About the Author

Dr David Lowe, Manchester Business School

David Lowe is a Senior Lecturer in Commercial Management and Head of the Project and Programme Management Affinity Group in the Innovation, Policy and Management division of MBS. He is Programme Director for the blended learning MSc in International Commercial and Contract Management and several Executive Education programmes in commercial and contract management. Clients include Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, Thales, BT, the National Skills Academy Nuclear, and the Foundation Trust Network (NHS). David is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an academic advisor of the International Association for Contract and Commercial Management (IACCM). His consultancy work includes benchmarking the engineering and project management provision of an international pharmaceutical company.

His teaching interests include: commercial management, commercial strategies and tactics, and contract management. Similarly his research interests focus on commercial and contract management within the context of project-based industries, ranging from ICT/telecommunications to aerospace and defence. Completed research projects include: an investigation of the cost of different procurement systems and the development of a predictive model; a project to assist medium sized construction companies develop strategic partnerships and diversify into new business opportunities offered by public and private sector clients; and an investigation into the function of commercial management in the telecommunications and construction industries. His PhD, completed at UMIST, investigated the development of professional expertise through experiential learning.

His book contributions include: Contract Management, in The Wiley Guide to Managing Projects (Wiley, 2004), and Commercial Management of Projects: Defining the Discipline (Blackwell Publishing, 2006) which he edited with Roine Leiringer. The latter is the first book to establish a theoretical framework for commercial management.

Excellent book!

This is an excellent book that is ideal for someone new to automotive electrical/electronic systems and even someone like myself who has worked on cars for decades but can use a good review of these systems. The pictures and illustrations are so clear and colorful that they are almost stunning when you open the book. In fact, they are the best photographs and illustrations that I have ever seen in a book of this type. They are large and beautifully clear and the pages are of very high-quality glossy and thick paper.

I was a bit surprised by the amount of information about old electrical systems with distributors, points, generators, regulators, etc. But that's OK and someone working on a older car may find it to be a plus. However, many people may have little or no interest in the older systems and a unusally large percentage of the book is devoted to long obsolete systems. I would suspect that most people would prefer that the book emphasized modern electronics more. Don't get me wrong: The book does cover modern systems but I would say at least about 1/2 of it is about old systems. Also, know that this does not cover OBD systems at all but I'm actually glad that it doesn't because that's a subject in itself. (I bought the two most popular books listed on Amazon about OBD systems on Amazon and I found the Haynes book to be, by far, the better of the two. I have written a review of both of them. The Haynes book would be a perfect companion to this book.)

One funny thing that I noticed is that, in numerous pictures in the book, the author is shown using a DMM set to read AC voltage when he is reading a DC circuit. In fact, I don't know how he even got a reading on his meter as shown in the pictures. It's a small thing but it's funny that the author didn't catch that.

This book will be an excellent resource for me and I think others will find it valuable too. It's well worth the money.

it does a great job even on new cars

it does a great job even on new cars. One thing that I recommend to anyone buying an automotive scanner, buy and READ the books written on these things. Then get on the internet and read some more if you really want to fix your car. Most of these readers are very generic and will point to a probable problem. Read more and compare symptoms of related problems. Example, I had a P174 code on my Ford, basically too much air leakage in the plenum. Besides some serious work of removing the plenum, replacing seals and cleaning the EGR ports in the intake manifold, I discovered a badly rusted EGR tube at the exhaust pipe. One code doesn't tell the whole story. If you're looking for ABS capability, you'll find very few that will work with newer cars. Look them up and write to the scanner mfg. before you buy it.

very interesting

This book is a good one for the backyard mechanic who wants to learn a little bit about electricity and electronics in his/her car. It explains how to read a wiring diagram. It has several sections on cars' different electrical systems (charging system, starting system, sensors, etc) with explanations on how they work and how to troubleshoot them, which could really help you save some money down the road. Now you can do some troubleshooting on your car instead of `shotgunning' parts at it.
This book is easy to read, clearly explained, and nicely formatted, with a lot of figures/diagrams/pictures in color.
Although I was a little skeptical when I first bought it, I now find it more and more useful as I keep learning about cars.

He received the Eric Mitchell Prize for his book on twentieth century art, and was also recipient of a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres awarded by the French Government. Kasper Monrad is an art historian and the author of several books.

Paintings That Speak

I was shocked, actually, how much I liked these paintings. I've seen other musicians artwork, such a Paul McCartney, etc. and I won't invalidate them as art, but my experience of those was that there was something missing. I am a painter, and student of painting, painters, art history. These painting seem to have it all, and I'm not one to lavish praise on lightly. They are full of heart, meaning, content, psychological expression. He paints like a musician. They are also very skilled, and it's nice to see paintings that contain both. So often we suspect, in these cases, that because someone is currently famous, they will just kind of be able to cash in on their name and ride the wave of fame, engage in whatever art form, and people will buy it, or want to view it. In this case, the work is worth seeing, is of high merit, and holds it own. Also, he somehow manages to to use watercolor in a way seems much more substantial than most. I was surprised to find out they were watercolor. At first glance, I suspected oil. It's as if it has texture, and this is certainly using watercolor pain in an innovative way

This is a lovely hardcover book that displays Bob Dylan drawings worth the price. An additional copy for someone who likes his work would be affordable. I am very pleased with this large catalog of his drawings.

