About the Author
Eduardo Galeano naci� en Montevideo el 3 de septiembre de 1940 en el seno de una familia cat�lica de clase media. Hijo de un empleado p�blico y de una gerente de librer�a, Galeano fue criado en un ambiente de profundas convicciones cat�licas. Incluso, cuando ten�a ocho o nueve a�os, sostuvo que quer�a ser santo: �Tuve una infancia muy m�stica; pero no me fue bien con la santidad�. Galeano tiene una larga carrera tanto en el plano personal como en el profesional. Con tan s�lo trece a�os empez� a publicar caricaturas para el diario El Sol, un peri�dico socialista en Uruguay, bajo el pseud�nimo de �Gius� por la dificultosa pronunciaci�n en castellano de su primer apellido (Hughes). Desde muy joven empez� a trabajar; fue obrero en una f�brica de insecticidas, recaudador, pintor de carteles, mensajero, mecan�grafo, cajero de banco y editor. En la d�cada de los setenta un grupo derechista militar en Uruguay lo encarcel�. Por esta causa se march� a Argentina. Sin embargo all� ocurri� lo mismo. El r�gimen de Videla tom� el poder tras un sangriento golpe militar y su nombre fue agregado a la lista de aquellos condenados por los escuadrones de la muerte. D�as y noches de amor y de guerra, se enmarca en los d�as de la dictadura en Argentina y Uruguay. En esta ocasi�n se exili� en Catalu�a, en Calella, al norte de Barcelona donde public� en revistas espa�olas y colabor� con una radio alemana y un canal de televisi�n mexicano. En este per�odo escribe su famosa y premiada trilog�a Memoria del fuego. Con todo, la obra de Galeano no es lo �nico importante. Vinculado a causas pol�ticas y defensor de la ideolog�a de izquierdas, recuerda cuando siendo miembro de la juventud socialista iba de pueblo en pueblo a hablar de socialismo ante la mirada at�nita de aquellos pocos que se paraban a escucharle. En 1985 regres� a Uruguay. Actualmente, tras haber superado una operaci�n en el a�o 2007, reside en Montevideo. Uno de los lugares que le gusta frecuentar es el caf� El Brasileiro; adem�s dirige su editorial El Chanchito. En Galeano conviven el periodismo, el ensayo y la narrativa, pero ser� sobre todo reconocido como un cronista certero y valiente que recuerda el pasado para analizar el futuro que estamos dejando. De trato cordial y perpetuo buen humor, cree que el mejor de sus d�as �Es aquel que debe todav�a estar por venir�.

A fantastic book that should be reading requirement of all first year university students in Latin America. Many will feel that the book itself is solely a "bashing" of the United states and other developed nations but in the reality of the history which is carried by the nations of Latin America with regard to their dealings with developed countries the author does an excellent job in presenting the exploitation that has taken, and continues to take place. There will be those that will read it and inmediately will cry foul, communism. Not so. I was an international banker for many years in the region and can attest to the validity of the content.
