About the Author

John E. Tilton is a Research Professor in the Division of Economics and Business and a University Professor Emeritus at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado, USA. He is also a Professor in the Department of Mining Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Cat�lica de Chile as well as a Resources for the Future University Fellow.

Juan Ignacio Guzm�n is Chief Executive Officer of GEM Ltda., an industrial engineering company that advises the mining industry in management and economics, and of BOAMINE SpA, provider of software solutions for the mining industry. I really enjoy Stellaluna and Pinduli, and thought this might be a good edition to my son's Spanish library. It's ok, but boy- it's looooong. He very quickly lost interest, and I had a hard time finishing it myself.

Should have stopped at the 3rd Edition

I had the displeasure of using this book for a graduate level course on Software Engineering. We did not use the web site or the online learning tools associated with the book. The professor did use the author's supplied slides.

Pros:
* Very nice UML diagrams.
* Might get recycled into toilet paper.

Cons:
* Very repetitive. I lost track of how many times a legacy system was defined. This made reading this book extremely boring.
* Despite the 2011 copyright date, the material is dated. Computers are still single core, smart phones aren't on the scene, and Sun still owns Java (cue Oracle lawyers).
* The back of the book claims it has been updated with new material on open source development. That new material consists of a few paragraphs on the legal issues of incorporating open source into a traditional project. There is nothing on developing software for open source.
* The power point slides that accompany the book have problems with the graphics starting about chapter 5. The image quality of the embedded diagrams takes a nose dive and the images are barely readable.
* The topics covered seemed very shallow. I'm not sure you'll get much more out of this book then you would reading through wikipedia articles.
* The author has a habit of using acronyms without defining them. COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) was used for several chapters before it was spelled out.
* Electronic version (Kindle) has random spaces removed (as noted by other reviewers)
* The project schedule charts presented are Gantt charts. It seems the author has never heard of Gantt and just refers to them as bar charts.
* Some diagrams are mislabeled.
* There was at least one sample XML file that was used for a few problems. The XML was broken making it that much harder to figure out the problems.

If you are a professor looking for a book on this topic, please spare your students and find another book.
If you want almost the whole book for free, download the slides. Chapter 4 alone is 82 slides (29 pages in the book).

The only thing I'd like to get out of this book (besides my money back) is how the diagrams were created. I haven't found anything that comes close to the ones in the book.

Why do you need this book, or not?

This book has such a poor rating in Amazon, and most of the reviewers feel the book lacks examples. It IS true.
However, I believe the author is NOT trying to provide the readers every detail about everything he is talking about. If I would teach a SWE course, the book would take me 2-4 semesters to cover. Just think about it, I can write a series of books talking about testing alone, about architecture alone, about XP in Agile alone, about......... This is not the book that give you the whole detail. However, why do so many professors choose this book as their textbooks(the 9th edition at least shows something)? Because it DOES provide a great overview about the key problems in SWE and most of the popular solutions to those problems. Also, it is the professor's discussion in the lectures and the labs that are more important to students who really wanna learn more about SWE. You MUST do projects, coding, putting those theories to practice to know that SWE really is. Even if the author put thousands of questions on the back of the book won't help you learn SWE.

My advice:
Get the big picture from the book, get the detail from the professors and other good resources. Learn what SWE really is through projects.

To those who wanna learn SWE by yourself:
ok......I have to say that is really tough. If you are in a company, you may don't have a lot of time, otherwise you may don't have project opportunity. As this book contains a lot of information while not that much details, it will drive you crazy sometime. So, this book only worth 2.5 stars for you :< the 2.5 stars are for you to grasp the big picture.

As the books author, I'd like to say a couple of things about some of the adverse comments here:

1. Repetition. Yes - there is repetition and this is not accidental. The book is not designed to be read cover to cover and it is not, in my view, good for the reader to expect them to simply refer them to somewhere else in the book when a concept is introduced.

2. Dullness - some aspects of software engineering are dull. I have always hated testing and I can think of no way of making software testing and quality management interesting. But they are still essential for professionals - this isn't supposed to be about entertainment. All professions have dull aspects to them and it would be a disservice to readers to pretend that this isn't the case.

I think I have to give a rating for this so, for fairness, I've rated it the average shown.

My only criticism is that occasionally Kerouac makes up words or used them oddly. The reader sometimes has to pause and figure out what he is trying to say. Otherwise, a great piece of nostalgia for Californians and those interested in the 50's and early 60's.

interesting story - not for every audience. Very 'hippy'. If that is your thing you'll dig. This book was once recommended to me as one of the primary books to read when you enter the corporate rat race. If you're struggling a bit with the notion of being glued to a strict work schedule and job responsibilities, read this one to open your mind to what the complete opposite side looks like.