Not what I had expected

I had high hopes for this book, but it did not live up to my expectations. First, the positives... The breakdown on types of composition, along with thumbnail sketches, are VERY valuable. I also really liked Payne's suggestion that artist's study the compositions of others, as well as his own examples (i.e his thumbnails of other artists' work). If I remember correctly, Payne recommended that one should make thumbnails of others' work, which would certainly be very useful for most of us looking to improve our compositions. I don't think that Payne had listed every type of composition possible in landscape, though he listed most and he acknowledged he was not the final word on art. I would buy this book again, but just for the "meat" of the book. There was a lot of fluff to pad the book out, which is extremely unfortunate, because an artist of Payne's caliber certainly had more to offer us.

As for the negatives. I felt Payne merely touched on subjects that he could have written on in greater depth, like color, repetition, rhythm, and value. It was a slow read for me, mostly because Payne was extremely redundant. This was especially true in the first chapter and much of the third chapter, where Payne did not so much address composition as the necessity of learning the principles of art, while fostering artistic originality, although he repeated it in about a hundred different ways! Also, the book contains MANY typos; I thought editing was part of the publishing process, but I guess not. The addendum, by Payne's daughter, is oddly disjointed. I didn't feel it was in keeping with Payne's writing on the subject of composition. She brought up her mother, Elsie Palmer Payne (an artist) quite a bit, which is understandable, but nevertheless, seemed out of place. It is, after all, Edgar Payne's book on composition. Also, as other reviewers have commented, the plates (the illustrations and prints continually referred to) are unpredictably peppered throughout the text. Needless to say, this ill-conceived layout is EXTREMELY disruptive.

So, not a perfect book, but enough valuable, practical information to make it a worthwhile buy.

Must Read for the serious Outdoor Painter

Edgar Payne was one of the great american landscape painters, as well as a great teacher, and an accomplished writer.
I found his style of English to be a little more difficult to read, but after the first chapter or two I got used to it, and it was well worth the effort.

I highly recommend reading and referring to the chapter on compositional forms. He lists a dozen of the most commonly used outdoor compositions, and gives easy examples for understanding them.

Lots and lots of valuable information!

not like most artists books that contain pictures from the artist

This book is not as represented. It appears large in the picture, but don't be deceived; it is a very small book probably about 5X7, not like most artists books that contain pictures from the artist. I bought this for my husband who is an artist and whose library consists of books such as this that are all at least 10X12 and easy to read and look through.

I wish I found this book earlier

I am so glad I have this book now. It's changed the way that I do statistics. To me reading this book has been like taking the "red pill" in a world where everyone takes the "blue pill" and lives in a 'blissful' world where they don't have to worry about model uncertainty in their research. I know this statement sounds drastic but I truly believe what I am saying. You will fully understand what I mean if you read the book.

I'm a PhD graduate student in economics who does lots of applied statistics research to examine causality. One thing that economists and econometricians RARELY discuss is model uncertainty and pretesting. The common thing to do is to pick a model without much justification, or pretest to select a model. Then they assume that the selected model is the "true" on (the blue pill in action). Now that I know that there are problems with this approach, it's changed the way I see statistical inference for the better.

The section on model averaging is great as well. Model averaging is something that really needs to be picked up by applied statisticians. It has only recently been considered by macroeconomists. This book, and the related literature, have led me to work on my own paper on model averaging in causal inference, where the choice of your model is pretty important. So that's an added bonus.

This book covers model selection and model averaging in depth. The approach is both intuitive and rigorous, so it should appeal to applied statisticians (like me) and more "pure" statisticians. The examples in the book are very eye opening, interesting, and relevant to various research interests. The examples show how poor statistical inference can be when model uncertainty is ignored. Looking at a graph of coverage probabilities for a post AIC pretest estimator kind of blew my mind. It's insane how bad they are.

I highly recommend that all economists who use data get this book. It goes without saying that this book is excellent for statisticians as well.

this is an excellent book

Well, I'm biased, since I'm the author -- but I do nevertheless think it's excellent. Part of the reason is that it touches topics that I consider "mainstream and important" for the modern statistician.

One needs to be able not only to take any reasonable model (or often enough actually invent a new one, for its specific purpose) and fit it to one's data, complete with interpretation, parameter estimates, and assessment of their precision; but one needs to compare such a model with other candidate models, and somehow converge to a reasonable decision of the type "model seven appears to be better than the other nine I tried out, for these & these specific reasons". The book also pushes the idea that you need to be conscious about the specific use to which the selected model will be put -- a good model for mean structure (often arrived at using the AIC, say) may not do a good job for you if you are more interested in say skewness or extreme aspects; hence the FIC (the Focussed Information Criterion).

This "mainstream and important" aspect has been appreciated when I've been teaching this material, either qua full one-semester course [...] or via say two-day short courses. I have "happy customers" backing up my claim of its usefulness, not only to the theoretically inclined mathematical statisticians (a stratum to which I belong) but also to the so-called practitioners out there.

We've also been complimented for the generous & broad list of real world data examples, ranging from a Nobel Prize quarrel (between Sholokhov and Solzhenitsyn) and life times in Roman Era Egypt to the (almost!) exponential decrease of beer foam and World Cup Football match prediction. We also include a thorough & enlightened discussion of The Quiet Scandal of Statistics.

So, yes, I do hope you buy the book & benefit from using it (and encourage both complimenting and complementing opinions).

Highly recommendable book that will improve your understanding of statistics

This book is highly recommended. For me this book has fulfilled (at least) two purposes. The book has provided me with the necessary analytical tools to apply model selection criteria and model averaging in practice, and to understand what is really going on when doing so. This has certainly substantially improved my abilities in doing statistical inference. Furthermore, the book has provided me with a deeper philosophical understanding of model uncertainty and the possibilities and limitations of statistical inference. If you want to do statistics (at an above basic level) you should simply not take the risk to not read this book. I can also recommend following Nils Lid Hjort's lectures on the topic
