What prompted me to publish a second edition of this book was a talk I had with Don Neff, the father of the 2008 and 2009 1600m State Champ, Danny Neff.� Don told me I should interview his son who is attending the University of Georgia.� When I interviewed Danny he told me he had read this book the winter of his junior year in high school.� He followed the recommendations and went on to win back to back Division I State 1600m titles. Wow, as they say in the roll and rock song "this really blew my mind." That's real reason to believe baby!

Danny's profile is included in this second edition and as expected his training and race preparation follow the norm set by the previous state champs. A great living example of "you too can do it."

About the Author
Chuck Bridgman started running track in 1973. He ran throughout grade school, high school and college. Attending Chaminade-Julienne High School in Dayton Ohio, he was coached by a state high school champion and NCAA Division I All-American. While in high school Chuck won several class AA state titles in cross country and track and set a state record. After high school, Chuck ran cross country and track for Ohio State. During the 1980's and 1990s Chuck was a registered high school track and cross country official and computerize the scoring for the Ohio high school state cross country meet. In the early nineties, Chuck started coaching cross country at Chaminade-Julienne where he aided one of his female cross country athletes in achieving multiple Division I state titles. Chuck continues to assist with coaching high school men's cross-country and competing in the mile.

Awesome book, Awesome Author

I bought this when my son was a Junior in High School. Mr. Bridgman has compiled a great list of previous State Mile Champions and how they prepared for their season. He has a note in the book that says you're welcome to contact him with comments and questions so I did. I received a reply to my email right away. Throughout the rest of Adam's Track season last year and part of his Senior Year this year, Mr.Bridgman answered questions and offered advice. Adam went on to win the 1600m at his State Meet this year and ended his High School career as a State Champion. When I sent Mr. Bridgman an email (along with a video of the race) he was just as excited as if he had been there himself. It takes a village to raise a child and I have found throughout the years that runners seem to be the most generous of souls. Mr. Bridgman certainly is and I highly recommend his book!!!

The four things you need to win the Ohio state high school 1600m are blind courage, unshakable faith, physical ability and the correct training program. This book cannot help you with the first three. However, through interviews with high school 1600m state champions, analysis of how these state 1600m champions trained this book will provide you with the training program to win the state 1600m in 4:10.

As a high school distance coach, I was curious whether there was a common set of factors for winning the high school state 1600m. I decided to find this out by interviewing as many state 1600m champions as I could to determine what they did to win. As I started talking with these state champions, my list of questions grew and expanded beyond strict training questions and included whether they cross trained, weight trained, what they ate before racing and many other factors that affected their performance. If I had known how much time this book was going to take, I would most likely never have started it. But in the end, I had a great time interviewing the runners, several of them Olympic runners including my boyhood idol, 1972 800m Olympic gold medal winner, Dave Wottle, and compiling and analyzing their amazing results.

In the end, this book details an ambitious journey - the search for and discovery of the methods and training schedules of 17 state champions over 40 years who collectively won 24 1600m titles, all distilled into a complete day by day five month workout and race schedule. We find out how important winter conditioning is to success, if weight training and cross training make a difference, when and how to taper, what to eat the night before, race day warm up and much more. This book contains a complete list of what's important and what's not important to run a 4:10 the first Saturday in June and win the state 1600m.

Perhaps most importantly for the reader, we even find proof that the training and workout schedules I created from the interviews are valid. The first edition of this book was published in 2008. That year, a high school junior was handed this book by his track coach. He followed the training and work out schedules contained in this book and went on to win the State title that year and the next. This second edition includes the interview with this two-time state champion and adds his data to the summary of results.

As my first coach told me, "Don't ever step onto the track, unless you plan on winning."

A powerful tool

I was asked to speak at the Ohio Track Coaches Clinic and I thought this book would be a great reference about track in Ohio. I am a coach in Michigan and read a lot of track books to help me stay competitive. My book came in the mail on Monday afternoon and I could not put it down until I finished it Monday evening. No matter which training method you prescribe to, this is a powerful tool for anyone interested in coaching track and field. This is a unique opportunity to get into the psyche of so many great athletes all at once. This book compares, contrasts and draws trends from the data in a way that is easy to use for any level coach. In the few days I have had it I have shared this information with several of my athletes and they are just as excited as I am.

