Dr. Benjamin Wiker took his undergraduate degree in Political Philosophy from Furman University and holds a Ph.D. in Theological Ethics from Vanderbilt University. He is the author of nine books, including 10 Books That Screwed Up the World: And 5 Others That Didn t Help (Regnery Publishing, 2008). He is co-author with Scott Hahn of Answering the New Atheism: Dismantling Dawkins Case Against God (Emmaus Road, 2008) and co-author with Jonathan Witt of A Meaningful World: How the Arts and Sciences Reveal the Genius of Nature (IVP Academic, 2006). Professor Wiker is a Senior Fellow with Envoy Institute, St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, and Discovery Institute.

A Great Overview

As a non-science major and faithful - but also critically minded - Catholic (full disclosure), I would describe this book as a near "tour-de-force" layman's guide to the Church's relationship with science down through the ages. The book is very brief in relative terms (153 pages, including appendix and conclusion), but by no means does it lack in substance. And it's very readable.

Reaching as far back as the Jewish dismissal of superstition in the creation account of Genesis, Wiker addresses seven common "confusions" present in today's thinking: "The Catholic Church is at war with science", "The Middle Ages were a time of scientific darkness", "The Church persecuted Copernicus and Galileo for anti-science reasons", "The Church accepts Darwinism" or "The Church rejects Evolution", "The Big Bang is a scientific alternative to the notion of a Creator God", "The Origin of Life was an accident", and "Extraterrestrial life has to exist given the vastness of the universe."

Wiker convincingly demonstrates the actual truth regarding each of these claims, only rarely drawing a conclusion that did not seem (in my mind) to unequivocally follow upon a given premise. (This occasional perceived misstep is one reason I am giving the book 4 stars, rather than 5. The second reason is that it was so good, I found myself regretting that the book was about half as long as it is should have been. "Tell us more!!!" I found myself thinking when I reached the end.) Anyone that thinks that the Catholic Church and science are at odds will not only be forced to reconsider after reading this book, but will find themselves wondering why so many intelligent individuals today think that such a position is even possible in the first place.

A Reasoned Approach Re Catholicism and Science

Benjamin Wiker's book titled THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCIENCE: ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS AND EXPOSING THE MYTHS is a short but informative account of the History of the Catholic Church and scientific scholarship. Wiker was clear that many Catholic authorities carefully studied nature and the Cosmos in an attempt to understand the mystery of God's Creation and to make an intelligent responses to materialists and those who argued that Creation was achieved by random chance.

The introduction to this book dealt with Lucrecius (c.99-c.55 BC)and Epicurius (c. 341-c.270 BC)who argued that men are predestioned by material forces over which they have little or no control. Wiker compared these concepts with Calvin's (1509-1564)view of predestination which Catholic authorities ardently opposed. Wiker also demolished the false notion that Catholic authorities opposed science by citing the SECULAR historian J.L. HEIBRON who showed that Catholic dignataries lavished wealth on scientific research. The Vatican Observatory is such an example. During the early history of the Catholic Church, astronomical studies were crucial if only to get the correct dates of Lent, Easter, Advent, etc.

As readers may know, the early Christians were "radicals." To paraphrase G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936)men can easily have let an age to have its head but difficult to keep one's own head. Catholic authorities did not dictate science, and St. Augustine (354-430 AD) gave the Ancient Greeks credit for their work re science and mathematics.

A recent trend that Wiker noticed is that honest historicans have checked sources and documents which clearly show that Medieval Catholic scholars contributed much to scientific inquiry.Northhead (1861-1947)showed that modern science depended on Medieval Catholic scientific studies. The fact that astrology and horoscopes were and are in vogue is obvious, but Catholic scholars and authorities condemned such concepts including St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)and the Medieval Catholic Popes.

Another popular myth that Wiker exposed was the nonsensical view that during the "Dark Ages," Catholics thought the earth was flat. St. Jerome (346-420), St. Ambrose (347-397), etc. knew the earth was round and had studied the work of Erastothanes (276-196 BC)who demonstrated the earth was round. Early Catholics including Boethius (480-525)also knew that compared to the universe, the earth was infinately small. Pope Sylvester II (999-1003)was well aware that the earth was an orb.

