantity of data has been synthesised and expounded. . . . The book is a mine of information and succeeds in being both authoritative and highly readable."--John H. Taylor, ASTENE Bulletin

"Wonderful Things deserves to become the essential resource for decades to come."--Rosalind Janssen, Egyptian Archaeology

"While Wonderful Things would be an entertaining and informative read for any interested person, it should be considered essential reading for every Egyptologist and aspiring Egyptologist."--Melinda Nelson-Hurst, JARCE

"This is an incredible yet concise and most readable account of the really formative years in Egyptology. Thompson is the well-known author of major individual studies of some of the 'greats' (E.W. Lane, J.G. Wilkinson) and his productivity is enormous. Hopefully it will not be long before the trilogy will be completed and become an essential and very worthy addition to the shelves of every Egyptologist, professional or dedicated amateur."--Peter A. Clayton, Ancient Egypt

The Answer to How Is Yes: Acting on What Matters, by Peter Block

People keep asking ""How?"" as a defense against living their life, says best-selling author Peter Block. In this witty, insightful award-winning book, Block shows that many standard solutions and improvement efforts, reinforced by most of the literature, keep people paralyzed. Here he places the ""how to"" craze in perspective and teaches individuals, workers, and managers ways to act on what they know. This in turn allows them to reclaim their freedom and capacity to create the kind of world they want to live in. Block's ""elements of choice"" - the characteristic of a new workplace and a new world based on more positive values - include self-mentoring, investing in relationships, accepting the unpredictability of life, and realizing that the individual prospers only when the community does.

From Booklist
The new approach to change management that is presented here will completely flummox control freaks. Block posits a refreshing series of truths that, if adopted, will transform workplaces into journeys of meaning. The best-selling author of Flawless Consulting (1981) and Stewardship (1993) insists that we ask the wrong question about accomplishing the important things in our lives, particularly in our place of employment. We too often ask "How?" which focuses too closely on the practical way of getting something done and is actually a subconscious expression of society's emphasis on control of people, time, and cost. Instead, our concentration should be focused on "Why?" In other words, we need to pay attention to what really matters to us personally, from heart-felt commitments in our private lives to the creation of projects in the workplace. To be able to act on what matters, explains Block, we must reclaim specific qualities, such as intimacy and idealism. Then we can tackle purposeful work as if we were social architects seeking engagement and change. Provocative and stimulating reading. Barbara Jacobs

From the Publisher
“Once again the best writer on life in the workplace turns conventions on its head. Substituting the why and what questions for the how questions should help all of us experience the freedom, success, growth, love, fun, and beauty in the workplace.” —Dennis W. Bakke, President, The AES Corporation

"Amazing! Just when I need to open myself to new ways of thinking, Peter Block opens up the next compelling image...the very path I need to explore next. Thank you, Peter, for the questions, paradox, confrontation and ultimately ‘answers’ that keep me alive and growing." —Kathleen D. Dannemiller, Dannemiller Tyson Associates, authors of Whole-Scale Change: Unleashing the Magic in Organizations

“This is the most important book Block has ever written, and we need to take him seriously (although he is, as always, quite witty.) If enough people say ‘Yes’ to the teachings in this book, we'll be able to stop floundering toward the future and create lives and work that are meaningful contributions to each other and to the future. Please say ‘yes.’” —Margaret Wheatley, author of Leadership and the New Science and Turning to One Another

“This is a journey of self-discovery much like the Inward Morning of Thoreau and in spirit not unlike the Confessions of Saint Augustine and Jean-Jacques Rousseau—cast in the contemporary mold of organizational culture. [Block’s] charm lies in his engaging style, seducing you to listen, mesmerized, as did the Sultan to Scheherazade. Here are the brilliant and sensitive ruminations of a wanderer on a journey in search for his voice, only to discover that it is the voice of everyman and everywoman speaking through him.” —Peter Koestenbaum Philosopher, Consultant, and author of The Inner Side of Greatness

