Gr 3–5—Frederick Douglass's journey from slavery to international renown as writer and lecturer is broadly sketched here. Readers meet Douglass eye to eye as he gazes, serious and frowning, from a commanding portrait filling the entire front cover of the large square picture book. An unusual design choice places the title and creator names in bold text on the back cover. The poignant childhood years, some enjoyed and others endured, make for a touching, memorable story. About a third of the work is devoted to Douglass's adulthood. Emphasizing his role as a man of words, Rappaport includes frequent quotations. She focuses on Douglass's oratory and writing accomplishments but tells almost nothing of the man's personal life. In a rare specific example when she does, readers learn that Douglass's friends bought his freedom for $710.96. He went on to lecture in Great Britain and Ireland, started a newspaper, became friendly with Abraham Lincoln, and was involved with the Underground Railroad. Although the book features a concluding list of "Important Dates," Rappaport often neglects to mention where and when key events occurred: overall, this is a quick introduction accompanied by some striking visuals. Ladd casts a sepia glow in handsome scenes of key figures, and his illustrator's note adds a fun light on his painting of them. The many existing children's books about Douglass include works by well-known writers, some of which are included in the "Selected Research Sources" section. About the Author
Doreen Rappaport's nonfiction and historical fiction books have been acclaimed for their meticulous research and varied literary styles. She is the recipient of the Washington Post-Children's Book Guild lifetime achievement award for the writing of nonfiction. Among her many award-winning biographies are Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., illustrated by Bryan Collier, a Caldecott Honor Book, Coretta Scott King Honor Book, Orbis Pictus Honor Book, and a Jane Addams Children's Book Award winner; Abe's Honest Words: The Life of Abraham Lincoln, illustrated by Kadir Nelson, a CCBC Best Book of the Year, an IRA Teacher's Choice, and winner of Library of Virginia's Whitney and Scott Cardoza Award; and Helen's Big World, illustrated by Matt Tavares, an ALA Notable Book for Middle Readers, CCBC Best Book of the Year, and an Oppenheim SNAP (Special Needs Adaptable Products) Award winner. Beautifully Illustrated and Historically Informative

One of the really fun things about having kids in elementary school is re-living what I learned as a child. I always loved school and have always been an avid reader. I have to admit though, I've lost some of the information learned over the years and my memory is not what it used to be! I've found that reading history with my kids helps me remember all the details as well!
My kids haven't gotten to the life of Frederick Douglass yet but Frederick's Journey about his life was a great introduction and a great history re-cap for me!
My kids are six and seven and this book was designed for 6 - 8 year olds so it was perfect for them. I had my seven year old read it out loud to us as part of his required reading for homework.
The illustrations are beautiful and every single one looks like a work of art and is the perfect companion to the story. Once you are familiar with the story you could almost just retell it through the pictures without reading the words.
This is a man whose life is an incredible story of hope and perseverance. He is a success story of a man born a slave who suffered for years but because of his determination to learn to read, was able to successfully live as a free man. His life is an inspiration and the type I want my children to look to for inspiration.
My kids haven't learned about slavery yet so they had a lot of questions and it opened the door to some really interesting conversations. It's hard watching them learn about the ways of the world but it's a necessary evil. History is a part of the landscape of who we all are so it's important for it to be told.
Frederick's Journey is a great read, beautifully illustrated and historically informative.

Inspirational Nonfiction Picture Book

FREDERICK’s JOURNEY by Doreen Rappaport tells the inspirational true story of a slave boy who ultimately achieves freedom and spreads his abolitionist beliefs to promote change.
The author skillfully weaves together a nonfiction narrative that combines Douglass’ life story with excerpts from his writings and speeches. Amazing illustrations by London Ladd add to the power of this important story.
In addition to the narrative itself, the book also includes an Author’s Note, Illustrator’s Note, timeline, and sources.
The Big Words series is an excellent way to introduce youth to key historical figures. Librarians will find Frederick’s Journey to be an excellent addition. Consider creating a display that features this entire series. Incorporate a timeline that shows how the books are connected chronologically and thematically.

Beautiful, powerful, moving, sensitively told for children

Beautiful book and illustrations, excellent writing, and sensitive treatment of painful but important topics. We happened on this at the library and had to get our own copy. It's gorgeous. It was tricky to find on Amazon. That's a shame bc it should be widely read!
