About the Author
At the beginning of the First World War, Joseph Pilates was imprisoned in England along with many Germans who happened to be living at the time in and around Lancaster, England. He was a German national who had been boxing and performing in England prior to 1914. While living in the Camp, he taught other residents the series of exercises that he had developed for personal use over the preceding decades both in Germany and in England. His own exercise sets drew strongly from his studies of yoga and Zen, as well as ancient Roman and Greek exercise regimens.

read this before taking Pilates classes

Like many other brilliant philosophies, minor changes through generations of Pilates instructors have cumulatively changed the exercise routine developed by Joseph Pilates to the extent that the creator himself might be appalled by what is passing for his work in many studios. This book brings the work to the student as Joesph Pilates intended them for the average person. While I would not take issue with someone who has practiced the routine as very precisely taught by Pilates himself, the now common practice of using the exercises as an aerobic workout, or teaching people with a diminished sense of physical self the exercises as practiced by dancers does a great disservice to their potential health and well-being. Pilates is teaching the philosophy, psychology, and physiology of health step by deliberate step. If you want to feel your best, read the words of the prophet himself before engaging a teacher 12 generations away from the master. You might get lucky with your choice, but knowing what Pilates was trying to teach will go a long way to inform your practice.

Excellent resource

The book is short, succinct, and effective. Mr. Pilates put together an effective resource in this book which describes his philosophy towards fitness connected with a persons liveliness and health, and explains how this program invigorates the user. I will rather master these exercises before continuing towards what pilates has become today. I am a fit person who often does kettle bells, yoga, occasional barbell weights, and more, and I found myself cringing a few times with seemingly simple movements from this book. Tread carefully! Yet an excellent resource.

Best version out there (unless you have the bucks for an original)

If you practice or teach Pilates this is a MUST. Some of what is taught as Pilates these days is far from it. Get back to the source, the man himself; his words, him modeling the exercises. This version of Return To Life, done by the Pilates Method Alliance, is gorgeous. It features clearer remastered photographs, it's nicely laid out and I even prefer the modern, simple font. I have two other versions of this book and bought this as a gift for someone. But it's too beautiful. I'm keeping this copy and ordering another to give away.

What Is Remembered Lives

Sadly, I bought this book upon receiving the news that a friend's teenage daughter had been diagnosed with an incurable fatal illness. As one who came to Paganism by my own choice, I had no reference yet for how Pagans dealt with end of life passage.

It turns out it was that very reason that Starhawk and other members of Reclaiming wrote this book. Very few modern Pagans are raised in their chosen spirituality and often find they have no traditions or practices to guide them when dealing with the loss of a loved one.

This book is not a strict step-by-step ritual guide, but a sharing of experience that includes blessings, prayers and ritual details. The collected writings share how various people have dealt with the situations around long illness as well as sudden losses. I can't say enough good about this book. Thank the goddess there is a book from a Pagan perspective. That celebrates the diversity of pagan belief and addresses loss and death. From how to help children deal with the loss of a loved one (bird or teacher or...) to how to conduct a home-made cremation to mourning rituals and healing songs to advice for being with a loved one who is dying. My only complaint is that it isn't long enough. Deep enough. Hopefully it is only the first volume of future books...

Chase's Super Sniffer is a winner with both my 4 year old and me! First and foremost, the stickers have strong scents. What I really love about this book is that the scents are diverse. Here are the scents in order: generic flowers, apples, cherries, grass, bubble bath, salty sea, old tires, pine trees, bananas, and finally...liver treats (my son says, "Yum!"). The story is fun, too. I highly recommend this book!

About the Author
Stephen Castles, DPhil, is Research Professor of Sociology at the University of Sydney. He was previously Director of the International Migration Institute at the University of Oxford. His books and articles have been translated into many languages and have been highly influential in the development of international migration studies.

Hein de Haas, PhD, is Co-Director of the International Migration Institute, University Lecturer in Migration Studies, and James Martin Fellow at the University of Oxford. He is also Professor of Migration and Development at Maastricht University.

Mark J. Miller, PhD, is the Emma Smith Morris Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware. He served on the editorial board of the International Migration Review from 1982 to 2013. Dr. Miller is the author or coauthor of six books and over 100 articles, book chapters, monographs and reviews, including several in French and German. He conducts research and consults widely on comparative immigration and refugee policies, global migration, and migration and security. He is a recipient of the Francis X. Alison award, the highest honor extended to faculty by the University of Delaware.

Castles' 5th edition is a winner

Once again, in the 5th edition, Stephen Castles and his co-authors give a brilliant, global overview of patterns of migration and their underlying causes. This is both an excellent text for undergraduate or graduate students and a handy reference for scholars in the field. Written in a clear and well-organized manner, this book not only describes the causes and impacts of migration today but also places contemporary trends in their historical context.
