The Luminaries (Man Booker Prize), by Eleanor Catton

The bestselling, Man Booker Prize-winning novel hailed as "a true achievement. Catton has built a lively parody of a 19th-century novel, and in so doing created a novel for the 21st, something utterly new. The pages fly."--New York Times Book Review

It is 1866, and Walter Moody has come to stake his claim in New Zealand's booming gold rush. On the stormy night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of 12 local men who have met in secret to discuss a series of unexplained events: a wealthy man has vanished, a prostitute has tried to end her life, and an enormous cache of gold has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely ornate as the night sky.

Richly evoking a mid-nineteenth-century world of shipping, banking, and gold rush boom and bust, THE LUMINARIES is at once a fiendishly clever ghost story, a gripping page-turner, and a thrilling novelistic achievement. It richly confirms that Eleanor Catton is one of the brightest stars in the international literary firmament.

A Commitment - Not For Everyone
By Mary Lins
Gushing reviews are easy to write, (so are pans), but what to say when you know that a book is well written, innovatively and creatively structured, and is destined to be loved by many, but it just didn't appeal to you? "The Luminaries" by Eleanor Catton, is such a book. Short-listed for the Booker Prize, this novel, that weighs in at over 800 pages, takes a bit of a commitment to get into and, once invested, it must "grab" you to continue. I got half-way through and then had to have a "talk with myself" about continuing. It just isn't my kind of novel and continuing was going to take too much of my precious reading time. Yet, I was far enough in to see that its innovative style of folding back in on itself will appeal to many readers. It's like a complicated pastry; the plot is kneaded and folded to produce the confection intended. This is not a novel for readers who like their plots to be linear.

Catton's writing style is beautifully lush and vividly descriptive. Her descriptions of the myriad characters are wonderfully rendered both in the descriptions of their physical selves and of their inner selves. Catton also creates a unique and interesting setting of a New Zealand gold mining town in the mid-nineteenth century.

I'm posting this candidly honest review to help other readers ascertain if they are the type of reader who will enjoy this unique novel, or not.

A brilliant historical novel that could win this year's Booker Prize
By Darryl R. Morris
This astonishing historical novel opens in Hokitika, New Zealand in 1866, a gold mining town along the West Coast of the South Island. Founded two years previously, Hokitika is in the midst of a population boom, as prospectors, hoteliers and other businessmen have flocked there after news of its vast riches and promise of easy wealth has reached people living within and outside of New Zealand. One of those men is Walter Moody, a young Englishman who is trained in law but seeks gold to provide him with material comfort and the start of a new life. He arrives in town after a harrowing and emotionally distressing voyage at sea, and after he checks in at a local hotel he proceeds to its smoking room, where he hopes to unwind with a pipe and a stiff drink. Upon his arrival he notices that 12 men are already there, who appear to be from different backgrounds but also seem to have gathered in secret for a particular reason. The atmosphere in the room is tense and troubled upon his entry, but in his agitated state Moody doesn't sense that he has disturbed them. He is approached by one of the men, while the others appear to direct their attention toward their conversation, and after slowly gaining their confidence the men begin to share their intertwined stories with Moody, and the reason for their confidential meeting.

The story is centered around several mysterious and apparently interconnected occurrences that took place two weeks previously on a single night, including the death of a hermit in a shack overlooking town, the disappearance of a young man who has struck it rich in a gold mine, and the apparent near suicide of the town's most alluring prostitute. Every man in the room claims to be innocent of any direct involvement, yet they all appear to share some responsibility in the events that led up to these crimes, and each one fears that he may be accused and held accountable.

The reader learns more about these 12 men, Moody, and several other key players, as the story takes on a more defined shape. However, just as it seems to become more clear new twists arise and relationships emerge between previously unconnected characters, which made the tale more compelling and delightfully puzzling. I exclaimed out loud numerous times at various points ("Wait, what?" "Whoa!", etc.), and except for one relatively dead spot near the novel's midway point I was captivated from the first page to the last.

No review could adequately convey the intricacy and complexity of this novel, along with its numerous subplots and themes, and Catton's ability to maintain its momentum through 832 pages was akin to a performer riding a fast moving rollercoaster while juggling various objects of different sizes for hours on end. My biggest critique is its ending, which felt rushed and overly tidy, and despite its length I would have preferred for it to have been extended by another 50-100 pages.

