RIVETING SEQUEL

This sequel to The Other Sister is so outstanding! It fills in so many blanks and questions. It revels so much about each individual character and the two as a couple, especially Will. There was so much I did not anticipate or see coming.It also helped to fill in some blanks about the "good sister". Leanne Davis is a truly gifted author. She is an outstanding story teller who excels at character development to the extent that you feel you really know the principal characters, because they are so real and alive. The story has so many twists and turns, I could not stop reading until I had finished the book. It was rivieting! Treat yourself and read the entire Sister series!

I loved this from book 1, have read every one of them. So much emotion and love that it carries you through their problems of saving their lives and the love so somewhere down the road they can be happy and normal. It was fantastic getting the in between time with Jessie and Will, love these characters, their strong, devoted, resilient and loving. Jessie has endured so much trauma in her life, and for her to come so far and be the way she is now is a testament to how much strength she has. I applaud you Leanne for capturing so much emotion, tragedy, hope, and love in this series, Its awesome!!!! Have read other books by Leanne and have not been disappointed, highly recommend her work to anyone that wants a interesting, heartbreaking, intriguing, romantic, exciting, journey.

Wonderful Read!

Wow! It does not get better than this! I have just finished reading Will and Jessie's story and find myself bursting with emotion. I loved them both in The Other Sister and to read of their struggles in depth was wonderful. My heart ached for Will who appears so strong and yet when he showed the emotional side of him made me love him even more. Jessie is so strong and yet does not realise this and to see her and Will as they make their way through their marriage and try to become a "normal" couple makes a great story. There were also parts of their struggle I did not see coming and these added to my enjoyment of this book. Once again Leanne Davis has demonstrated what a brilliant and talented author she is. Please read this book you will love it.

I watched the movie starring Eli Wallach and wanted to see how the book or play ends. I thought I would be able to locate this in a library but couldn't find it anywhere and decided to try to see if I could purchase a copy. The movie was deemed pornographic for its time and I guess that could be why I had such a challenge locating a copy of the book.

The book is in a very simple form the playwright by Tennessee Williams and it has proven to be a really good read, a bit different from the film but it's nice to compare the differences.

About the Author
J. David Spiceland received his MBA at Southern Illinois University and his Ph.D. at University of Arkansas. Dr. Spiceland has been recognized for his teaching, and is active in the AAA.

Jim Sepe received his MBA at the University of California—Berkeley and his Ph.D. at the University of Washington. He has received numerous teaching awards at Santa Clara University.

Mark Nelson is the Eleanora and George Landew Professor of Accounting at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, where he has been teaching Intermediate Accounting at the MBA level out of Spiceland's Intermediate Accounting for several years. He received his BBA degree from Iowa State University and his MA and PhD degrees from Ohio State University.

Larry Tomassini is professor of accounting and MIS and director of the undergraduate accounting program at The Ohio State University. He has held several endowed chair positions during his academic career, including the Ernst and Young Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois and the Peat Marwick Mitchell Centennial Professorship in Accounting at the University of Texas.

Each page includes one lightly comical line drawing of a child expressing feelings such as quizzical, annoyed, amused, or distressed. Not only is this a good resource for teachers who discuss idioms in the classroom but it also has some appeal for browsers, though readers who come looking for the logic behind the English language may leave thinking it "curiouser and curiouser." Get on the bandwagon

Right off the bat, if you're autistic like me and have trouble understanding idioms, this product will surely knock your socks off. There are many idiom books out there, but I heard through the grapevine that this book was the cream of the crop. Now I usually take advice like that with a grain of salt, but I'm happy I went out on a limb and buried my head in the sand with this one, because it has truly made understanding idioms a piece of cake.

It's a shot in the arm to know that no longer will I be in stuck in a conversation with my autism as an albatross around my neck every time I open my mouth; I am now able to bury the hatchet with language. It's books like these that give you a leg up where genetics let you down. I highly recommend this book.

I really would LOVE to recommend this book for all of people who are learning English as a second language and hope to know English idioms. I am from Ukraine, but now I am staying in LA to learn English. I was looking for some books that could helps me to understand the meaning of idioms because sometimes it was too difficult for me to figure out what they mean. This book has more than 700 idioms with examples, meanings and origins. The origins help me to remember the idioms easier. After I read some, I finally understand why people use idioms in particular situations and I feel like I will never forget them. It may not really helpful for academic courses or daily conversation, but it is easy to read anytime and it is good for FUN! Unless I am older than twenty, this book is fun enough! And especially, this is cheaper than others. So, I'd like to say just buy and read. I am 99% sure that buying this book is going to be a good choice

Great resource for people learning English

I bought this book to help as I tutor a Mexican woman in English. Idioms can be the hardest thing to learn, since they don't always make sense. I wanted to be sure she understands them, even if she doesn't always have to come up with them herself. There are multiple ways to say things and she can get her message across without using idioms, but she will be at a disadvantage if she doesn't recognize them when someone else uses them.

