Dr. Vawter shines in this one!

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm not only a friend of John Vawter's, but a fan of his writing. His Christian based novels pick you up by the heels, turn you upside down, and twirl you around until you "get it." This man is not only filled with the spirit, but good ole common sense which seems to be a rarity. This book, however, took me by surprise. It isn't the humor that surprised me, because Lord knew that he made me laugh with every sermon he delivered. It was the surprise element of the amount of research he pulled together and wrapped into one fun filled excerpt of golf experiences. I didn't even know what ball hawking was until now. Did it have something to do with the Hawkeye state? Or maybe Hawks that swoop down and carry balls away? What amazes me about Dr.Vawter is his ability to dig deep into his soul, and then explain the meaning of life for those who search the truth, while weaving humor into just about everything. Bravo, Dr. John Vawter. I recommend this not only to golfers, but those who enjoy reading a fun, uplifting book that will make you chuckle more than a few times.

Reading this with an English perspective didn't dampen the humour at all, despite all the obviously US references. My first reaction was to quote John MacEnroe - "You can't be serious", before I realized that he wasn't!! I really enjoyed reading it as there were chuckles all the way through and some really funny stories. I honestly had moments though when I thought that he really did do all the mad things he listed to retrieve golf balls, before getting a sanity check and saying "No" - it's another joke! I don't think this book would help golfers to play golf though. Immediately after reading it my next round took twice as long as I avidly searched for balls under every hedge and in every bit of water. I wouldn't qualify as a Hawker though - I was an abject failure: I didn't find a single ball. Refreshingly funny book I'd recommend to anyone.

The Goofy Side of Golf

Sometimes what this this weary world really needs a great goofy book just for the heck of it. In the world of golf, this is one of the best in that laughter-inducing category. Every golfer of every skill level knows the daunting challenge of trying to save precious strokes by trying to find miss-hit balls. They can mysteriously vanish where there is seemingly no place to hide. They can be swallowed whole by the most slightly overgrown grass. They can lurk unseen under the first leaf to fall at the approach of autumn. In a pond they can lie maddeningly one inch out of range of the longest reach to retrieve them. This little book deals with hundreds of such situations and offers hundreds of hilarious solutions to get them back in play Every page is guaranteed to make a golfer smile. Five stars.
