About the Author

Richard Mabey is a naturalist and award-winning author and journalist. He won wide acclaim on the publication of the original Food for Free in 1972 – which has never been out of print since – and again with the publication of the full-colour edition in 1989. Among his many other acclaimed publications are Gilbert White (Whitbread Biography of the Year) and the ground-breaking, award-winning best-seller Flora Britannica. He collaborated with Mark Cocker on Birds Britannica, and his book Nature Cure, described as 'a brilliant, candid and heartfelt memoir', was shortlisted for four prestigious prizes. He is an active member of national and local conservation groups and lives in Norfolk.

British Isles Specific!

I didn't realize, as it wasn't immediately apparent in the book summary that this is quite specific to the UK. I'd assumed that he was going to be covering temperate regions in general. This largely renders the book non-useful for anyone outside of Britain as the species covered appear fairly localized, even if they have close relatives in the US, the varieties are different enough to cause confusion if going upon the info in this book.

The biggest bummer is that I've got nobody I could give this book away to since it would cost as much to ship it to the UK as it would cost someone there to just buy it new.

No obviously this is partially my fault; I should've known that since it was a UK publisher it wouldn't be useful to me, but it would have been nice for Collins to describe it's region-specificity in the book description submitted to Amazon.

I don't have any experience in surviving outdoors. This is great. It has pictures and information that is easily understood. I highly recommend this book for any outdoor enthusiast. This book is compact and very easy to pack.

About the Author
Jenna Moore Fuller, a former vintage books dealer, has studied metaphysics for many years, with a special interest in synchronicity. She has written for websites and magazines, and kept longtime journals of her own meaningful coincidences along with those of family and friends.

After seeing the importance of words in coincidence, she focused on understanding its language. And discovered the different “styles” through which the Universe seems to speak to different people. The Secret Language of Synchronicity is an exploration of these types of guiding messages, along with the varying personal words that make them up.

Jenna currently is continuing her research into the phenomena (and collecting more stories!). She has learned that there’s always more to learn about how the big U communicates with us through words we “happen” upon.

--Not being especially aware of this specific idea -- "synchronicity" in general -- I truly enjoyed reading about the cause and effect of its existence. Having experienced life for 80 years, and saying many times, 'boy, that's a coincidence!!' and usually marking it up to being a 'good', strange, happening which was put to rest with a smile.
--I liked the stories which were graphic examples of how and when synchronicity was happening for the author and others.
--I would say that Fuller's three questions she asked in the introduction were all answered with a "yes". And the invitation to "join her on this quest" welcomed me in.
--Upon completing this fun, easy to read book, I was left with a better understanding of the meaningful coincidence theory of Synchronicity and would recommend it to my friends if they wanted a "good time" spent in reading and better education. I think Fuller's goals for the book were met.

When I became interested in the subject of synchronicity a few months ago, Jenna's book was one of the first I read. I found it easy to read and very informative. I like the way she uses her own experiences to illustrate the various ways that answers can come to us--from found slips of paper to giant billboards. The reader soon finds himself aware of signs that show us the way, signs that would have been ignored as not meaningful before reading "The Secret Language of Synchronicity." I highly recommend Jenna's book.

Use the online study guide

Worst "textbook" ever.
I wish zero stars was an option. This is the worst textbook I have ever used. I can only assume "teachers" choose it because it comes packaged with quizzes and tests and lectures so they don't have to do any work. The online study guide includes an outline that is far superior than each chapter for pulling out relevant information. There is nothing pulled out or emphasized as important in the chapters. If you are looking for a term enjoy reading the unpleasantly formatted text looking for it. Key information is nowhere to be found. I have never seen a textbook like this and it is a chore to use. Bought it for an online college class and the textbook was useless for open book quizzes and tests. The online study guide that is free to use was very helpful for the outline, but the other study tools like flashcards, etc were also terrible. Each chapter has one flashcard. Weak.
I am only writing this review to discourage other teachers from choosing garbage like this for their classes. Hopefully people will see this and not buy the book, but just use the online study guide.

I'm so glad I read this book!

Rarely do I read a book from start to finish without putting it down. This is one of those books. Very well written and wholly engaging, it took me on a surreal and yet easily understandable journey though the mind and experiences of someone marginalized by society as insane. That he is able to describe with such incredible attention to detail his delusions and how he was made to suffer so much cruelty and injustice at the hands of those we trust with our lives, including medical doctors, peace officers, guards, emergency medical technicians, nurses, psychiatrists, lawyers and even a judge, is amazing. What a great book!

It is sad how so much of our society is prejudiced against the mentally ill, regarding them as unthinking and unfeeling, and therefore undeserving of any compassion. The author does a great service to us all by correcting this misunderstanding. With this book, he has not only prepared me for what may be my experience should something similar happen to me, he has also taught me how to show more patience and love towards those who suffer as he did. His book has the power to make the world a better place. It should be required reading for all those who are preparing themselves for any type of work involving the mentally ill.

By the time readers finish this book, they will understand themselves better and learn to get more out of life, regardless of where they fall on the scale of fully sane (is anyone fully sane?) to insane. If they have friends or family members who are mentally ill, they will love them more and have more joy in their relationships with them. If they work with the mentally ill, their work will take on a whole new meaning; it will be more fulfilling and more satisfying.

The author’s summary towards the end of the lessons he has learned through all of his experiences described in this book are beautiful and inspiring. His conclusions resonate as true with me and have given me a brighter hope for the future of humanity.

I met Ken and his wife recently when he purchased my used van. He seemed like a normal very intelligent guy. When he told me his story, I could not connect the man with what he was telling me. Having had a tonsillectomy gone bad myself from which I almost died at the age of 30, and subsequent health problems for which I have seen 34 different health care professionals just since 2007 with little positive results, I had to read this book. For someone who had never authored a book, Ken's story is very well told, and a real eye-opener to the practice ( an appropriate word) of modern medicine. Pharmaceutical companies push their products in numerous ways to providers and patients with more regard for their bottom line than the patients welfare. The FDA is staffed by former and future pharmaceutical employees, so the fix is in with respect to new drugs until horror stories like Ken's become common. As one author of a book I read says, " How many parts do you have to remove to make a healthy person?" I believe the same could be said for the use of prescription drugs in this country. This book is a clear wakeup call as to what can happen when any patient is subjected to botched surgery, ingested with numerous drugs, and run through a mental health system that cares little for his/her welfare. As Ken himself told me, without his wife, Beth, acting as his advocate, he likely would not be here to tell it.

Layman's view of manic

I work as a psychiatric nurse for children ages 5-12. I hate to admit it but we as professionals become immune to the individual's needs and often assume that the behaviors of our patients can all fit in a box. We are told this is their behavior and we think we know the answers to what they need to do to fix themselves. Thank you Ken for reminding me that circumstances can trigger how our mind is going to try to protect us. I feel God has led me through various situations in my life to provide me with empathy. It has helped me treat each child in my care as a special individual. Reading your book reinforces my desire to look beyond the presentation and see each child as God sees them. Not the broken person that stands in front of me but the potential each of us has inside to be whole and healthy with the right care. Very insightful read.
