Simple and Effective

This book is pretty strait forward. The methods are simple. I have found that most books only have a couple of golden nuggets anyhow so this book certainly delivers. It's $13 price tag for kindle does seem a little high, I assume the author actually wanted to make money. Don't expect volumes of knowledge to get lost in. Its simple. You can't possibly misunderstand or get lost, and that is why it works.

The general outline:
Do Squats 3 times a week.
Take your normal weight for 10 rep sets and do 20.
Add five pounds every time you do squats.
Breath while doing squats and take a few breaths between each on the last few.
Drink a half of gallon of milk a day-- throughout the day.
No fancy program will replace consistency paired with ball busting effort. End of Story.
20 rep single set squats have a better track record than other methods.
This info may seem to come at a high price tag. But if it works, it works.

About the Author

Richard Kautz is an engineer and physicist who holds a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During his career at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, he helped develop fundamental quantum standards for both voltage and capacitance. Kautz is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a recipient of the Samuel Stratton Award for measurement science and the Edward Condon Award for scientific writing.

The paradox of chaos

"Chaos" records my personal quest to understand the paradox of motion that is predictable and random at the same time. Of course, "random" is usually taken to mean both "unpredictable" and "jumbled", but the paradox remains when we restrict "random" to mean simply "jumbled". How can motion predicted by a simple equation, lacking any random element, be truly jumbled -- all mixed up according to statistical tests? That is the puzzle at the heart of my book.

In resolving this puzzle, "Chaos" avoids advanced mathematics (calculus) and relies instead on algebra plus graphics and animation (available on a companion CD) to explore both the phenomenon of chaos and its root cause. If your interest is casual, the introductory chapter probably explains everything you ever wanted to know about chaos. But if you want to glimpse chaos theory's heart of darkness, you'll need persistence and a willingness to absorb new mathematical concepts, including exponentials and logarithms, probability, correlation, frequency analysis, fractals, and transfinite numbers. Each of these concepts is introduced as painlessly as possible with examples and analogies intended to provide an intuitive understanding. In the end, you'll get to know the mathematical monster at the heart of chaos, the topological tangle discovered late in the 19th century by the French physicist and mathematician, Henri Poincar�. Of his tangle, Poincar� wrote, "One is struck by the complexity of this picture, which I do not even attempt to draw."

But resolving the paradox of chaos is just part of the story. "Chaos" begins by introducing the science of dynamics, as founded by Galileo and Newton in the 16th and 17th centuries to explain the regular motion of pendulums and planets, motion that epitomizes the predictability of a clockwork universe. Strangely, however, the phenomenon of chaos also falls within the realm of Newton's equations. Although Newton never suspected as much, his equations can give rise to jumbled motion just as easily as periodic motion. But a condition known as "nonlinearity" is required for chaos. In the book, you'll learn about nonlinearity through a series of examples drawn from the motion of a pendulum. Newton himself butted heads with nonlinearity when he tried to understand the details of the moon's orbit and later admitted that it made his head ache.

Using Newtonian dynamics, my book explores the chaotic motion of a pendulum to reveal exactly how jumbled it can be. When a pendulum is driven by a periodic force of sufficient strength, its motion doesn't necessarily settle into the regular swing of a grandfather clock. Instead, its rotation can be completely jumbled, without any apparent correlation between how it's rotating now and how it was rotating some time ago. Indeed, tracking the pendulum's net rotation reveals a drunkard's walk, with forward motion accumulated with the same probability as reverse motion. And, if we pretend the pendulum's velocity waveform is an audio signal, chaos sounds like white noise: the hiss of a radio tuned between stations. These are surprising observations given that the pendulum's motion is predicted by a simple equation, lacking any hint of randomness.

A further property of chaotic motion is colorfully described as the "butterfly effect". This effect was discovered by Edward Lorenz, the meteorologist who first realized that weather can be chaotic. In 1959, while exploring a simple mathematical model that predicted nonperiodic weather patterns, Lorenz discovered that a tiny disturbance can quickly lead to a pattern completely different from what would have occurred without the disturbance. This observation led Lorenz to ask, "Does the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?" My book explores this sensitivity of chaotic systems to small disturbances in a variety of scenarios, from convecting fluids to whirling carnival rides to colliding billiard balls. In each case, the butterfly effect profoundly limits our practical ability to predict the future, even when exact prediction is possible in principle.