About the Author
Dr. Clark is an independent research scientist. Dr. Clark has a Bachelor of Arts, Magna Cum Laude, and the Master of Arts with High Honors from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. Then she studied for two years at McGill University before attending the University of Minnesota and obtaining her doctorate degree in physiology in 1958. After doing government sponsored research for almost ten years at Indiana University, she began private consulting in nutrition in 1979. She continued her studies to earn a Naturopathy degree and an amateur radio license. The freedom to follow her most promising observations led to the breakthrough discoveries described in this book.

Believe her about parasites, but try food grade diatomaceous earth, as well.

When I first read this, I wondered if she was a bit of a nutty zealot. Now I think she is really right about much of what she says. I know she's right about parasites being much more prevalant than we think, because I found out that I have them, too! Now we know more about how toxoplasma gondii (from cats) can cause depression, schizophrenia, suicide, etc. Could this be why we all seem know a "crazy cat lady"? My apology's to cat lovers, but the two times in my life when I lived closely with cats who had access to hunting, I developed major depression with in the year. Only cats who hunt regularly are likely to pass this parasite on. I loved my cats, but not enough to be depressed. Now I only have dogs. I know Hulda encourages us to have no pets, but I'll take my chances with dogs.

I wonder why there is no mention of diatomateous earth. I have twice used the herbal parasite cleanse she recomends, and I thought I had good results, but I never saw any parasites. But recently I tried taking 2 Tablespoons daily of food-grade DE and after 10 days I passed lots of parasites. My approach now is do do both the herbal and the DE regularly. (Please make sure you juse only food grade DE. The sort used for pool filters is poisonous!)

Parasite formula works

I had tried Clarkia100 years before I ever read this book. It does work. I have so called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Myalgic Encephalomyelitus, a very complicated disease. I had diarrhea for 10 years from the initial viral onset of the illness.
No help from Doctors, they did not care. I happened to find a black walnut hulls product at a health food store. I used one bottle, did a pause in treatment for about a month then did another bottle. Total cost at the time overall a decade ago was only around $70.00.
It cured my chronic diarrhea!!! Amazing!! I did not find the book till about a decade later. Had no idea there was a book.
Her formula saved me so much misery. Our medical system is failing and harming us. The Clarkia 100 and New Action Products are the best I have tried so far. I do not sell or promote, it is personal use experience.

This is a must for anyone looking to detox the body naturally!

This book has a wealth of information and so many recipes for healthier options for home and health care. I'm currently doing the kidney cleanse in the book. It was quite involved to make the tea, but several days after drinking it the pain in my left bladder and kidney's went a way. I'm on my 2nd batch of tea and love having this book as a resource to heal things naturally.

I got the book while going through a parasite cleanse by my doctor and continuing to keep the buggers under control and detox my whole body. Our unhealthy choices and lack of knowledge on how to take care of ourselves get us all sick and lowered quality of life. If you are wanting to do what it takes to be healthy, then I suggest this book. Don't expect it to be easy or quick to heal as it took years to get sick.

During the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, 45 Helldivers ran out of fuel and were lost before they could return to their carriers. More modifications ensued and the more powerful SB2C-3 made its appearance, equipped with the R-2600-20 Twin Cyclone engine and a Curtiss four-blade propeller, in 1944. Helldivers helped sink the battleship Musashi in October 1944 and, in April 1945, sent the battleship Yamato to the bottom of the ocean the two heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever built. 194 photos, many in color, 80 pages.

There are so many hot stories in this book. I came across maybe two that I didn't like but the rest were great! I definitely recommend this to erotic book fans.

Sexy book earns its place on your nightstand or coffee table

Last night I attended a reading at Books Inc. for this book. It was a real treat to hear four of the authors read their stories out loud. I could feel the energy in the air as the sexual tension built with each reading. :)
I enjoyed this book immensely. Not only is it a gorgeous, luxurious book that would make a beautiful Valentine's, birthday or Christmas gift, but the content inside is rich, too. The stories feature a range of sexual situations from lesbian shoe worship, hot anonymous alley hook-ups, sex with a murderer on the run, to ritual spanking and circus love. While some of these scenarios may not be my particular fantasy, all are well-written, compelling and hot.

This would make a superb gift for both the erotica newbie and the person with a shelf full of sexy paperbacks who might enjoy a special treat.

Worth the price just for the feel of it -- gorgeously made, with its own classy deep red slipcover, definitely a keeper for the shelves. And just when you think there's nothing new and interesting happening in erotica, here's a great collection of 40 stories by the best authors around. Some funny, some hardcore, some softer, but all of them written in great style. I think I'll read this to my lover, one exquisite story at a time!
