A very good guide to business-level modelling with UML

One of the weaknesses of the Unified Modelling Language is its relatively limited support for modelling at the Enterprise level, especially to accurately model business processes. The UML purists believe that everything should be reduced to Use Cases, while these authors recognise that much more is necessary.
The book covers five quite distinct topics:
1. An introduction to business modelling and UML, explaining the problems the authors want to help solve, and describing each of the relevant techniques of UML,
2. A proposal for a group of extensions to UML (using that language's own established extensibility mechanisms) so that that it can better model business processes,
3. A description of the variety of views and models which will be required to establish a comprehensive understanding of the business, or at least part of it,
4. A repository of "business patterns", which you can use to model the business,
5. A comprehensive worked example.
Each of these is quite detailed. In particular, the book contains probably the best introduction to the Object Constraint Language (OCL), and its use to model business rules, that I have read anywhere. The sections on how to do business modelling are also very good, as are the introductions to the relevant UML techniques.
The "Eriksson-Penker extensions for business modelling" are important because several UML-based case tools have now implemented them as an emerging standard for business process modelling with UML. If you want to fully understand how these work, this is the book to read.
The business patterns are more of a "curates egg". Some are extremely useful, and others innovative which could easily solve your problems where there is an accurate match. That said, some are less good and seem to state the obvious, although with patterns it is always difficult to know if you are judging some harshly simply because you are so familiar with them and other readers will get more value. Some of the pattern explanations are a bit repetitive, and the "examples" often sound very artificial, but overall they are useful, and a single one which solves a real business modelling problem for you will justify the rest.
At over 400 pages, some of which is occasionally slightly slow and ponderous this is not an ideal book to read from cover to cover. But it is definitely one to study, focusing on whichever topic is most relevant to you at any time, and I can happily recommend it.

Interesting concept, great work on business modeling

Sometime ago I have been wondering if somebody will try to bridge the gap between business modeling (the one used by consultants) and software engineering. It would certainly make it easier for people to understand and explain business operations.
This book is an application of the UML into the realm of business modeling. It is very good in the sense that it explains and goes through the patterns that form business models. The introduction on UML is pretty short and concise, so if you are new to it try using "Applying UML..." book to get an introduction. Be prepared to sit down and spend some time reading, since the material can be a little bit daunting to try to understand and remember all the patterns available. Overall, I wish I had this book for Systems Analysis instead of the outdated software engineering books that we used.

Good for new business modellers

Being relatively new to business modelling in the eCommerce arena, I purchased this book with the aim of guiding me to a consistent diagramatical notation/methodology for functional requirements. Whilst many customers are still more comfortable with the old flow chart and DFD, I was able to at least apply some of the principles behind the notation. I showed someone else in our workshop sessions and they took the details so they could purchase their own copy. I have compared notes with a few others and find that they either have the book or have at least seen it. I would recommend this to someone in the same situation as I was - relatively new to business modelling, yet not naive wrt analysis and design methodologies. For those who are old hands it might still be worth a look.

Great resource for teaching reading skills!

This is a great resource for helping kids to develop reading skills in a fun and clear way. It is presented as a stand-up book that can be placed in learning centers or used during small group instruction. It contains easy-to-use activities that can be done either before, during or after reading. It contains 55 activities that reinforce skills like fact and opinion, character traits, summarization, cause-effect relationships, story elements, compare and contrast, and many more. All the activities come with clear step by step instructions that will promote independent work, and most of them require filling graphic organizers or foldable activities that will make comprehension a more attainable goal and will help kids to develop high order thinking skills. The overall appearance of the book (large print, colored charts, pictures) make this resource really attractive for kids to use.

Great teaching tool

Flip for Comprehension is a great table-top teaching tool. It lends itself well to small group lessons, independent reading time and literacy centers. Because the book is self contained in its flip format, the activities you and your students need are right at hand.

During independent reading or while in literacy centers, students won't have the excuse that they don't have materials or didn't understand the instructions. Even struggling readers can use Flip for Comprehension since the directions contain graphics as well as words.

The book is well planned out, with a good balance of text and graphics. I feel comfortable letting my students work independently using Flip for Comprehension after a brief explanation from me.

Flipped For the Flip Chart

What a wonderful teaching tool Emily Cayuso has created! I keep the flip chart next to my teaching table. I'm a Reading Specialist who works with many reading groups every day, all of whom are at different levels. This chart enables me to quickly differentiate the comprehension strategies I'm using with each group.It also serves as a reminder of all the many strategies available to me in my planning,and ensures that I'm exposing my students to a variety of them.

