About the Author
Steve Hickner is a film director at DreamWorks Animation. He has directed the films The Prince of Egypt and Bee Movie. He has also worked as storyboard artist on Peabody and Sherman, Shrek Forever After, Over the Hedge, Madagascar, Shark Tale, and Antz. Hickner has worked at a number of studios, including Walt Disney Animation Studios and Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation, where he was a producer for An American Tail: Fievel Goes West and Balto. He recently began working on DreamWorks’ theme park and location-based projects. He frequently lectures at universities throughout the United States. Hickner is the author of Animation Rules! 52 Ways to Achieve Creative Success. His first book, Animating Your Career, was published in 2013. Steve Hickner's Animation Rules! lays out 55 rules for everyone who works in animation and other creative pursuits. Although the book is aimed at those involved in creative mediums the truths that he presents and illustrates are good for whatever career you are wanting to develop. His "rules" are presented in such a way that they grab your attention and hit home. Bloody Biscay is the story of the Luftwaffe's only long range maritime fighter unit -- V Gruppe/Kampfgeschwader 40 (V/KG 40) and its battles against the RAF, the US Army Air Force (USAAF) and the US Navy (USN) from July 1942 to August 1944 above the Bay of Biscay. Using personal accounts from both German and Allied survivors, Bloody Biscay relates the initial tribulations of the unit, the height of its success in spring and summer 1943, its battles against overwhelming odds and its eventual annihilation over the Normandy beaches in June 1944.

The book contains comprehensive appendices detailing the unit's commanding officers, known aircrew, all of its known 'kills' matched to Allied losses and its combat losses. It also describes the attack in which the famous British actor Leslie Howard perished and so clarifies the facts surrounding one of the most enduring mysteries of the 2nd World War.

Illustrated with 200 photographs, the vast majority of German origin, Bloody Biscay gives a graphic insight into the activites of V/KG 40.

Excellent History of the Bitter Battles over the Bay of Biscay!

Subtitled "The History of V Gruppe/Kampfgeschwader 40," this interesting volume traces the battles fought by that unit's Junkers 88 long-range fighters over the Bay of Biscay from July 1942 to August 1944. Tasked to protect U-boats traveling through the Bay, V/KG40 engaged in numerous combats against a variety of opponents from the RAF, USN and USAAF.

Chris Goss' book is a gem, chock-a-block with German and Allied aircrews' accounts of bitterly-fought combats over the unforgiving waters of the Atlantic. The variety of aircraft involved is quite something: JU 88s, Mossies, Beaufighters, Sunderlands, FW 200s, Whitleys, Wellingtons, Spits, B-24s, Halifaxes, even Horsa gliders! The book is well illlustrated with over 200 photos, many of them rare in-action shots. The book features numerous appendices filled with interesting information on the combatants.

In short, a wonderfully researched and written chronicle of a segment of the ETO air war little known to most. Highly recommended.

Correcting Misperceptions

The war at sea is oversimplified as torpedoes blasting convoys. It was more. The British actively attacked Nazi German U-boats; they bombed their shipyards in Germany, attacked bases in France, and patrolled the shallow Bay of Biscay during their transits. The Luftwaffe assembled air assets- at first, seaplanes to recon, then Condors, later providing fighter air cover while the subs and blockade runners were exposed on the surface. Occasionally, fighters from each side would meet; someone would lose.
KG 40 (and associated units) was stationed there during 1942 and -43. Contrary to their designation, they were not a bomber unit, but flew the heavy fighter version of the Ju 88, equipped with cannons in the nose. With experience, pilots could smash the RAF bombers flying patrol over the Bay and not be struck by their defensive fire. But few lasted that long.
It was dangerous; none of the combatants were heavily armored; they caught fire easily. If forced down, the planes often broke up on landing, leaving crews just moments to grab emergency gear and board life rafts. Fishermen rescued some, passing ships picked up others. Sometimes, the fight was near shore, and combatants crashed within reach of help. Otherwise, pictures merely show burning gas on the water....
Starved for replacements, the unit was decimated in opposing the D-day landings. The Allied fighters made short work of them. The book contains B&W pictures of numerous crews who paid with their lives, some without scoring a single victory.
Mr. Goss summarizes:
' With the benefit of hindsight, more than 50 years since the unit was disbanded, did V/KG 40, and latterly I and III/ZG 1, play a major part in both the Battle for the Atlantic and its associated air war? I now believe that the answer must be yes. Initially the Ju 88 C-6 was ideally suited in its role, inflicting a heavy toll on Allied aircraft. For example, in their two-year existence C-6s shot down 109 Allied planes, the majority of which were engaged in anti-submarine operations. Accordingly, the Allies had no alternative but to divert other aircraft to counter this 'Junkers Menace', particularly RAF night fighters, which could have been better employed shooting down German bombers attacking Britain. ' (p. 196)
Appendices include commanding officers, roll of members, victory claims and losses, plus Operational Instructions from the Commander of Atlantic forces.