In addition to presenting the phenomenon of chaos and its ultimate mathematical roots, Chaos traces its historical development from Galileo and Newton, who began the science of dynamics, to Poincar�, Hadamard, and Birkoff, who developed the underlying mathematics of chaos, to Lorenz, Smale, and others, who initiated the coming of age of chaos. Biographical sketches of the founding fathers of chaos theory enliven the narrative and explain the historical context of their work.

Although "Chaos" is perhaps best suited to college undergraduates, it is also intended to be accessible to high-school students. With this in mind, I am pleased to report that the British Physics Olympiad presented "Chaos" as a prize to outstanding participants in its 2012 high-school competition. This is an excellent book. The author systematically introduces the major concepts using simple models (particularly pendulum) and iterations of algebraic equations, visualizations based on these and amplified by interactive media on an accompanying CD. Systems of increasing complexity: 1D, 2D, 3D were pursued. Each step is built on from previous ones and there is useful repetition of previous ideas. This exploration is put into a wonderful historical context . I found these historical vignettes one of the most enjoyable parts of the book and they blended well with the exposition. The evolution of the subject (the motivations, starts and stops) was partitioned naturally within the progressive exposition in the text.

I read this shortly after reading An Introduction To Chaotic Dynamical Systems by Robert L. Devaney. The central concepts of the characteristics of chaos: sensitivity to initial conditions; topological transitivity and dense set of periodic orbits were explored and explained in a clear and deep (yet deceptively simple manner). I developed deeper insights into concepts I found difficult: including homoclinic points,, homoclinic trajectories, heteroclinic trajectories. The use of Liapunov exponent was very helpful.

Finally, the culmination of potential applications and range of disciplines: Conway's game of life, Wolfram classification of cellular automata, control systems, biomedical science, forecasting was a great way to pull together all the ideas.

I FEEL I AM THERE ALL OVER AGAIN!!!

As one of the guest stars on the original Star Trek series, (I was the Goddess in “Who Mourns for Adonais”) I’ve been thrilled and amazed reading this brilliant, detailed reconstruction of the creation of this ground-breaking series!

I feel I am there all over again ― on the Desilu lot with the visionary Gene Roddenberry and his associates ― and the great stars of TOS, who became dear friends.

Marc Cushman’s research, which I know took six years of intensive work, takes us behind-the-scenes to see what went into this series ― information than even those of us who were there never imagined!

This is the book that everyone who loves Star Trek, with its awesome insights into the future ― inventions which are present in our lives today! ― will love!!! It sweeps us up in the massive effort it took to create this unique series so filled with vision, hope, brilliance ― and longevity!

Marc Cushman deserves credit and thanks from all who read this spectacular and authoritative work!!!

WOW! Best Trek Book - EVER!

Have you ever wished you were 'a fly on the wall' during the creation and making of the original Star Trek? Well, consider author Marc Cushman your genie and his book your wish granted.

There have been tombs of material written on the subject of Trek. From 'The Making of.. to 'The Real Story,' but NONE have captured the 'lightning in the bottle' like 'These Are The Voyages.' Every one of The original seven have put pen to paper and added their voice to the legend that is Trek, but they are coming from an actor's point of view. Those books are great reads, but they fail in comparison to what, I feel, is this 'tour de force' by author Marc Cushman. Not only does his book take you deeper than any other book but, as you read this page-turner, you'll feel like you're right there as the decisions are being made.

I was blown away by the huge amount of newly released information that you can only find in this book. New interviews with people in front of and behind the camera, memos, ratings and detailed drill downs on each and every episode of season one.

This book is a Trekkie's/Trekker's dream!

Finally, one of the most iconic shows in TV history has the first chapter in what will become an iconic trilogy of books.

All I can say is -- start making room on your bookshelf because two more volumes are on the way!

The Real Story of Star Trek

I've known of some of Gene Roddenberry's credits, but not in the detail the author supplies on almost any fact known about the man. The first chapter alone is exceedingly interesting. I really enjoyed reading about his relationship with Erle Stanley Gardner for example. This book has captured the overall feel of the business, with the development of the networks, the working of television at the time and how Roddenberry found his place in it. Mr. Cushman's opening chapter on the man is revealing and extensive. The opening chapter is one where the curious can get up to speed on the man's life and how it started in an entertaining manner. The personal comments from the actors and those involved are priceless.

The book is quite revealing; I can't believe I'll get to read two more books on each season. Frankly, I'm not surprised that this book is good, but it's just so darn readable that I'm actually finding a new found love for the material. I have all of the books pertaining to the original show and I've found this one provides information I never knew about the series.

You get to read the memos from Gene Roddenberry, Bob Justman, et. all and there are new quotes from actors and writers who were there. It really does take you back to the time when it was all coming together and the amount of creativity involved in the undertaking.

