Refreshing

I just recently purchased this book and i really enjoy it. It's about time this somewhat obscure defence received more attention. Move order is 1.c4 b6, 2.d4 e6 with Black's 3rd move usually Bb7. The only drawback is if White opens 1.d4 King says it's very important to answer with e6. This of course gives White the option of 2.e4 which leads to the French defence. So you will have to brush up on the French a bit if you expect to employ this opening since 1.d4 seems more popular than 1.c4
Contrary to King's axiom that 1.d4 players would rather use 2.c4 than 2.e4, i have not found this to be the case. The book is very well written though and perhaps adding the French back into my repertoire was a good idea anyway. You won't be disappointed.

Sound Analysis, Clearly Explained, Immediately Useful

Grandmaster King follows the standard Cadogan Publisher's format very effectively: clear explanation of thematic ideas, key moves identified and model games employed to illustrate these ideas and moves. Each chapter is neatly summarized, games are annotated, and I think very useful to most intermediate players and ambitious beginners. I think that the coverage is comprehensive (when I compare it to MC0-14) for an opening generally regarded as solid and positional rather than dependent on specific move orders.

learn to play the English Defence as the English play it!?

Every so often it is nice to come across a gem of opening discussions in chess literature. Dan King provides witty and sensical advice on the current trends involved in the english defence, which is so rightly named (english defence) by the many experts who have used and developed this opening. (Miles, Speelman, Short, and King himself to name a few; but others like Kengis from latvia have contributed) I wanted to study something different and a little unusual from modern trends in chess and I first discovered this opening used in a korchnoi game where the english players were referenced in Kasparov's predecessor books. So having this in mind to see something a little different I was happy to see that this book is rich with theory. Dan King leads you through the many aspects of the opening by the use of games, half of which end in draws but thats beside the point. The important thing is you see what does matter in pawn structure, queenside pawn majority, attacking the center through the use of pinning or even removing its defenders( Bb4 pin or knight takes bishop at d3), opening lines for your b7 bishop, a thematic f5 if the position calls for it, how to avoid f4 by white when the knight is placed typically on g6, and other themes that are discussed as you traverse this field of discovery. The other thing I really like about this book is at the end of each chapter there is a summary going over the ideas in the game, also an opening tree of the different variations played with references. If anything else you will gain a better understanding of hypermodern concepts and the book is entertaining. I recommend it for something different to add to your repertoire to throw your opponent off if you want to avoid typical english setups, or even common d4 openings; and maybe in the process have a better unerstanding of fianchettos.
