From a student perspective, avoid this book if possible

One of the worst, if not the worst, textbooks I have ever had to use. This may be a valuable reference for a practicing engineer who already has a good familiarity with the topics covered and wants to review theory. However, if one is looking to use this book as a guide to LEARN the topic of Advanced Soil Mechanics it is wholly inadequate. I do not believe there is a single example in the entire book that shows how the concepts discussed in the text can actually be applied. Yet the practice problems offered are some of the most perplexing and intentionally deceptive questions I have come across in my engineering curriculum, which has included several prior Geotechnical Engineering courses, so it is not as though I have no experience with soil mechanics. This discrepancy makes it quite hard to test your knowledge and know which errors are due to a misunderstanding of the concepts or due to making different initial assumptions or due to (as my professor suggested) the book sometimes making errors. Once again, this is not a desirable trait to have for a source of information being relied upon to learn a topic. If looking for an alternative, I have heard good things about the Das soil mechanics textbook, although I only have firsthand experience with Das's foundation engineering textbooks, which are great.

Excellent - There are ERRORS though

Since Wiley does not (apparently) publish errata for this book, I figured I'd post this here; it may be some help to some frustrated grad student (like me).
On pg 293, top of the first column, an equation for the change in horizontal stress is given (for Boussineq conditions). The first subtraction operator should be an addition operator and the first addition operator should be a subtraction operator. This modification renders a reasonable result in keeping with results from Poulos and Davis (1974).
Hope that spares you a couple hours of hair-tearing.