In contrast to most theorizing, revolutionary leaders almost invariably come from the privileged, even aristocratic classes. The findings raise the issue of how well these leaders actually represent the peoples for which they claim to speak. They also prompt questions about the democratic nature of guerrilla organizations. If the leaders are so far removed, by social background and education, personal experience and ideological articulation, from their followers, how realistic is it to see the Left as a purveyor of progress? Perhaps it is more correct, say the contributors, to see their claims as manipulative tactics directed to resolving a struggle for power among competing elites.

The selection of topics ranges from the historical development of revolutionary struggles since Che Guevara (Halperin and Ratliff) to the more specific application and motivation behind them (Ybarra-Rojas and Tismaneanu). Chapters deal with the attempt to define a typology of revolutionary leaders (Radu) and their Western supporters (Hollander). Some authors (Payne, Horowitz) combine .these approaches.

Many issues examined in this volume are new, including an analysis of the gap between the internationalist outlook of the leaders and the parochial views of their followers. The violent organizations of the Left in Latin America are shown to be largely the functional result of upper- and middle-class leaders who combine an appeal to the lumpenproletariat at home with support of alienated Westerners to pursue their own elitist agenda.

Pastoral Leadership is a very good read. Most times when we think of the job Pastoring a church is it can overwhelm us. This book helps us as sheeps understand what we can do to assist a Pastor pastoring a church. By reminding him of what Jesus told the apostles to do and how Paul encouraged Timothy and others to do, we become understanding of the burden it can be. Therefore we learn to pray for our Pastors, and encourage them to teach and lead acording to the vision God has given them!

Here's the back story of why I wrote this book.�

A large Chinese technology corporate asked me to advise them on forming their own CVC. I told them that I would interview at least 20 to 30 of the top CVCs I already knew and ask them how they do everything from strategy to operations, investment committees, etc. I promised to compile this research and deliver it to them in a private form and also write a book to be shared with the public. I asked my CVC colleagues to share information that I could share with my client and also to sign off on case studies and stories to be included in this book. I also reached out to the large Rubicon VC database asking for stories and interviews from independent financial VCs, CEOs, lawyers and bankers and compiled the best stories with the best advice. I realized that this book was not just essential reading for existing CVCs and corporates thinking of launching CVCs, but that entrepreneurs and VCs thinking of raising CVC funding would also benefit from reading this book. If you outline the playbook of how a CVC invests, their process, what synergies they can unlock and related challenges, this is like reading the playbook of your opponent before going into the negotiation. A deeper understanding of this topic also helps the startups, angels, VCs and CVCs work together more effectively understanding each other's challenges to maximize chances for achieving the huge possible synergies. This is essential reading for anyone seeking to raise capital from these 50 CVCs and other CVCs. I truly believe that when CVC is done right it can move mountains for the startup. Practical learning of the opportunities & pitfalls of Corporate Venture Capital

Insightful collection of testimonials, advice and perspectives on the complex & long (but at the same time rewarding & essential) journey of Corporate Venture Capital (CVC). Rather than trying to come up with an hypothetical one-size-fits-all framework or sterile list of "success" tips, the lively tales spanning multiple decades (from the pioneers in the late 80s or early 90s to the newly-established CVCs), industries, stages (starting, running or shutting-down CVC) and outcomes (positive or negative) bring a much-needed nuance and balance.

All in all a timely read for both corporate executives thinking of (or already having) CVC, start-ups (as approaching and dealing with CVCs is substantially different from financial VCs) and VCs (considering corporates as potential LPs).

Jungle guide to Corporate Venture Capital: Must-have book for VCs and Entrepreneurs

Mr. Romans has followed his first book with a "must have" volume for VCs, entrepreneurs and Corporate VCs (of course.) Unlike his first volume this is a book that, after the first couple of chapters, can be used as a reference volume for CVCs. Of course it has great stories and histories but its main value to me (I am a VC) is as a "Jungle Guide to Corporate VCs." Something you must have sitting on your shelf when the topic comes up during a funding cycle.

I learned quite a bit about CVCs I thought I knew well. It turns out knowing the principles isn't the same as knowing the mission and habits which can be a bit guarded when in a deal situation. Hats off to Mr. Romans again.

Imagine sitting in a room with 51 people who have started and built the world's largest and most successful venture capital programs within corporations and listening to their advice. I read this book highlighting and taking notes of wisdom on almost ever single page. I stopped using bookmarks because everypage had a golden nugget about entrepreneurship, investing, growth, teams, partnerships, and leadership.