Wiker provided a list of "Who's Who" re Medieval Cathholic Churchmen who contributed so much to scientific study. Wiker mentioned Robert Grosseteste (c.1170-1253)who accurately predicted tides, comets, the light spectrum of rainbows, etc. Father Roger Bacon (1214-1294)did original work re teleccopes and is considered by some historians as The Father of the Scientific Method. Father John Peckham (1230-1292)did original work in optics. Richard Wallingford (1282-1336) did complex celestial tables and improved the mechanical clock. One could write "a five foot book shelf" on other Catholic dignitaries and other Catholic Churchmen who did so much effective scientific research. Another aspect of Medieval university learning was that much of what was taught was mathematical.

Wiker gave a good account of the Catholic scholarship during Early Modern European History. Wiker among others debunked the myths that Copernicus (c.1473.1543)was persecuted but actually was encouraged to publish his heliocentric theory as a theory. Galileo (1564-1627)WAS NEVER imprisoned and NEVER tortured. He spent his brief "incarciration" either in Florentine Ambassador's residence or the Papal Palace where he had his own chef and wine tester. In fact, Pope Benedict XIV (1740-1758)gave his Impramatur to ALL of Galileo's work. Furthermore, Pope Paul V (1605-1621)arranged a special celebration for Galileo in 1610. Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644), the Pope during Galileo's arrest, honored Galileo in 1624. Galileo had trouble because he was a rude guest and ungrateful to anyone who helped him but who disagreed with with him.

Wiker's chapter on evolution and Darwinism clarified the Catholic Church's position re evolution. Wiker was clear that Catholic authorities DO accept evolution and c. 4 1/2 billion geological history of the earth. Catholic authorities also accept the c. 14 billion astronomical history of the universe. In fact, when Hubble (1889-1953) announced his Big Bang Theory in 1929 the Big Bang Theory implied a beginning of Creation. Father LeMaitre, S.J. (1894-1966), who was close friends with Einstein (1879-1955),produced a mathematical model of an expanding universe. What Catholics do reject in the random theory that men and women and life are a chance combination of elements and molecules. Wiker provided a clear analysis of how delecate the creation of conditions of life are and how complex life is which is well beyond any random theory. Wiker cited Cardinal Schonborn's book titled CREATION AND EVOLUTION as a source to examine the debate. Basically Catholic authorities accept evolution but reject Darwinian materialism and random selection. People are much more than their chemical composition. Bascially the Big Bang Theory implies a beginning or Creation which is reasoned conclusion. To deny scientific reality is to make a mockery of religion per St. Thomas Aquinas. The earth is galactical good real estate.

Wiker produced a chapter re ETs. With all the money and effort spent, there is not one shred of evidence of ETs in spite of the films and tv series which promote such a belief. The only thing space probes have show is silent static. Wiker provided the space and time impossibility of ETs. Speculations taken as truth have exited for hundreds of years without any proof whatsover of ETs.

Wiker gave a short reading last in his Conclusion which should help readers know more about biology, astronomy, chemistry/physic, etc. His book is not long, but Wiker has a knack of "making serveral points with an exceptional economy of words." Those who are not scholars can comprehend this book, and scholars can profitably examine Wiker's theses.

Great book - Recommended!

This is a great book. It gives the popular misconceptions and answers them. It's an easy to understand, well-reasoned treatment of the topic that backs itself up well and gives a lot of food for thought. I especially like how it dispels without question the long propagated myths, such as people in the Middle Ages believing in a "flat earth," - Galileo - evolution - and a whole lot more. Recommended!

This is doing the job for me.

I have used Amazon for many years and I have never written a review. I am just starting to listen to Meditation 15 of 30 in The Light of Pure Knowing, and I am compelled to write an interim five-star review. I have already bought two additional sets for friends and plan to buy more for friends and relatives.

