Freelance author, blogger, and ex-Indian Air Force physician Sunanda Joshi Chatterjee completed her graduate studies in Los Angeles, where she is a practicing pathologist. While medicine is her profession, writing is her passion. When she’s not at the microscope making diagnoses, she loves to write fiction. Her life experiences have taught her that no matter how different people are, their desires, fears, and challenges remain the same.
Her themes include romantic sagas, family dramas, immigrant experience, women’s issues, medicine, and spirituality. She loves extraordinary love stories and heartwarming tales of duty and passion.�Her short stories have appeared in short-story.net and induswomanwriting.com.

A page-turning saga that takes the reader from India to California

This book was such a pleasant surprise. This was a new author to me, and I didn't expect to be drawn into the story so quickly or swept away by it. I started reading in the evening and was just going to read a few pages to see what it was like. Next thing I knew it was past midnight and I couldn't stop until I finished. It was that good. I love to get lost in a big, sweeping saga, and that is what this book delivered. I am also a very picky reader, so I don't say that lightly.
What hooked me at the beginning were the rich descriptions of Bombay. The sights and sounds and smells, were so vivid that I felt like I was there. There is drama and unanswered questions from the start, which kept the pages turning. Moyna is a likable character and I was rooting for her as her journey took her to college in California. She finds love, but fights it as she fights demons from her past and discovers connections where she doesn't expect to find them. This story follows Moyna through college and the years following and it stayed with me. I love big, sweeping, dramatic stories like this. Highly recommended. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I was drawn in immediately by the wonderful descriptions of India… the colors

This book provided a really visceral experience of another culture for me. I was drawn in immediately by the wonderful descriptions of India… the colors, the odors and the feel of it. And the characters were all extremely relatable. There are a lot of different themes in this book – love, loss, independence, loyalty and trust… and they are all woven very sweetly into the story of one young girl’s struggle to find herself and to find love. We follow the main character, Moyna, in her travels from her dangerous yet familiar home in India, to America, where she searches for belonging and purpose.The author very compellingly shows us how guilt and shame affect Moyna's ability to be happy, yet she is a strong character nonetheless and she's survivor. In spite of the abuse in her past and the difficult circumstances she faces, fear does not hold Moyna back. I found myself really rooting for her! The story is full of twists and turns and kept me intrigued from start to finish. I really enjoyed this book and was sad to let go of Moyna when I finished it.

Really impressed with this book!

Shadowed Promise is a beautifully told story of a young girl’s journey from family struggles in India to finding love and friendship in America while carrying misguided guilt and self-blame because of her past.
I absolutely loved the main character - her passion and determination, her caring heart, her strength in the face of horrible tragedies. I could relate to her experiences, thoughts, and feelings and I greatly enjoyed reading about her striking journey.
The book is very well paced - I couldn’t put it down! The author has astounding descriptive talent and I thoroughly enjoyed the weaving of Indian background and traditions throughout the book. I especially appreciated the author’s portrayal of the differences between the main female character having grown up in India, and the main male character, an Indian having grown up in the US.
I loved how the author related the inner thoughts and turmoil of each character - it shows real insight into our nature, as human beings. The descriptive style was so vivid, I was laughing and crying the whole time I was reading.
Amazingly written, wonderful, exciting but also heartbreaking at times - you are going to love reading this book! I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys a moving, heartwarming story.