I like that the book includes 3 resources for each idiom - a definition, a use in a sentence, plus the derivation. Also, the idioms are listed in alphabetical order, so it is an easy reference. This book should make learning more fun.

Like Liver and Onion; Realistic, though not the Happiest Thing on Earth.

For me, this was a fantastic read. But there's two things to think about before picking this up:

1. It's written in second person (When I saw YOU), and that's a little jarring. This is honestly the first story I've read in second person that wasn't written by a first grader. I would've preferred first person, but, well, we can't always get what we want.

2. That dark, nameless presence thing is more a symbol than a part of the book. So if you're (Second person, I'm so clever) looking for a supernatural/paranormal book, it's more supernormal than paranatural.

If those two things are okay, then definitely, read this. Basically, this is a story about the narrator dealing with her father as he's sick and dying and can't do much for himself. Most of the story is told through flashbacks of the narrator living with her dad or dealing with her siblings (who show up for his dying time as well) and all those dramatic family dynamics like a sitcom's Thanksgiving episode.

Maybe that's not the best holiday since this is set in the UK. But it's not all bangers and trainers; even if you're unlucky enough NOT to be married to a hot Brit, it shouldn't be a problem. (Poor, poor, people)

Full disclosure, I work in end of life care, and people react to their loved ones dying in different ways. Some people that read this might think that the family is apathetic, cold, unrealistic, but in my experience, that's a common way to grieve when the death is slow and drawn out. Families grieve in different ways. This book doesn't the kind of heartwarming, friendly advice like a televangelist saying all is well, but focuses on a different, troubled family and how they deal with it. And the depiction of these people and how they deal with it is the most real I've seen yet.

There's more inspirational, life-changing books about the dying process out there, but for one with a less happy tone that realistically shows the way a broken family deals with the passing of the glue that held them together, read this one.

Weak character voice and ill-defined characters

This is a book about a woman whose father is dying. I came to this book, given its title (and fantastic reviews), looking for words to help me understand, or classify, my own feelings because my dad, too, is in his final days.

Perhaps my disappointment comes from the LACK of words that I was expecting. Reviewers praise the author's lyrical language, and the beauty of her descriptions... but I simply wasn't dazzled. I wanted more introspection, more profundity. I wanted to feel the narrator's pain, yet found her character weak and vague, and constantly complaining to herself. She was so selfish as a narrator, that she barely gave any depth to her siblings' characters. Instead of finishing the book at a meager 144 pages, I would have preferred a deeper understanding of why the others took such superficial roles in caring for their father, and of the feelings they had for him and for each other. Even the dying father, the other protagonist, is faint and undefined. Many wonderful words could have been spent in describing him, his feelings and perhaps his last reflections.

Finally, there are other themes in the book that merited further detail, such as the imaginary creature lurking in the shadows and its meaning and relevance to the main character. Also, I wanted to learn of the aftershocks after the mother abandoned them, and how her absence impacted the family.

Cracks in the Fa�ade

In this intense novella we see an already damaged family dealing with the impending death of their father. Our narrator is the beleaguered middle child and daddy's girl, who seems to be the rock holding everything together -- until the cracks in her fa�ade begin to show. Interactions with her siblings bring out the comfort of that shared experience, but also the strains of their lives together. As her father's life ebbs, she drifts into remembering the very worst times in her life and a memory of something that may or may not have happened -- and something that waits outside the house. In his introduction, Graham Joyce calls it 'fractured realism' and it fits. A strong exploration of the dark spectre we must all find a way to deal with sooner or later.

Only 70% of the movie version

My 8 year old son enjoyed it very much up until the part where it cuts off and leaves the reader hanging. These junior novelizations tend to follow the plot of the corresponding movies up until a point and then just stop, as if to force you to go out and watch the movie. But the whole reason I buy the junior novels for my son is that he gets the superhero story without the intenseness of the adult movie version. But when he only gets 70% of the movie, I have to end up having to tell him how the story ends, based on the movie version that I saw. So, this is a decent book, but it is mildly disappointing that the book is incomplete.