This is what I have been looking for. A thorough guide to understanding this mystery of the (non)-structure of reality and how to possibly experience awakening into it. I am seventy years old and just recently realized that I might be able to discover my enlightenment in this lifetime (my wording is probably not correct).

After reading several books on the subject, this looks like the best shot at it for me. I have to add that The Most Direct Path to Eternal Bliss awakened in me the desire of pursuing enlightenment, and I still use that book as a background of my path. But Rupert Spira, by means of guided exercises, is walking me through the experiences of discovering the non-dual truth that, according to the awakened ones, has always been here.

Maybe I will update after listening to the remaining Meditations.

Infinite stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Wow, just wow. I echo what others have said & recommend this set whole heartedly. I've recently been "obsessed" with Nisargadatta (known for his book "I AM THAT" among others). However, I found that I longed to hear his words, rather than read them on a page. Reading seems to engage my linear mind more than I like. (I have many of Nisargadatta's books, as well as those of his predecessors & successors.) I did make audio tracks of some of Nisargadatta's works in my own voice, however this was time consuming, & effortful. Nisargadatta fueled my desire to dissolve my imaginary separate self & at the same time raised subtle questions within me. Enter Rupert Spira--master of addressing subtle questions with grace. I discovered Rupert's teachings on amazon. I've literally been listening to him nearly round the clock since (schedule permitting). This is effortlessly helping me internalize & crystallize a direct experience of non-duality. Thank you Rupert! You are a blessing & a treasure. I followed the suggestion of one reviewer & went to youtube to familiarize myself with Rupert's work. I was hooked from the first video. I've listened to (& bookmarked) dozens of his audio clips since then. I also downloaded a track called "Journey into Presence" on iTunes for $1.99 which I HIGHLY recommend. I continue to listen to it over & over again & it always helps dissipate/dissolve the imaginary separate self & bring waves of love & relief. Rupert & his teachings are an IMMENSE GIFT. The day I received these CD's I listened to the first one (3 hours) that night. Then I highlighted the words that helped me see things in a new way in the book which is included. Then I listened to "Journey into Presence" again & again. Then I listened to more of his youtube videos. (I highly recommend these. Current favorites include "Being aware of being aware," "Why are you so afraid of fear?" & "Don't discipline the attention" among many others). Do yourself a favor & check out his work. His message is saturating my cells, as I said, with waves of relief. I'm very thankful for the transformation he has catalyzed inside & out. I appreciate the feeling of holding his hand as I go deeper & deeper within. I suspect fear was a significant barrier for me & Rupert handles it with absolute grace. Going deeper within has also helped me bring/invite/integrate the Self into my outer life. What a miracle! The one side effect I notice is that the more I listen to his meditations, the more physical activity--yoga, running, walking, movement etc.--I require to "ground" the new insights. (Right now I'm waiting for the sun to come up so I can go for a run followed by yoga.) I've cognitively known that imperturbable peace exists. Rupert consistently helps me to find it inside. :-) That's no small gift. Thank you Rupert & all those who made these CD's & prolific audio clips available. I recommend his teachings highly to those with ears that can hear. Sincere gratitude & very best wishes!

Update: It's been just over a week & I continue to listen to these meditations often. Interestingly, Meditation #12 really struck a chord. I find myself listening to it over & over again. I must really need its message--it's essential. It reframed something huge for me--the difference between letting go mentally & letting go physically. I've studied & practiced numerous forms of bodywork over the years, however something about this particular meditation really clicked. I'm thirsty for its message all the time. I did venture forward at one point to Meditation #14. (I agree that it's helpful to listen to these order.) However, I still often return to Meditation #12. I suspect that #14 will be the next one I listen to repeatedly. I'm thrilled to listen with new ears each time. Enjoy!

2nd Update: #20 Every Breath Belongs to the Universe--sooooo good! The message is always fresh. Listen, dissolve, repeat :-) I am thankful every day for these!