A great reference...wish it had been published years ago!

I've always been a fan of GDAL and OGR. However, the online documentation is pretty sparse. I've used these utilities for pretty basic processing tasks and I've always known there was much more potential than I was realizing. This book provides a very thorough treatment of the entire suite of command line utilities. It includes detailed explanations of all the tools and their switches. The first part also includes examples of using each utility. A great desktop reference that I have been using regularly since I bought it.

The GDAL Toolkit is chuckful of ETL commandline tools for working with 100s of spatial (and not so spatial data sources). Sadly the GDAL website only provides the basic API command switches with very few examples to get a user going with. I was really excited when this book was announced and purchased as soon as it came out. This book makes a great reference manual for using GDAL/OGR suite of command line utilities.

Several chapters are devoted to each commandline tool, explaining what its for, the switches it has, and several examples of how to use each one. You'll learn how to work with both vector/(basic data no vector) data sources and how to convert from one vector format to another. You'll also learn how to work with raster data and how to transform from one raster data source to another as well as various operations you can perform on these.

This is a great book for any GIS pro to get their hands dirty and learn how to use spatial tools to do some amazing things. The benefit of using the tools covered in this book (GDAL/OGR) is that you could learn to integrate these tools into other workflows, such as downloading the latest raster data for your organization on weekly basis and running the necessary tools against it.

The first part of the book is filled with some great examples to get you familiar with using these tools and the rest of the book covers the documentation of these tools in detail. This should be on every GIS pros bookshelf.

One technique that I am particularly proud of in COVERT DREAMS is summed up by one of the many readers who have left reviews on my Amazon website: "One last point: at the end of most of the chapters the author used an unusual and effective technique that really won my respect. I felt I was in the hands of a master. Terrific book. I would recommend it to anyone." This particular review really had an effect on me since I had worked extremely hard to perfect this specific technique. Since COVERT DREAMS has two alternating stories that are linked in a horrifying way at the end, I wanted to keep the reader in suspense the entire journey. I especially wanted to ensure that this would be a page-turner. So what I did was to link each chapter together with endings that would titillate the reader, making one want to hurry on to see what was going to happen next.�

COVERT DREAMS is set primarily in Munich and in Saudi Arabia, both places that I know very well. The locales I have drawn are authentic. The research I did to ensure that the settings are all real came from my own personal observations. I was a student in Germany, and I have probably traveled to Munich on fifteen separate occasions. I know the city like I know my own hometown. In addition, I was a professor at a university in Saudi Arabia, and I traveled extensively throughout the country, which I also know quite intimately. So what I had to do was to somehow link these two extreme cultural entities, the Bavarian ebullient nature and the Arabian ultra religious culture. What I finally came up with, after lots of thought, hard work, and many rewrites was to add an intriguing link between Munich and Saudi Arabia at the end of most chapters.�

One of the two alternating stories mainly takes place in Munich, Germany, where a man who has been haunted recently by a series of lifelike nightmares is frantically trying to discover what is real, and who is who. The second story takes place in Saudi Arabia, where an American professor is frantically searching for his wife, whose very existence has disappeared. The first time I used this technique of linking the two alternating threads together to add suspense was at the end of the first chapter: "Time, gradually becoming their enemy, did a flip-flop, and the now became the then, dying, giving birth to what lay ahead, way beyond the present, biding its own good time, in total control, much like a German panzer unit moving across The Netherlands. Just like the power of Allah under the hot Saudi Arabian sun."�

One other example of my using this technique comes at the end of a later chapter: "Then it happened. They were both emotionally wrought, and the fear was evident in the way in which they clutched one another, neither of them wanting to ever let go, the table--their whole world, in fact--shaking, much like a beer barrel polka in a boisterous Munich beer garden--or a sandstorm in the lonely Saudi Arabian desert."