Did you know Gene Roddenberry held studio screenings of episodes to potential writers for the show? Do you know why the Vulcan mind meld was created? The level of detail is impressive. I'd doubt that any other television show could be documented as this one has been here.

The interplay between the people who came together to create this unique and special series is great reading. Any student of television should read this book. Every episode has 20 pages of interesting tales that were never told. Comments from the studio mailbag are included after each episode chapter. Even the Neilson ratings are included. That's a first anywhere. Star Trek a failed show because of the ratings? The facts will surprise on just how well watched the original Star Trek was during its original broadcast run.

I'm feeling lucky to have this book. It's the first book since those from the 90's by the various people associated with the show, that has anything approaching new information that I'd want to know. And this book is physically a large book. I thank Jacobs/Brown for that, too.

I'm so happy this undertaking is not just by a professional who's in the business, but from a fan of Star Trek. A truly special volume for fans of the show.

Shortly after the US Navy put the F-4H-1 Phantom II into service in 1960, the US Air Force in turn took an interest in it. After a successful comparison with the best machines of the period, it was decided at the beginning of 1962 to use it as the standard tactical fighter. It was in May 1963 that the first USAF F-4C, overall similar to the Navy version, made its first flight and exceeded Mach 2. Several versions and variants of the twin-engine fighter were produced over almost ten years, taking advantage each time of the progress made in avionics, power plants and armament, with the original “all-missile” concept being eventually put aside in the light of the fighting in South-East Asia in which the aircraft took an active part, in exchange for an on-board weapon which turned out to be very effective both in the aerial combat and ground attack roles.

Apart from the USAF and the various units of the Air National Guard, or the United States Reserve which used the 2 600 F-4s up to the middle of the 90s - especially for recce or electronic warfare - the Phantom IIs were also very successful in the export markets since more than 1,200 examples were flown by ten or so countries, especially NATO ones. Some, like Japan, even built them under license in large numbers and many, like Israel and Iran, often used them successfully in combat.

Technical graphics and overall art quality is topnotch. Historical and contemporary references to time, location and unit ID appears to be as accurate as any I've seen in similar pubs. A TOP QUALITY VOLUME -- ESPECIALLY AT AMAZON'S PRICE.

Now, if only you could obtain and sell copies of "VOL. 1: US NAVY AND USMC VERSIONS" (and/or if only the publisher would print and distribute of few thousand [even a few hundred!?] more of the same) I'll jump at the chance to purchase this book -- ESPECIALLY this book -- assuming your price wouldn't be too outlandishly high.

It reads like a family scrapbook

They were born, they grew up. Their father made some nice deals on exercise equipment. They started to exercise in eighth grade, as a family tradition -- they played sports and then football, they got hurt. They had fun.

Although there are some interesting tidbits scattered throughout this book -- and I wish my mother had put a freezer full of food stocked for me and Sis when we were in the middle of our baseball practice/growth spurt years -- I found the book to be pleasantly anecdotal, but not inspirational. It's nice to know "how they did it" but it doesn't give much of a message other than -- this is a nice, solid family -- this is how they lived, grew up, played sports.

I bought this for my nephews birthday and he loved it. But it is definitely a book for children and not adults. I read a quote attributed to Wes Welker where he joked that he though it was written in crayon but it does seem like a rush job with not much time or effort put into it.

More of a Children's Book

I received this book from the Vine program and more than likely I would never have purchased the book. It seems more targeted fro children to read. The print though is large, the wording not that difficult and a fast and easy book to read in a short time. This is somewhat the "all American" story of a family that loved sports, that worked hard and overcame setbacks as they worked toward their goals. The book will give you a picture of how the family was raining the boys, how the family got by of a few hundred dollars a week for food when everyone was at home.

This is just a nice little personal book that gives the reader the "rest of the story" and is light and of little real substance. It is just a little fun reading away from those books that contains lot of drama and intrigue,. You won't find that in this book.. This book is not a breaking story worthy of a news clip, but rather a lazy , short, little story about one's family , their trials and tribulations. Read it only if you have nothing else to do for the moment.

Till, who has directed operas at the Glyndebourne Festival, approaches the interpretive difficulties involved in staging Mozart's operas by analyzing the works in relation to the social, political, moral, philosophical and religious climate of the late 18th century. In the early opera, La Finta Giardiniera , Till finds an expression of the moral sentiments of the bourgeois Enlightenment and the influence of Rousseau; Le Nozze di Figaro illustrates the importance of contractual relationships in bourgeois society; the character of Don Giovanni represents a destructive force threatening the codes of conduct that separated the Enlightenment from the supposed age of chaos that preceded it. Till draws on the authority of an impressive array of writers and thinkers to develop his ideas, but his excessive erudition and convoluted writing style obfuscates rather than resolves the problems he addresses. He also ignores the music, the component of opera that is fundamental to discussion of the drama. Illustrated.

