Maybe the series is getting a little long in the tooth

While I still found this installment to be interesting not seeing Suzi Shooter for almost the entire book just felt wrong and really Green seems to be casting about for a new way to keep the series interesting that he just can't seem to find. Hell to Pay was fine not only did it deal with the power vacuum left over from the Lilith War it also had an A story that was interesting. That is not the case in this book. Shooter is gone replaced with an idiotic stand-in I wanted to strangle after 10 pages. The interesting power vacuum stuff raised in the last book was not touched on at all and the part of the story where John goes in search of yet another magic object that could spell the end of all life in the Nightside is starting to wear a little thin plus the item isn't even all that impressive when you stack it up against all of the others he has dealt with over the years.

In spite of my problems with this book I am actually kind of encouraged it has not been my experience with Green that he continues down a bad track when he realizes he has dug himself into a hole. I hated "Nightside's Lement" and almost put the series aside but the book after that unfortunate installment was the start of all of the events that lead to the Lilith war so just because something is a little stale right now doesn't mean that it will stay that way. I am hopeful. Maybe another trip through time would help?

Overall-I'm going to keep on trucking with this series but the next installment is really going to have to "wow" me to get me back on board.

I vaguely remember reading this awhile ago, so glad I picked it up again. Because I'd read the previous books in the series, I understood it so much better. Wonderful world, so well-written and imaginative - totally awesome!

Recording from the Afterlife

The Unnatural Inquirer (2008) is the eighth fantasy novel in the Nightside series, following Hell to Pay. In the previous volume, John Taylor changed the contract in regard to Jeremiah Griffin's children and they were set free. Melissa broke out of the pentacle and helped herd the children from the cellar. But Jeremiah was left to fulfill the contract.

In this novel, Taylor has just finished a case for the H. P. Lovecraft Memorial Library in which a book was reading the patrons. Outside the entrance, Walker and Suzie Shooter are waiting for him. Walker has hired Suzie to find Max Maxwell, but the man has disappeared beyond her kenning.

Maxwell has found the Aquarius Key and used it to force the Voudon gods to possess his minions. The loa are very irritated and have turned the tables on Maxwell. Now he is hiding from a herd of possessed bounty hunters. Naturally, Taylor soon finds Maxwell and gives him to Walker for incarceration in the Shadow Deep.

Then Cathy calls from the office and tells Taylor that the Unnatural Inquirer wants to hire him for a large amount of money. Naturally the gossip sheet wouldn't tell his secretary about the case, but did give Cathy a place where he will be met by a runner who will guide him to their office.

The Unnatural Inquirer has a larger circulation than the Night Times, but also has more enemies. So many people have tried to attack their offices that they brag about the futility of such attempts. Their main offices are located within a pocket dimension.

Taylor is met by Harry Fabulous and keyed into the Reception office. As soon as they arrive, every alarm in the place goes off. Taylor apparently has every indication of armed and dangerous. After Harry explains that Taylor is there by invitation, Security desensitizes the system to ignore him.

After a long wait, Taylor is taken to the office of Scoop Malloy, the Sub-Editor. Scoop introduces him to Bettie Divine, the daughter of a Rolling Stone and a succubus groupie. They will be working together on the case. Of course, Taylor vehemently disagrees to the partnership, but the paper offers a lot more money.

Scoop explains that Pen Donavon -- a low level curiosity dealer -- has offered the paper a DVD with a broadcast from a supernatural source. The paper eventually offered him a contract and he was on his way to the offices when he disappeared. None other than Donavon has seen the contents of the DVD, but the Inquirer is ready to buy it for the sheer publicity value.

In this story, Taylor finds Bettie remarkably easy to get along with, even if she is cheerful to the point of bubbliness. Her clothes change over time to keep her attractive regardless of the ambiance. She thinks he is a celebrity and his conversation reinforces this idea. He mentions -- and meets -- people about whom Bettie has only written stories.

Taylor first tries to find the DVD with his third -- private -- eye, but someone -- or something -- powerful clamps down on his senses. He quickly closes off the third eye, but still feels the effects. So Taylor tries the old fashioned way.

He starts at Donavon's store and living quarters. The store is full of Timeslip junk suitable for tourists and his quarters are so messy that it is impossible to tell whether they have been searched. Taylor does get to see the television upon which the signal was received and the DVD was made, but finds nothing of any use.