About the Author

The Reys were born in Hamburg, Germany. Hans Augusto Rey (1898-1977) met his wife-to-be, Margret (1906-1996), at a party in her father’s home in Germany; when he first caught a glimpse of her, she was sliding down the banister. We Love George

My son loves this silly little monkey and I bought this for his 5th birthday that is coming up. Obviously it is perfect for it. He loves to have me read these stories over and over again. This is perfect for children and adults alike as George always seems to get into trouble, but in the end everything always works out for the best.
This paperback is well made, durable, and should last through many reads.

Cute book for children

We used this cute book for my son's 1st birthday that had a Curious George theme. We had the guests sign his book, so he will know who attended when he is older. It was a cute idea I came across and I know he will enjoy reading over the names as he gets older. The book is a classic cute and well written Curious George story that all of my children have enjoyed.

The cover of the book does not match the story on the inside

I ordered this book for my daughter's 2nd birthday. The cover was correct bit the inside of the book was a completely different story on the inside called Curious George and the snow. Extremely disappointed.

Half a textbook for the already high price of 1.

The content of this book is fine and what you would normally expect if you are familiar with other Deitel programming texts. However, when you see the text you will notice it is much slimmer than most Deitel texts even though it is no less expensive. The reason for this is because the publisher decided to make the second half of the book online only by pdf via its website. For those of us who like having a physical copy of the text this is really annoying and just really a rip off to the customers especially considering the price these books cost.

Good Text, but Kindle version doesn't give online access.

I purchased the Kindle version of this text. While it is a great text on VB programming. It didn't come with the Access Code needed to access the online companion site. Without this Access you don't get Chapters 16-31. So it becomes a poor choice for an eBook.

I most appreciate the business like nature of the Deitel books prose. They avoid attempts at humor, digressions, and extraneous observations. Instead they illustrate with working code all the points they make. I've come to depend on their books for learning new features, reviewing topics, and just plain enjoying their tips on error prevention, performance, software engineering, common programming errors, etc.

Amazing Series!

This series is comical as well as action packed, and with romance for the shojo lovers! With references to other popular shows, as well as original comedic moments this series has won a place in my heart! The art style is amazing, capturing the creepy-ish feel of being in the demon world without to much 'Tim Burton' rip off symbolism. All the characters are charming and have unique personalities. If your looking for something new, fun and addicting look no further than Blood Lad!

I am thoroughly enjoying this series. I love Staz's crazy, apathetic character and his ulterior motives, LOL. I only wish Fuyumi wasn't quite so clueless.... the phrase big-breasted airhead comes to mind but she isn't quite that bad. In a way, she's a good foil for Staz; and part of me wonders, after seeing her room and home life, if there isn't more to her than meets the eye. I like pretty much all of the characters that have been introduced so far. The pacing seems a bit fast, but I'm hoping this series will last a long time. It doesn't have to be "Bleach" length, but I'm hoping to get immersed in the Demon World of this series, or have a part of the series take place in the human word once Fuyumi gets her body back and Staz finally gets the chance to takea sip.... oh, the anticipation; it's what good mangas are made of!

P.S. - the anime isn't bad either, it's one of the few that follows pretty closely to the source manga.

About the Author
Louis Passfield is an applied sports scientist and an academic with expertise in training and elite performance. He is a consultant for the English Institute of Sport and has worked as sports scientist with the British Cycling team preparing for a number of Olympic Games. Rob Hayles is an Olympic track and road racing champion cyclist.

Great Primer with Coverage of the Finer Points Too

I found this to be an outstanding first read on the subject. The basics are covered well and a good mid-level view of the more advanced topics are touched on too. You won't get any hardware reviews in here (I didn't need that as I have already made my choice) so don't look for that info here. All-in-all exactly what I wanted...something to educate me quickly but thoroughly. The Hunter Allen book will probably be what I buy next if I want to go deeper in to this topic. But for now, I can talk the talk and benefit on the bike with my training.

For Fans of Racing the Beam

I loved Racing the Beam: The Atari Video Computer System (Platform Studies) and although there have been other Platform Studies books this one seemed to be the closest follow up. Since the NES is more complicated than the 2600 this book, out of necessity, is too. Not all of what Nathan Altice talks about is easily visualized and the black and white screenshots rarely illustrate effectively, so be sure to have YouTube at the ready for looking up games as they are mentioned. The section on audio is especially difficult on the page. It's an absolute must to listen to the music if you want to follow along.

The nature of print is the biggest weakness of the book, but the biggest strength is Altice's connecting the features and limitations of the hardware to the world around them. This gives context to why the NES was what it was, and how that shaped the games we all played. There are lots of books about the NES but few have tied it all together so well.

A fantastic look at the Famicom's/NES' history

I initially bought this book to read a little about the heritage of the Famicom/NES. I ended up getting that plus much, much more.

