About the Author

Melinda Thielbar is a teacher, statistician, and economist who has written mathematics courses at many different levels. A valuable resource to students, educators, and parents

"The Secret Ghost: A Mystery with Distance and Measurement" is the third book in an outstanding Manga Math Mystery series and involves a "haunted" house where Sam and Michelle have moved to live with their dad. They receive help from Kung Fu friends Amy and Tom who help them use measuring tools to calculate distance, volume, and areas to enable them to solve the mystery of Michelle's secret ghost. Colorful Manga illustrations tell the story and keep interest high. Aside from teaching basic measuring and logical problem solving skills, "The Secret Ghost" contains some positive subtext suggestions, such as that children of different ethnicities can be closely related as well as good friends, and former bullies can become friends and heroes, and finally, children who are not ridiculed for having fears can be empowered to investigate and resolve their fears. "The Secret Ghost" will appeal to elementary and middle school age children, and will be a valuable resource to students, educators, and parents.

Grammatical Errors

This book is very informative, however, the reason why I gave it a 3 star is because of quite a few grammatical errors. For instance spelled COMPLEMENTARY correct on some pages and in the glossary, but on other pages in the chapter review they spell it COMPLIMENTARY. Also, some words in the glossary are not in alphabetical order. Some of the answers/definitions in the workbook do not match the information given to us in the textbook. However, all in all very informative.

The title indicates that this is about the 7d, but there are a few sections only of very good information about settings. The rest is mainly information about Photoshop techniques. Those parts are also good, but I bought the book so I could read about the 7d, and was disappointed to find so little about it here.

Ethan Sawyer is the College Essay Guy. That kind of says it all. While he may have named himself that, he has earned the title. His passion for writing essays that is conveyed in this book, will help any student get through the somewhat stressful and daunting process with fun and ease. As a college counselor, I have used some of Ethan’s methods to help my own clients write their essays. The great thing about this book is that it brings the College Essay Guy and his methods, brainstorming exercises, structures and ideas to everyone. Ethan is inspirational and College Essay Essentials is a must have for any student (or counselor) who is looking to be inspired to write a successful college admissions essay.

It’s a compelling read as he engages the reader with his wit, humility and humor. It is easy to learn from his examples and his perfect mix of show and tell that is the hallmark of any great essay. He offers some great exercises and tools for college advisers to help their clients or writers to get started or unstuck in their process of writing personal essays. It really is a very valuable resource for anyone working on a college admissions essay.

Great book and professor, maybe don't try this at home alone!

Echoing another reviewer this is a great book and M Hill is a great teacher. Couple of minor glitches however - some of the software should be obtained from the web not the CD as there were production problems with (some of?) the CDs - this is not a problem as most of the software has free albeit limited educational software licenses. I would be cautious about trying this stuff at home alone as a beginner however - some minor errors in spreadsheet construction can lead you badly astray. Human instructors are still value added and here especially so! However I cannot imagine a better book to use under any circumstance for someone wanting to learn about this material. Optimization is the closest thing you will ever find to getting a free lunch and this is a first class introduction

Excellent book for Quantitative Analysis

This book was used for an MBA course in quantitative analysis. The book touches on some theory but is used for applying QA using Excel. The Excel templates make short work of the complex calculations in QA so it allows the reader to do proper analysis of the data. If you want to learn about how to do decision analysis and time-series forecasting, then this is a great book to use. The CD comes with all the supplemental Excel spreadsheets and other coursework that is not covered in the book.