I am delighted that my readers have found this technique of mine effective because I can tell you that I spent a lot of time making sure that the wording in each chapter ending of COVERT DREAMS was as strong as it could be.

About the Author
Mike Meyer recently retired from a 40-year career as a professor of writing, amassing numerous teaching awards along the way from both his students and his colleagues. He lives in the Southern California wine country with his wife, Kitty, and their two other cats.�

Intriguing, Captivating, Fascinating, International Thriller

Michael Meyer's Covert Dreams is a winning combination, high octane, thrill ride not to be missed. B.J. is a married man living a normal life with his wife, has a normal job with an advertising agency, and normal friends and interests until the dreams start to invade and take over his life. The dreams start out as normal everyday dreams except they are about a woman and place he has never seen or visited. All too soon they pretty much take over and ruin his life as he knows it. Dabbie is the woman and Munich, Germany is the place of his dreams that have turned into his own personal nightmares. He tries everything to turn these nightmares off, tries all avenues in the medical profession only to receive no relief. Eventually he decides to travel to Munich to confront these dreams and takes more than the journey he has imagined. Parallel to his problems is another man, Stan, who is going through his own nightmares in Saudi Arabia.

Pick up your copy of Covert Dreams and take this undertaking with B.J., Dabbie, Stan and his wife Valerie. This story will not disappoint as it sucks you right into these lives from page one and doesn't let go until the last page is turned.

This is the first review I've written for Amazon. I'm a very picky reader (that's putting it mildly) and I tend to subscribe to the adage that if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. I'm not sure that's the best policy in life, but it's the one I tend to go with. This book, fortunately, has given me an opportunity to speak out. This is the best book, bar none, that I've read in an eon. It grabbed me by the collar and wouldn't let me go. I read it in three sittings. The voice, the pace, the settings, the highly intriguing plot: they all grabbed me. And the great thing was there was nothing grisly or disturbing. I don't like things like that. What I got was highly intelligent writing with a very compelling plot, and no violence. Bravo. One last point: at the end of most of the chapters the author used an unusual and effective technique that really won my respect. I felt I was in the hands of a master. Terrific book. I would recommend it to anyone.

International Thriller

In Greek Mythology, Cassandra was given the gift of prophecy, but the curse that nobody would ever believe her. In Covert Dreams, the characters must have felt much like Cassandra.

B.J. is having a vivid, recurring dream about Dabbie, a woman he has never met in Munich, a city where he's never been. Everyone assures him that it doesn't mean anything, but he knows and we know that it does. Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia, a man is going crazy looking for his wife who has disappeared. But all the records show that she never existed and everyone assumes that he is indeed crazy. A diplomat in an Athens hospital has some incriminating knowledge but because of his head trauma, again, no one believes him.

We know it all ties together with a brutal murder in Munich in 1984, but how? The complex plot twists and turns toward a conclusion I never saw coming. If you enjoy psychological thrillers and exotic locals, this is the book for you.

Good, but "Artist" is a good alternative

This is a great book with many of Tolkien's most wonderful pictures (those used in a series of LOTR calendars featuring his art), but rather than pay the usually very high price for it (it is long out of print), I would recommend "JRR Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator" (also found on amazon.com), which contains nearly all of the paintings, etc. from "Pictures by JRR Tolkien" in addition to a great many of Tolkien's pictures not included in "Pictures" (200 total, as opposed to "Pictures"'s 47). "Artist" is still in print, so is much more affordable. The only advantage of "Pictures is that it has many of the colored versions of Tolkien's pen-and-ink drawings (colored by H. E. Riddet) not included in "Artist". While the most obsessive Tolkien fans will want both "Pictures" and "Artist", most will be content without the far more expensive (and less inclusive) "Pictures."