One might have hoped there would be a moratorium on books about Mozart after the excesses of his recent bicentennial, but this reviewer would gladly make an exception for this one. This critical study grew from practical necessity: the author, who has directed operas at the Glyndebourne Festival, encountered seeming contradictions in staging Mozart and felt that their resolution lay in learning more about the age that gave rise to them. The result of his investigations brims with fascinating and original insights into aspects of Mozart's life as well as his operas. A few examples: Till sheds new and favorable light on two of Mozart's adversaries, his father and the despised Archbishop Colloredo. He links Mozart's Catholicism and his involvement with the Freemasons. He reassesses Mozart's own marriage in light of the world view implicit in Le Nozze di Figaro. He juxtaposes Cosi fan tutte with Die Zauberflote. Highly recommended for large music collections.

An erudite mix of music, history, philosophy, biography, sociology, and even depth psychology--adding up to a triumphant study of Mozart's supreme masterworks. Writers faced with Don Giovanni or The Magic Flute have generally retreated into plot summary or musical analysis. Not so here. Stage-director Till, needing to find practical theatrical solutions to the paradoxes of Mozart's operas--why are those peasants loose in Count Almaviva's palace?--turns for help to Mozart's own intellectual milieu, the ``German enlightenment.'' He weaves the chronology of Mozart's professional progress into a tapestry of 18th-century ideas: the social contract; the ``enlightened despot''; the pursuit of happiness; the moral worth of sentiment; the status of the individual. In a text dense with apt quotation from Diderot, Rousseau, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Goethe, and others, Mozart's personal and artistic ambitions are seen playing themselves out against the larger tension of a society striving to reconcile the freedom necessary for bourgeois prosperity with the authority thought necessary to hold that society together. In his early travels, Mozart fed on Enlightenment ideals (e.g., the artist as honored public figure rather than private lackey). He went to Vienna upon the accession of Germany's most enlightened prince, Joseph II, and in the next five ``years of optimism'' produced a host of mature masterpieces. Each opera from La finta giardiniera onward receives full discussion of its connection to contemporaneous social thought, and there is a particularly compelling treatment of the final operas within the context of the ``collapse'' of Joseph's reform program. Mozart's Masonic associations also receive an illuminating presentation. Not all of Till's propositions can be accepted without question, and his occasional forays into psychobiography prove the weakest link, but no matter: Few books provide such a satisfying exploration of the thoughts and feelings from which great art is born. Brings it all together

The Enlightenment, Freemasonry, Josephinian reforms, and Mozart converged upon Vienna in the 1780s to produce perhaps the most intensely creative epoch in the history of the human race. Till takes you there and serves it all up as has no other author I have read. The wealth of information here is too great to be absorbed in one reading, but just as one continues to enjoy Mozart's music with successive exposures, so may one expect re-reading of Till to be informative and pleasurable.

This study by Till really makes a Mozart lover re-think some of the ideas or preconceptions he had about the opera's.

The author doesn't approach the opera's as a musicologist might do (no musical analysis or musical examples) , but analyses the literary and philosophical contents of each work very carefully. It offers a lot of background and really tries to capture the essence of each piece separately.

Really strong is the part about Don Giovanni, where Till argues that the introduction of the divine is not simply a remnant of the old Moli�re-play, but is in fact one of the central elements of Enlightened thought. It shows convincingly that Mozart nor his audiences had any sympathy for Don Giovanni (unlike most people today) and that he is not at all a free-thinking liberal who willingly says no to God. This goes to the heart of the opera and reveals to us that even today, this opera is poorly interpreted by directors and scholars alike.

The most disappointing part of the book is perhaps the chapter on Die Zauberfl�te. This is the only opera which Till has trouble explaining some of the oddities involving Enlightened thinking in connection with this opera. He doesn't develop the Masonic context as well as one should expect and that's a pity, since Mozart's central message of universal respect regarding other peoples religion, thoughts and lifestyle is so tremendously important, especially today!

However, Till does a good job putting Mozart's work in there proper philosophical and cultural context and really makes his reader consider aspects that never before occurred to him.

The book is really well written, has excellent structure and is thought provoking. For this price, you cannot miss!