I build entrepreneur centers around Texas in partnership with cities, investment groups and corporations and this book helped me not only understand the investment world deeper but on the strategies for innovation and the ecosystem of buyers and sellers.

If you are an:
- entrepreneur - read this so you can build a product with an acquisition or strategic corporate partnership in mind

- investor - read this so you can learn to attract capital from corporations and work with them to fund your portfolio

- corporation - read this so you can learn from the successes and failures of other corporations who have grown through cvc.

About the Author

Harold D. Stolovitch, CPT, is a graduate of both McGill University in Canada and Indiana University in the United States where he completed a doctorate and postdoctoral work in instructional systems technology. With one foot solidly grounded in the academic world and the other in the workplace, he has conducted a large number of research studies and practical projects always aimed at achieving high learning and performance results.

In addition to creating countless instructional materials for a broad range of work settings, Stolovitch has authored more than 300 articles, research reports, book chapters, and books. He is a past president of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), former editor of thePerformance Improvement Journal, and editorial board member of several human resource and performance technology journals.

He has won numerous awards throughout his 40-year career, including the Thomas F. Gilbert Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement, ISPI's highest honor; Member-for-Life, the President's Award for Lifetime Achievements from the Canadian Society for Training and Development, their highest honor; and in 2004, he and his team won the ASTD Outstanding Research Award for their work on Incentives, Motivation, and Workplace Performance.

Stolovitch is an emeritus professor, Universit� de Montr�al, where he headed the instructional and performance technology graduate programs and was the School of Educational Sciences associate dean of research. He is also a former Distinguished Visiting Scholar and clinical professor of human performance at work, University of Southern California. Stolovitch is a principal of HSA Learning & Performance Solutions LLC.

Erica J. Keeps, CPT, holds a master's degree in educational psychology from Wayne State University, Detroit, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she later became a faculty member in the Graduate Business School Executive Education Center.

Her 40-year professional career has included training management positions with J.L. Hudson Co. and Allied Supermarkets and senior-level learning and performance consultant positions with a wide variety of organizations. Keeps has not only produced and supervised the production of numerous instructional materials and performance management systems, but has also published extensively on improving workplace learning and performance. She has provided staff development for instructional designers, training administrators, and performance consultants. Keeps has been acknowledged by many learning and performance leaders as a caring mentor and major influence in their careers.

She is a former executive board member of the ISPI; a past president of the Michigan Chapter of ISPI; and a Member-for-Life of the Michigan, Montreal, and Los Angeles ISPI chapters. Among her many awards for outstanding contributions to instructional and performance technology is ISPI's Distinguished Service Award for her extensive leadership roles. Highly Recommended!

This excellent book by Harold D. Stolovitch and Erica J. Keeps - researchers and consultants in workplace learning and performance - emphasizes making training fun and interactive. While their basic learning principles will be familiar to those in the field, they enliven their book with examples, exercises and research. The authors distinguish among training, instruction and education. They note the differences among various types of knowledge. Then, they explain the major factors that motivate people to learn and show how to apply these principles in hands-on teaching situations. Charts, illustrations, quizzes, and short chapter summaries enrich the book. We believe that even professionals already familiar with the field will enjoy this refreshing and lively look at how to help people learn. And if you are hiring trainers, this is what they should know.

Walking the Talk

Finally a book about training that uses training principles to deliver its message!
Stolovitch and Keeps little masterpiece "Telling Ain't Training", incorporates a variety of adult learning principles throughout the book like:
* telling the learner the benefit of the training,
* taking into account the different experiences of the learners,
* making sure the learner is actively involved and particpating in the learning, and
* leading the learner to action.
The reader/learner is led systematically to an realization of why transmitting (telling) information doesn't work as well as transforming (including practice and feedback) the learner. The reader/learner's active involvement is ensured through constant examples, analogies and activities that are fun and always to the point.
As someone who both develops and delivers training programs, I found this book to be highly informative (it discusses the current research in learning and development), extremely well focussed and ultimately very useful. I have already incorporated at least 5 of the book's wonderful little nuggets into my training and development activities.

Good content, high price, poor Kindle formatting

As far as I can tell, this is a book of great content. Certainly all the other reviewers think so. The print and Kindle formats are both fairly expensive. The challenge: the Kindle formatting is a mess. It's readable, but just barely. No page break between chapters, lots of multi-column tables that are inserted as one column, so you can't tell which items are in column A and which are in B.

I recommend that you buy the book in print; the Kindle version isn't worth it.