3rd Update: I continue to be compelled by Meditation #20 (Every Breath Belongs to the Universe). I find myself listening to it at least 1-2 times a day, usually first thing in the morning & last thing at night. Its messages creates a profound shift in me & is immensely enjoyable. I suspect I've listened to it hundreds of times. (I sometimes listen to it on loop overnight and/or multiple times during the day, commuting etc.). I'm not yet even slightly compelled to move ahead to the next one. Yes, Rupert transmits "The Light of Pure Knowing." I've experienced flashes or glimpses of it over the years & this is like spotting the full-out dawn over the horizon. Moreover, I find myself applying it throughout the day. For example, during yoga, I notice that it's the Universe 'doing' the yoga & then asanas instantly deepen. I said to a friend, "Wouldn’t it be amazing to slip into the state of non-duality with eyes open while encountering the world [not just in close-eyed meditation]?" Rupert is lighting the way. Lately I like to augment Rupert's #20 with two of his free youtube videos: "Why are you so afraid of the fear?" & "why am I here?" I didn't realize that words (combined with tone, cadence, awareness, stillness) could be *so* transportive (& I love words... but not as much as going beyond them!) THANKS RUPERT & best wishes to all!

Update (July 2017): I cherish these meditations. Rupert's ability to convey/transmit insights is unparalleled (in my experience), & he's one of my most trusted teachers. Rupert has the ability to reach students at multiple levels (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual as well as at different levels of understanding)--right where we're at with the gleam of light right where it's needed most. The reason I decided to post this update is that as a student of spirituality for over 3 decades, my path has included a fair amount of the "spiritual buffet line" (i.e., dozens of different teachers/paths/disciplines). Although that was the path that I needed, I've also strongly desired a clearer more straightforward trajectory. Listening to Rupert's meditation #24 this morning helped me realize that what I've been seeking is here--& now I can realize & appreciate it. I tend to listen to Rupert's meditations over & over. They go deep deep deep. THANK YOU RUPERT! Dozens of teachings over the years have now distilled themselves into 2--Rupert's teachings & one other complementary path. Something's shifted. The title "The Light of Pure Knowing" says it all. Sincere gratitude & very best wishes.

Nothing to compare this to...

Like many other people who’ve been pursuing an understanding of Advaita or Non-duality, I’ve collected a wide range of videos and books on the subject. Out of all the information I own, this collection of 30 meditations and contemplation's have taken me deeper into a comprehensive understanding of Self, than all the other information combined. The main difference being that it’s been fully experiential. I wouldn’t have believed it possible, if I hadn’t experienced it myself.

This isn’t to say for a minute that the writings of other gifted and self aware writers didn’t contribute greatly to my overall understanding, just that the way Rupert has set up these meditation/contemplation's, and the fact that each one allows you to truly Experience what he’s saying, makes all the difference in the world.

As you listen to Rupert speak, you actually experience what he’s talking about. Each section takes you deeper into what slowly becomes a profound awakening. There isn’t anything I can think of that would compare to what can be found here, if you’re ready.

Just a word of advice. Resist the urge to skip or jump around through the meditations. Do all of them and do them in the order they are provided. They build on each other like a beautiful poem or orchestral movement. Lastly, don’t be put off by the word meditation. These don't require much more effort than just closing your eyes and listening to them.

Excelent book for beginners &/or runners with foot problems.

The most comprehensive book in terms of foot related injuries & pain. Problems are discussed & practical solutions are offered.
Unfortunately, it recommends full sit-ups vs back-friendly crunches & it doesn't sufficiently address iliotibial band syndrome - a very common problem for runners.

Not just for experienced runners

The first chapter of the book, "I tried running once and didn't like it", was inspiring. I am 40 years old and new to running; this book helped me learn how to start running and keep running without serious injury. It doesn't tell you that you need to acquire expensive gear to start, just start slow and easy. It tells you when you do need to get good shoes and provides solid advice on what type and how to buy shows. I have hard to fit feet and the book provides useful and detailed information on how to adjust the fit of running shoes. This book does not provide training programs, but instead helps with treating everything from minor aches to major injuries.

