The Last Dive

This book was quite riveting. I couldn't put it down. I went to High School with the Father in this story. I never went scuba diving and didn't know much about it. I certainly learned a lot!! I organized our 40th High School reunion for his class and mine. We put this book on display so classmates could read this unbelievable story of one of our own.

Lives of the Laureates grows out of a continuing lecture series at Trinity University in San Antonio, which invites Nobelists from American universities to describe their evolution as economists in personal as well as technical terms. Each laureate achieves the goal of clarity without sacrificing inherently difficult content: Kenneth Arrow makes grasping the essentials of his "impossibility theorem" painless; Lawrence Klein clearly presents what goes into econometric "model building"; George Stigler masterfully describes his "information theory"; and so on. These lectures demonstrate the richness and diversity of contemporary economic thought. The reader will find that paths cross in unexpected ways -- that disparate thinkers were often influenced by the same teachers--and that luck as well as hard work plays a role in the process of scientific discovery.

The first edition of Lives of the Laureates had a spare quality: like an empty stage lit by a single light bulb. The fifth edition is more like a lush picnic. All kinds of people are here, having a good time. They are somewhat unbuttoned, talking about their lives' stories as they might to a friend. They have in common their vigor, their ultimate success, and their love of economics. But mostly they are various, a regular gallery of types. Scientific autobiography has come late to economics, but William Breit, Barry Hirsch, and Trinity University have shown how instructive and downright entertaining it can be.

I bought both this book and a Chiltons repair manual. To me the Chiltons was a better resource to use. Better pictures and well written process.

TOUR DE FORCE

Eric Weber's first book is a TOUR DE FORCE, in terms of its contribution to existing scholarship on John Dewey and John Rawls. In it, he expertly draws upon Dewey's constructivism in order to critically assess Rawls's Kantian constructivism. Having worked on Rawlsian political philosophy for several years, and as a Dewey scholar myself, I worried that the book would be a mere rehashing of previous scholarly views on the two thinkers' ideas. It is not.

The author offers insightful readings of works by Dewey, Rawls, Peirce, Locke, Hegel and several meta-ethicists. He evaluates the epistemological assumptions behind Rawls's theories of justice and political liberalism in ways that I've never seen before. I learned something new in each chapter. Indeed, I plan to assign the chapter on social contract theories to students in my introduction to social-political philosophy course next term. Since it is so clearly written, the book would make an excellent teaching tool.

I strongly believe that Eric Weber's book proves Robert Talisse wrong. In Talisse's recent paper "John Rawls and American Pragmatisms," he writes: "The fact is that Rawls's views have not been well-received by philosophers who identify as pragmatists. Indeed, today's pragmatists tend to be overtly hostile to Rawls." While Weber is certainly critical of Rawls, he is never "overtly hostile." Rather, his criticisms are leveled in a melioristic spirit, aiming to improve the discourse about Rawls's political ideas by closely scrutinizing their epistemological assumptions from a pragmatist perspective.

As always an enjoyable read

As always this is a very enjoyable book. I love this author/series and have many of her books. They are well written, though sometimes the plot resolution occurs too quickly, and are not riddled with typos. Ms. Flynn does an excellent job writing characters that you can feel for. My only complaint (and the reason I can only give 4 stars instead of 5) is the huge volume of ads or samples of other books at end, approximately 25% of the book. This is unreasonable and if there is going to be that large a volume of ads at the end they should absolutely not be included in the page count provided upon purchase. When I see a 100+ page count, I expect all those pages to be part of the story. Otherwise, I do not feel as though I am getting my money's worth. I will continue to buy this series and would recommend it to others. I would just like to see some more honesty with regards to the page count.

Another awesome book in this series.

The author wrapped the characters up in bright pretty bows and delivered them straight to my heart. I think this is probably my favorite one yet (I know, I know, I’ve said that before, but this time I really mean it). I laughed and cried all the way thru the story. Can you imagine having the name of Oddfinn? Odd is the youngest, smallest, and the smartest of the Lundberg brothers. All 3 of his older brothers had one dream that brought them to the school so they could find and save their mates. But Odd has been having different dreams for the last 4 years and he spent that time doing what God wanted him to. So, when he finally gets to the school, God makes sure that one of the first people he meets is his mate, Seth. But he isn’t there to save Seth, he’s there to help save everyone. Seth has been at the school for several years, and knows the routine and is raising his son Danny. But Odd doesn’t like children and they don’t like him!!! I really liked Odd, he doesn’t always relate well to others and it takes getting him to start rambling before he is able to finally tell Seth how he feels. I love how the author involves characters from oprior stories so that we know what is going on with them, letting us know who is sleeping on the couch tonight. I can’t wait to see what comes next. Think I will start re-reading the series from the beginning. I would strongly recommend this series and this author to anyone who likes m/m and some very well written stories.

Another Winner--Another Lundberg

I have been waiting for the runt of the litter. Wow, did his brothers miss the mark--someone should have said he was a genius. Well, not at relationships, but in legal manuerving he is a genius. He came in with truckloads of stuff, a full vision, and a remedy for the problem introduced in the last book. There is some drama with meeting his mate and announcing it to the group before telling his mate! There is also the problem with Seth's son having a crush on Odd (good name, huh?). Flynn continues to craft believable main characters who I can identify with every time. I know, I have to suspend disbelief for hellhounds, angels, and seraphim, but, other than that--believable and human--err, you get the idea. She gives her characters quirks and foibles--because, well, most of us have them and where is the story if they were perfect? I recommend this book--but read all of them because you will get confused otherwise.