The combination of both technical and historical aspects of the system was exceptional. Being a collector of NES games, it was enlightening to finally get some additional information on the wide range of hardware and software pieces that make the system tick. I can't imagine the amount of time the author must've spent compiling all of this data; I'm very appreciative that he did.

I highly recommend this book to technical minds that enjoy reading details about early gaming systems. It's certainly applicable to the non-technical as well, although they won't be able to get quite as much out of it overall. I hope the author continues with an SFC/SNES version soon!

Good, but gets bogged down in details

The first book in the "Platform Studies" series was Racing the Beam, which is a really wonderful book on the Atari 2600. Most videogame books are fairly lightweight reads that provide broad surveys of the industry or company at a given time. Many of them also tend to go over similar stories so they start looking predictable. Racing the Beam dodged all that by doing a deep dive on the 2600, telling the story of its creation, how developers made games, its cultural influence, and how the developers did things with the system it was never designed for.

This book attempts to treat the NES the same way the 2600 is treated in Racing the Beam. The book is even structured similarly. The NES is a far more complicated piece of hardware than the 2600, and it had an even greater cultural impact. As such, this book is longer and more dense than Racing the Beam. It's also far more technical, to the point of being laborious at times. Altice does a deep dive on Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros., obviously two landmark games on the system, and one walks away from that chapter with a lot of knowledge on the system and those games. That said, unless you have experience with assembly programming (yes, not programming in general, assembly), this book may require some slow reading to get the details. I am fine with this, because, again, understanding how the NES worked is crucial to understanding how NES games were made and what they did. However, it does mean that this book is not quite the page turner that Racing the Beam is.

The book, like "Racing the Beam" goes into some detail about how the hardware was pushed, putting a lot of words into the Famicom Disk System, mappers, and other enhancements. Pretty interesting stuff, especially as an American who never laid eyes on a FDS. Towards the end, Altice goes into details on the NES in modern contexts, including chiptunes, emulation, speedruns, and so forth. It's here I think he loses the plot a bit. I understand what he is doing - trying to place the NES into cultural terms today - but quite frankly I do not think it works. The audio chapter in particular really bogs down, and it's a tough read. And while emulators are moderately interesting, the discussion on different types, development groups, etc. don't really do it for me. I think those pages would have been better used continuing to talk about the NES/Famicom as it was in the late 1980's. I'd rather read more about the people coding the games than people coding emulators 10 years later.

I was a child during the NES' heyday, so I thought this book also provided an opportunity to relive some nostalgia. Turns out, not so much, but that is okay. I think this is a good book for anyone who is interested in how old computing platforms were structured or anyone who is interested in a deeper dive on the system. Just be prepared to take it slow and absorb the details.

About the Author
Aristotle was born in 384BC. For twenty years he studied at Athens at the Academy of Plato, on whose death in 347 he left, and some time later became tutor to Alexander the Great. On Alexander's succession to the throne of Macedonia in 336, Aristotle returned to Athens and established his school and research institute, the Lyceum. After Alexander's death he was driven out of Athens and fled to Chalcis in Euboea where he died in 322. His writings profoundly affected the whole course of ancient and medieval philosophy. 

Hugh Lawson-Tancred was born in 1955 and educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford. He is a Departmental Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at Birkbeck College in the University of London. He has published extensively on Aristotle and Plato and is currently engaged in research in computational linguistics. He translates widely from the Slavonic and Scandinavian languages. He is married with a daughter and two sons and lives in North London and Somerset.

Not the slightest care taken

Well, here's how the KINDLE version, not necessarily the paper or other versions, reads at one point: "It was, of course, flagrantly at odds with any kind of Platonism, and so far as we can tell most philosophers tended to orientate themselves very clearly towards oneor otherofthese..." See the "oneor otherofthese" at the end? What does it mean, along with the other similar errors, some pointed out by other reviewers? That whoever is in charge of these books just couldn't care less, let the quality of the thing (on Kindle) just wander without control, not the slightest editorial review will be exercised, not the lightest spell check is allowed, presumably because somehow that gets in the way of, I guess, making money.

A Classic and Brutal read.

A classic book, that is absolutely brutal to read. As a philosophy major I read it for school. I read a lot of dense books and I cannot imagine anyone enjoying reading this book. It does have some classic ideas, like 'turtles all the way down,' prime mover stuff. It seems like a good translation though, with some extremely helpful introductions and explanations, so I'm giving it four stars.

Great translation: no introduction (because it doesn't need one); incredible "Analytic" glossary with the Greek, Latin, and multiple English uses of the word, marked in-text; and an overall nice vintage book that is all about the text of the Metaphysics w/ no gimmicks or nonsense fluff.