Then he goes to the Street of the Gods to get the latest gossip. He finds that his information is better than their rumors, but the gods and priests start getting ideas from his news. Taylor and Bettie leave just as the riot starts.

Next, Taylor tries getting information from the Collector, but the man has relocated after his moon facility was leaked to the press. Taylor finds his current location from Walker. After some strenuous efforts, Taylor gets into the new quarters, but the Collector doesn't know where the DVD can be found.

Then Taylor tries the Cardinal, a collector of religious artifacts. Taylor gets into the place by threatening to tell the Collector where the Cardinal is residing. But the Cardinal knows nothing either.

Taylor is running out of ideas when his phone rings. Alex tells him that Pen Donavon in sitting in the Strangefellows bar asking about him. Taylor uses his membership card to transit to the bar.

This tale stirs the Nightside into a religious and financial frenzy. Everybody who is anybody is looking for the DVD. The rumors of its contents are growing by the minute. Does it herald the second coming?

The story shows Taylor in his usual mix of bluff and tricks when faced by overwhelming odds. Bettie is aghast at his termination of thirteen combat sorcerers who are trying to kill Taylor and herself. Her image of a knight in gleaming armor is beginning to fray around the edges. Enjoy!

Highly recommended for Green fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of strange powers, hellish deals, and unrequited love.

An autobiography is a way of looking inside a person's mind. We have no real right to expect objectivity or "the long view" on any given subject.
Isadora Duncan's autobiography is a terrific example of the above. She was a hugely talented, flamboyant individual who chose to march to her own drummer from an early age. She is passionate in her descriptions of her inner life, her career and her lovers and changed the whole concept of "The Dance", breaking away from ballet (which she considered ugly and contrived) and inventing what we'd call "modern dance".
She was a fantastic dancer, but as a writer she is far too interested in her own inner world. The people around her float by as a succesion of badly defined cardboard cutouts, and one visited city sounds much like any other. After a while this DOES get rather boring. The lack of dates (such as "that was in 1925" or whatever) or a neatly defined chapter structure means that it's pretty hard to keep track of the passage of time. In the end, reading this book becomes a bit of a struggle: it's like being stuck in a someone's rather boring dreamworld.
Her sollipsism is (at times) a bit of a hoot and her inability to perceive the world for what it is provide the reader with occasional bits of unintentional black comedy.
An example: after deciding that ancient Greece was the mother of all art, Isadora sunk a great deal of her money in trying to rebuild a Greek temple. Her family spoke no Greek but lived for months amid the ruins, performing dances and wearing togas while getting cheated by the local villagers. She also formed a chorus of Greek urchins to perform ancient music and was later disappointed when during a tour, the urchins begin growing up and staying out late and coming home drunk.
A more human writer would have managed a bit of irony, a touch of sympathy for these common, simple people caught up in the mad American artist's vision, but Isadora never quite manages it. Sadly, it is precisely this sort of self-centered and humourless viewpoint that makes this book so stodgy.
On the positive side, however, one DOES get a really good idea of what Isadora Duncan was like and how she saw her art and one can't really ask for more from an autobiography.

rereading the autobiography of a ghost

I first read this book after seeing Ken Russell's film "The World's Biggest Dancer" in the 1960's The film is, unfortunately, lost. I fell in love with the myth of this fabulous woman and was impressed with Vanessa Redgrave's portrayal of her in Karel Reisz's "Isadora" also hopelessly lost I believe. This is not a great work of art: it has episodes of naively underwritten material tailored into whole paragraphs of wonderful philosophy of a futuristic world when art and beaty supercede greed and material gain. The ghost of Isadora haunts this book; a woman broken by personal tragedy writing these words in the last years of a life that, by any standards, was extraordinary. I keep it on my shelf along with Nijinsky's "Life" both books testimony to the inability of words to express the emotions of genius

As a keen fan of autobiographys this book automatically appealed to me. although I had not heard of Isadora's profound infleunce on the world of art or dance, the reviews on the book sold it for me. I thouroughly enjoyed her abstract and sometimes perplexing stories about her up- bringing. However as her travels with her family increased i found her to be quite selfish and single-minded in regards to her career. This i felt led her story, although a biography, to become quite a monotonous and tedious read. In her favour I would say that the book is written in an honest and frank manner.