A book everyone should read

The story of the Irish enslavement by the British in the 17th and 18th centuries is omitted by most history books, or else presented as a pleasant "work for travel cost" indentured-servant program. This book gives a raw picture of the reality experienced by the tens of thousands of Irish slaves who were taken to the West Indies through the voice of woman in her forced testimony just before she is executed. The slave masters' creation of "black" African slaves versus "white" Irish slaves was started at this time in order to divide their joint efforts in rebellion. In all of my years of studying history, I never learned this story until I read McCafferty's book. It has motivated me to research further into this hidden human genocide. This well-written story places the reader in the time where life was very cheap and justice very rare.

While the story is fiction, the historical facts are not. So many people overlook the enslavement of the Irish in the Caribbean, where the template for slavery in the Colonies was formed. I had no idea that the "Free Blacks", at first, were the offspring of the African man and the Irish woman in attempts to make a hardier slave. A superior slave, so to speak. It's not a pretty story, but what is when you have a ruling class with no regard for the people who make their luxurious lives possible--similar to life in the USA today. I've read the book twice and recommend it highly.

About the Author
Ted Andrews (1952-2009) was an award-winning author and deeply respected teacher in the metaphysical and spiritual fields. Through his seminars, symposiums, workshops, and lectures, he was committed to making esoteric material comprehensible and practical for everyone. Ted Andrew's many gifts included clairvoyancy, aura interpretation, past-life analysis, dreams interpretation, numerology, and Tarot. He wrote many books on these subjects, but is best known for his work with animal mysticism and for his bestselling Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small. Certified in basic hypnosis and acupressure, Andrews was also involved in the study and use of herbs as an alternative path in health care, focusing strongly on esoteric forms of healing with sound, music, and voice. In addition to his interest in metaphysics, Ted was a trained pianist and often used the Celtic harp, bamboo flute, shaman rattles, Tibetan bells, Tibetan Singing Bowl, and quartz crystal bowls to create individual healing therapies and induce higher states of consciousness. Action packed thriller that keeps you turning pages

I found this book very entertaining. I am a huge Vince Flynn fan and a 33 year police veteran. I enjoyed the action and highly recommend it for fans of political thrillers and intrigue. If I have one issue, and it is admittedly a small one, I think Mr. Maloney could use a firearms consultant. There seems to be some confusion about semi automatic, burst fire, weapon selection for specific missions, etc. Again, a small issue, but one that as a 24 year firearms instructor and gun enthusiast I find distracting. OVERALL though, a fun read from a good author that I highly recommend!

A truly realistic and engaging thriller

Say what you want about special ops books - a great many of them show the hero in shining glory, fending off bullets with ease, getting the girl. And riding off into the sunset.

Not this one. While Leo Maloney's hero (Dan Morgan) never lacks for courage, he doesn't always win the day. He's subject to the math of superior numbers at times, is susceptible to injury, and is given to frustration, just as the reader is when a scene doesn't go the way it rightfully should.

I appreciate that about this novel. Morgan and company's struggles feel realistic and jarring. It's what keeps the reader turning the page and showing up late for real life appointments.

The other cool note about this book is that it can be read as a standalone novel. You don't need to worry about how it fits into the chronology of the other Dan Morgan adventures. Although I'm certain that after reading this one, you'll want to read the others too.

A treasure!

Viscoelastic properties of polymers includes a very detailed description of polymer rheology, covering both the mechanical aspects of rheometers, as well as the description of molecular basis of viscoelasticity. The book is highly recommended to everyone embarking on a career in polymer viscoelasticity. Ferry has essentially compiled all the important material relevant to polymer viscoelasticity, and hence the chapters serve as excellent reviews of respective fields. Since the last edition is well over 20 years old, many recent aspects of viscoelaticity are not present in the book (quite understandable:))! Nevertheless, this book is a must have to delve into viscoelaticity, the knowledge and its evolution.

This book is one of the best book on Polymer Viscoelasticity. Not a basic read, but a more advanced version. Although the last/latest edition is over 30 years old, this Ferry book is a great compilation of practical data, theory and advanced explanations. Love it...