Valuable questions, challenging book
By Andrew Adelmann
I read this a couple years back and have returned to it multiple times. I found the work quite thought-provoking, challenging - doesn't provide easy answers rather suggests questions to ask yourself, that may send you in new directions. I found myself agreeing with most of what he says - and while it's not immediately clear how to apply it to my job, career planning, or life in general, life is a journey and the right questions can take you in valuable new directions. Here are the "How" questions Block says people are too quick to focus on, followed by the "Yes questions" he suggests you think about instead:

How question 1: How do you do it?
Yes question 1: What refusal have I been postponing?

How question 2: How long will it take?
Yes question 2: What commitment am I willing to make?

How question 3: How much does it cost?
Yes question 3: What is the price I am willing to pay?

How question 4: How do you get those people to change?
Yes question 4: What is my contribution to the problem I am concerned with?

How question 5: How do we measure it?
Yes question 5: What is the crossroads at which I find myself at this point in my life/work?

How question 6: How are other people doing it successfully?
Yes question 6: What do we want to create together?

Block's basic critique is, people are generally too quick to get to the "how" questions, w/o properly considering what matters/what is really important. Very strong on acting on what matters, not waiting for others or depending on others - what is most important has to come from within.

I was wishing for some concrete examples tho of what it would look like if you acted on this stuff - but Block does note at some point that examples will be of limited use, as the way these precepts are implemented will vary considerably from place to place and person to person (asking for more information is usually just a stalling tactic, a strategy for putting off action). So I continue to be challenged and provoked by these questions.

Confirmation of questions, Manifesto for change
By Umesh Vyas
Peter Block is a Maister of Masters. His 'Flawless Consulting' is a great educational experience. The Answer to How .... truly shakes and wakes one up to ask the right questions about what matters.

I loved this book particularly because it articulated several fundamental questions that were traumatizing me. It was a relief to find Mr. Block raising similar doubts. It was a pleasure to join his quest for discovering directions for resolution.

Of particular significance is his placing Idealism, Intimacy, and Depth at the center. The disdain that attempts to practice these three qualities attracts is d-energizing. This book restores the faith. His 'How questions' are what we face - constantly. They have been creating an unease, difficult to fathom, impossible to articulate. Mr. Block's alternatives are 'what matters'. Further, they help conquer externalization of challenges and help pose questions to help one 'be the change you wish to see ...', a Gandhian quest.

This book also helps understand the 4 archetypes. I have, mostly, been an 'engineer', partly damned by education. I have known several 'economists'. My 'artistic' skepticism has remained suppressed. Fear of accusations of impracticality, being theoretical, and so on. With this book, my faith is restored. The path to social architecture is clear.

This is a very uncomfortable book to digest. It is a mirror that shames us for sacrificing 'what matters' for 'what is pragmatic'. A must-read and a must-apply.

Full of wisdom
By Joyce
In this book, management consultant Block addresses his concern that we often ask how to do something too soon and thereby trade our values for that which is practical and immediately useful. Instead of asking how, we need to consider what is worth doing. Asking "How?" emphasizes control of people, time, and cost. We need to be asking "Why?" which puts attention on what really matters to us personally, from commitments in our private lives to projects in the workplace. He points out that asking questions about "how," is often a way to avoid the deeper question of "why" and is a subtle way to avoid commitment and action.

Block challenges the basic assumptions of our culture. He sees as pervasive the two archetypes of engineer and economist--those of cause-and-effect and predictability. He would have us balance these with the creativity, imagination, mystery, and heart of two other archetypes: artist and architect. He holds up one of my favorite human beings, Christopher Alexander, as someone who embodies the integration of all four archetypes.

This book is full of wisdom. Here is one of the sentences I marked: "What will matter most to us, upon deeper reflection, is the quality of experience we create in the world, not the quantity of results."