About the Author

Mary Jo Hatch (PhD Stanford, 1985) is the C. Coleman McGehee Eminent Scholars Research Professor of Banking and Commerce, Emerita, at the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Copenhagen Business School, Visiting Professor Gothenburg University, and an International Research Fellow of the Centre for Corporate Reputation, Oxford University. Her research has been published in Harvard Business Review, California Management Review, Academy of Management Review, European Journal of Marketing, Human Relations, Journal of Management Inquiry, Strategic Organization, Administrative Science Quartely, and Organization. She co-authored The Three Faces of Leadership (Blackwell) with M. Kostera and A. Kozminski. She received the 2011 Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Management's Organization and Management Theory (OMT) Division.
Ann L. Cunliffe is currently Professor of Organization Studies at the University of Leeds in the UK. She has held positions at the University of New Mexico, California State University and the University of New Hampshire. She obtained her Master of Philosophy degree and Ph.D. from Lancaster University Management School. Recent publications in the field of leadership, sensemaking, reflexivity, and qualitative research methods are found in Human Relations, Organizational Research Methods and Management Learning. She was awarded the 2002 'Breaking the Frame Award' from the Journal ofManagement Inquiry for the article that best exemplifies a challenge to existing thought. Ann is currently co Editor-in-Chief of Management Learning, Consulting Editor for the International Journal of Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management, and a member of eight international journal Editorial Boards.

Dense read but organized well

This is a really, really dense read. It takes a lot of concentration and thought to read through the chapters, but I think it's organized well, provides great information and is broken into great chapters with key terms.

Clear explanations of organization theory

This was required reading in a graduate level course in strategic communication. I had absolutely no knowledge of organization theory before I took the course, but I found this book easy to understand. It gives a basic overview of different theories of how organizations are structured. As an introduction to organization theory, this book is recommended.

Wonderful watercolor book

It is a little advanced for the beginner. His watercolor technique is wonderful. Great for reference especially trees. Great for any watercolorist library.

As a animation background painter, this book is very valuable . . . needs more color though

This book is definitely made for a mid level to advance painters. As an animation background painter, I found this book to be very useful and although relatively old, the information was still very relevant. At first glance, I was a little disappointed in the lack of color, (there are some pages with color/ final painting reproductions, but most of the book is in b&w) but upon reading the text and following the examples, this book ultimately makes you focus on the composition, values, and distinct shapes that characterizes types of trees, before a painter jumps headlong into color. There is so much statement coming from the way Ted Kautzky utilizes lines, values, and brush strokes. Every piece looks like it came out of an animated movie. It's great study for mood, too. It's one of those books that doesn't look like much at first, but you'll come to treasure later on, after you make a breakthrough with your painting.

Ted's book on painting trees is full of information that any artist should find a big help. Money well spent on a book written some years ago will still be usefull today.

The best thing about this slim first novel is the title, which is the name of a trendy London punk club where some of the action is set. As a character explains, "People come here to forget but can't quite, and end up remembering something else." Hyped as the British version of Bright Lights, Big City, the book is narrated by the club's nihilistic manager, Merril, who thinks of his establishment as a "living hell" and is in love with a trendoid named Lisa. When she runs off to Europe, Merril wanders the streets pining for his sweetheart. Then she returnswith an obnoxious husband. This is the kind of novel where the making of a fruit salad is described in such detail that it seems to have some great symbolic significance, but in the end is nothing more than a bowl of cut-up apples and grapes. A clever, biting writer, Bracewell has a way with a phrase ("We were, after all, the Kiwi Fruit Generation"). But his characters are singularly unappealing (in Bracewell's words, they suffer from "spiritual anorexia"), and his style is too affected to engage the reader.

Michael Bracewell's "The Crypto-Amnesia Club"

When I read this book, I think Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music may wished he wrote "The Crypto-amnesia Club." A short novel that is more of a mood piece then anything else. i m not sure if this is Michael Bracewell's first novel, but it is not as strong as his other works. Saying that it is sort of a must-read if you like his work, and I generally love his novels.

Obsession with one woman in sort of a twilight London that flickers in and out of one's consciousness. And yes, Mid-period Roxy Music should be the soundtrack to this book.

This is a great product. The shipment was so quick that I was unable to cancel the order just a couple of hours after being placed.

I had ordered them for a 6th grade graduation class and then found out that the principal wanted the hardback version. So now, I am stuck with 12 brand new paperback dictionaries.