About the Author
Stephen Cope is the Senior Scholar in Residence at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He is a Western-trained psychotherapist who writes and teaches about the relationship between Western psychological paradigms and the Eastern contemplative traditions, and the best-selling author of such books as The Great Work of Your Life and Yoga and the Quest for the True Self.
Stephen holds degrees from Amherst College and Boston College. He completed graduate and postgraduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the Boston area, where he practiced for many years before joining the staff at Kripalu. In its 25th anniversary edition, Yoga Journal named him one of the most important innovators in the developing field of American yoga. He lives in Albany, New York, and Key West, Florida.

"Soul Friends" is a treasure.

"Soul Friends" is a treasure, one of those books I'm going to reread several times and understand differently as I grow.

I'll confess--when I started reading, I dug in, and read it completely out of order. I disobeyed Stephen Cope's instructions to do tasks, make lists, and take action--I skipped around from beginning to end, "Oh, that's me!"

Finally, I sat down, stopped skipping around, and really read. Wow. If Stephen Cope's "The Great Work of Your Life" challenged me to think about my dharma--my truth--and things I was avoiding, this book is asking me to dig even deeper to see how relationships--and lack thereof--have helped or hindered me on my path.

"Soul Friends" discusses the six types of relationships we have in our lives, that we must have in order to thrive.

Some are lifelong friendships that keep us honest, mirroring our deepest thoughts and feelings. Others, intense but fleeting connections that become catalysts for major life changes. Some of these deep connections are with people we haven't even met. Each tells us something about ourselves--things we knew, or things we struggle to face. Stephen asks us to feel blessed by soul friends, and to recognize missing areas, because we cannot grow without all six.

As I read, I immediately recognized these people in my life. Stephen asked me to write them down. I froze. He knew why. "Don't write who you think should be on the list," he said. He wanted me to write the people who really are.

The truth is where most of us get stuck. Stephen Cope knows this--his parables have a gentle way of helping me work through the truth when I struggle. His writing and teaching is brilliant for that reason.

Stephen Cope's works never let me off the hook. I feel like I'm sitting for coffee and deep conversation, that he really knows where I'm stuck. "Soul Friends" won't go on the "reread" shelf. This book will stay with me.

A Beautiful and Profound Reflection on Soul Friends!

Stephen Cope has written this extraordinary psychologically rich reflection on deep human beauty in friendship. As someone who has been hungry for understanding intimate cross-sex or opposite sex friendships, I have devoured books from therapists over the last fifteen years. I have also paid close attention to how therapeutic relationships with acknowledged power differentials might shed light on mutual and equal friendships.

What I love about this book is that Cope beautifully escapes psychological-spiritual reduction of human beauty in friendship. Instead, he highlights what I would call this mysterious beauty in friendship that defies such reductionism.

I have read many books on spiritual friendship, soul friendship, deep friendship throughout the years from all kinds of different spiritual, religious, sociological, and psychological traditions. I would easily put this in one of the three best books I have ever read on deep human connection in friendship.

Stephen Cope is one of my favorite authors. I ve read every one of his books over and over again. And his new book does not disappoint. In fact, I think it's his best yet.
Soul Friends has opened my eyes to the enormous role that friendship (and relationships of all kinds)can play in living an optimal life. As always, it s Stephen's combination of story-telling(often hilarious) and scholarship that makes the book so readable. As another reviewer has said, he seems to find just the right balance between stories and exposition It makes reading a real delight. And of course, I think most of us will identify with his stories in some way.
Also, as in Stephen 's last book, The Great Work of Your Life, he interweaves stories here of friendships between great historical characters (Freud, Darwin,Eleanor Roosevelt, Queen Victoria, Henry David Thoreau) and these stories just help to illuminate in fascinating ways the principles he is writing about.
This book is one, like all his books, which I will read over and over again, always enjoying and learning something new. Thanks, Stephen, for your latest gift to your loyal readers!!