Audible version ends halfway through the movie story

I got the Audible version of this, 1 hour and 50 minutes of narration. This is essentially a narrative of the first half of the movie. It follows the movie very closely, and doesn't add anything new, until the end of the audiobook where it diverges significantly. Unlike the movie, the book ends on a cliffhanger roughly halfway through the movie.

If you (or your child) have watched the movie, there's really no need to listen to this. Even if you haven't, I'm not sure you'd want your story to end halfway at a cliffhanger. I'm not sure if the book and MP3 version are the same since Amazon's "Look Inside" doesn't show the chapters.

More because it was well written....

This book was written very well and had some of the actual quotes from the movie. But it didn't follow the plot and jumps from the beginning of the movie to the end. Any Bucky and Steve relationship Isn't really there so... =P And NO ROMANOGERS!!!!!! (StevexNatasha) They aren't even friends really.....
Still pretty good if it reading it for the Cap action. U can't hate him!

About the Author
Octavia E. Butler (1947–2006) was a bestselling and award-winning author, considered one of the best science fiction writers of her generation. She received both the Hugo and Nebula awards, and in 1995 became the first author of science fiction to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. She was also awarded the prestigious PEN Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. Her first novel, Patternmaster (1976), was praised both for its imaginative vision and for Butler’s powerful prose, and spawned four prequels, beginning with Mind of My Mind (1977) and finishing with Clay’s Ark (1984).�Although the Patternist series established Butler among the science fiction elite, it was Kindred (1979), a story of a black woman who travels back in time to the antebellum South, that brought her mainstream success. In 1985, Butler won Nebula and Hugo awards for the novella “Bloodchild,” and in 1987 she published Dawn, the first novel of the Xenogenesis trilogy, about a race of aliens who visit earth to save humanity from itself. Fledgling (2005) was Butler’s final novel. She died at her home in 2006.� ���

Orson Scott Card has nothing on Octavia!

Think Sherri Tepper at her height (not the preachiness she's descended to). Think Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Think the moral dilemna's and characterization of Robin Hobb. When you think of these things you're close to understanding this series by Octavia Butler. Being a black woman I was initially intrigued by the idea of afro-centric science fiction. But this is soooo much more than that. Octavia Butler is one of the most talented sci fi writers I've read in god knows how long. Her characters may be racially African-American (and sometimes just African, and usually a mix of a lot of different races) but this book has nothing really to do with that. It does lightly explore racial inequalities, but focuses more on social inequalities, the plight of the impoverished. Even better than that the REAL focus of the book is the science fiction. It's not just a social commentary with a touch of the extraordinary. It's true hard core sci/fi fantasy, and it is extraordinary.

The book follows a race of mentally gifted individuals of all ethnicities forward in time from the pre-slavery era to around 2225. These individuals are breed like cattle to be the companions, family, science project and ultimately FOOD of the scariest super villian you ever want to read about....Doro. Doro is a superbeing, a soul-vampire. He is immortal in that he jumps bodies but not like the rather kindly Lestat in Anne Rices series. He has to jump bodies, it's how he feeds. He likes it. And the more mentally talented the person is the better the food tastes to him. He also has the ability of tracking a person that he's met anywhere, across continents and across time. You cant escape him, and the last thing you want to do is kill him. That would only precipitate him jumping into YOUR body. Doro, collects mentally gifted individuals and breeds them together for his own amusement and as a source of food. I don't want to tell you much more becuase it would ruin the surprise. Suffice it to say that because of his tampering he breeds a race of humans that become a bit much to handle in later years.

The description I've just given you is pretty clinical. THe great thing about this book is that Octavia's superb writing allows you to live in these peoples lives, experience their powers and their terrible limitations. She puts the slave collar on your own neck and lets the blisters rise on your own skin. You can see, feel and taste their world.

I strongly reccomend this book to anyone who likes the writers I listed in the first paragraph. My advice to you is to be mentally ready...you're about to go on a real rollor coaster ride.

Great series

I found this title while browsing around Amazon's New in Fiction January list, and was quite excited about the prospect of a new Butler book. Unfortunately, it is a compilation of books I've already read...bummer! I echo the comment left before me -- if you're new to Butler, great series to read.

Compilation includes the following novels: Wild Seed, Mind of My Mind, Clay's Ark, and Patternmaster.

If you have all the other books, don't get ripped off

I was extremely excited to learn that Octavia Butler had written a final book before her departure, and as she was my favorite author I rushed out to get this last work. Unfortunately, its a trick because its only a compilation of her pre-existing work and contains NO NEW MATERIAL! So, unless you're new to Butler, don't bother picking this one up. If you are new to Butler, its an excellent read and saves room on the bookshelf!