Good volume but supplanted by "J. R. R. Tolkien: Author and Illustrator."

First published in 1979, PICTURES BY J. R. R. Tolkien has since been supplanted by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull's J. R. R. Tolkien: Author and Illustrator. The pictures were also published in the Tolkien calenders from 1973 to 1979, save for 1975. The Tolkien estate then authorized a revised version in 1992.

Almost all of the art from Pictures is available in J. R. R. Tolkien: Author and Illustrator and much more. The only material exclusive to this volume is Christopher Tolkien's notes and forward and a very select handful of artwork, so unless you want that or you are a Tolkien collector, I would advise to go with the Author and Illustrator volume.

The Hammand and Scull volume also better elaborate on the role of Tolkien's art in his life. Ultimately, Tolkien was an amateur artist, and I mean that in the best sort of sense. He did not paint professionally, nor was he paid for his artwork. He produced the paintings in his own time (just like his books). In many ways his work is the best about Middle-earth that is around or available. Although Tolkien frequently complained his could not draw, he produced some truly remarkable landscape work, especially the work in the 1998 ROVERANDOM. One of my personal favorites Bilbo floating down the river with the barrels that the Estate used for the 1970s publiation of THE HOBBIT. Tolkien produced some great work in his time and his art is definitely worth checking out, especially if you want to learn more about this fascinating author.

The diary of a single parent abroad

I read Jill Peningtons self published book in one sitting.Her story is real, and I can't remember when I last read such an honest account of life for someone struggling with so many issues that we might experience at some time in our own lives,
and with such a sense of humour and optimism.I found her story impressively informative given her financial difficulties were such a distraction.After having read so much about living abroad and all the learning experiences that are documented by writers I found this story encouraging,uplifting and at times truely hilarious

I began this book after supper one day expecting to read for a couple of hours and then put it down to go to sleep. Instead I welcomed the new day, with the lightening sky as I finished the last chapter. I did not expect to be captivated by this story but needless to say, I was.

I have read quite a few accounts of people living abroad and, in fact, that is how I spent the first 20 years of my own life. What I didn't expect is to become so involved with this writer and her children and the people who surround her in her adopted country, Italy.

Because this is a memoir I try to stay away from commenting on particular characters as they are real people, living and breathing humans (well some of them are). Let me just say that, in my opinion, this writer faced some amazing challenges with grace, humour and maybe a glass or two of wine.

I admire her ability to keep the health and welfare of her children at the forefront of each of her decisions. Hard to do when all the decisions and responsibilities fall onto a single set of shoulders. I admire her ability to find something to laugh about when other, more violent options, might feel preferable. In general, through some very trying times, our author raised 3 children from childhood to the cusp of their adult lives. We each make choices, that in hindsight we would change in the future, but that is never an option and we continue to make the best of each situation. It seems to me that this writer is very good at doing that.

I enjoyed learning about the renovation of two very different types of home. Being introduced to life in rural Italy, not one of the countries that I lived in though we did visit. Ms. Pennington's prose allowed me to absorb some of the native beauty of the country that she chose to call home. Her love of her new lifestyle, despite all the challenges, shows throughout the tale. I wish the book had continued but am glad that there is a forum to keep "in touch" this this brave and amazing woman.

Wonderful courageous lady, rotten husband.

I loved this true to life story by Jill Pennington. What a heroine. What a nasty low life husband! Putting up with all his antics before the divorce and certainly after the divorce was heroic in itself. I admire her strength in never beating up on him in front of her children and although she did cave in to his antics in pitting the children against their mother by buying them lots of things they didn't really need, but never seeing they were properly fed, housed or much of anything else certainly tells what a jerk he was. I love it that he is trying to stop the book from being published. Ha! I hope she makes a mint off the book and he doesn't see one red cent of it. He's in my opinion a real Schmuck and deserves all the rotten luck he can get! Good luck Jill. Hope you write a sequel. Would love to see how you are doing now.