"The Luminaries" is a masterful literary symphony, and a work of historical fiction that compares favorably with similarly superb novels such as The Children's Book, The Stranger's Child and The Glass Room. There are few books of this size that I would love to start reading again immediately after finishing it, but this is one of them, and young Ms Catton is to commended for a brilliant novel that should be a strong contender for this year's Booker Prize.

As if written by a Victorian David Mitchell - Catton strikes gold of her own
By Ripple
Eleanor Catton's "The Luminaries" is set in the New Zealand gold rush of the late 1860s. It's a story about greed, power, gold, dreams, opium, secrets, betrayal and identity, but most of all, it's a celebration of the art of story telling, both in terms of Catton's book and the stories her characters have to tell. It's the kind of book that is perfect escapism and which wraps you up in its world. If you like big, chunky books that you can get lost in for hours, then this is one for you.

Second novels are notoriously tricky, especially when they follow one that has received the critical acclaim that Catton had for her debut, "The Rehearsal". Fortunately, no one seems to have told Catton this and "The Luminaries" is a very different style of book but one that is an even more remarkable and memorable achievement. Also notable is Catton's writing style. This was the standout feature of her debut novel and this is equally stylish but in a very different way. There are hints and nods to some great writers both period and more modern throughout, notably a touch of Charles Dickens, a splash of Wilkie Collins, a smidgeon of Robert Louis Stevenson, a dash of Salman Rushdie and a hint of David Mitchell, yet all combined in a freshness that is uniquely Catton's. It's more homage than a plagiarism of style. The one element that is common to both this and "The Rehearsal" is what comes over as the author's sheer love of story telling - there's a constant sense of fun in her descriptions and she writes as if she has a smile on her face and is as entranced by the story that is being set down as her readers are.

The opening scene accounts for the first 300 pages as the story is introduced from different perspectives, but essentially Walter Moody arrives in the small gold rush town of Hokitika and settles into one of the more basic hotels only to find that he has interrupted a clandestine meeting of twelve very different people who are all in some way linked to the death of a local hermit, the apparent suicide attempt by the local "lady of the old profession" as the judge will later term her and the disappearance of a young, successful and very rich prospector on one eventful night.

The webs of relationships between these twelve men and the victims are complex and at first take a bit of concentration but Catton is alert to this and offers frequent summaries and in particular a rather fuller prcis towards the end of this first part to make sure that the reader has picked up on all the salient relationships. The web of intrigue is part of the joy of the book and some you won't fully discover until much later on.

The book then jumps forward a month for a couple of parts before moving back to the past. The past chapters are much, much briefer and this change of style is one that you will either love or hate I suspect. It's one of the more modern touches to what otherwise feels like a very traditional narrative voice.

Although I absolutely loved the book, this was despite two aspects that might prove more of an obstacle for other readers. Firstly, while Catton's descriptions of people's characters are an absolute joy, she is guilty of telling the reader rather than showing. In many ways this is unavoidable with the size of her cast and this is very much an ensemble piece so to show each character trait would be challenging and slow the plot down.

The other aspect that failed to really gel with me is the astrological framework of the book which frames each part. Catton explains that she is more interested in this as a device for exploring character traits rather than any form of belief in determinism, but the device is so subtle that the reader is largely unaware of the relevance. I can see the use of the framework to the writer but I'm less convinced about the need to make this element so explicit, but that's down to my own personal taste.

The quality of the Booker long list seems to have become more erratic in recent years, but "The Luminaries" would not look out of place on the short list of even the vintage years. Definitely recommended. (I still think Harvest will win though).

Interesting and Varied Selection of Shifter Stories
By Mary Clark
Review for The Alphas Surrogate by Angela Foxxe – 5-Stars
I absolutely loved this book. It is very well written and the author has added so much to the story that the title doesn’t do it justice. Richard has lost many of his pack members because of fighting and, more importantly, the blight which has rendered the females infertile. Fate brings into his life Reign, but she is a human, and there are those who do not want her to live. A strong pack bond helps in times of trouble and Reign’s exceptional strong will, determination and spirit for the man she loves knows no bounds. The author has put together an extremely fascinating and thrilling story, not only of love, but of magic and the ways of the Fade. If you are interested in reading shifter books, this is one that should not be missed.

Review for Legend Of The Highland Wolves by Bonnie Burrows – 5 Stars
This was a very fascinating and well written story, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Anella is a free spirit, and when she meets an injured Roan, she is not only intrigued by him, but desires him. The Kingdom is in danger from an unknown enemy, and Roan has promised to protect Anella at all costs. A plan to lure the enemy away backfires, forcing Roan to fight and take control. The author has put together a book full of action, suspense and romance, which will keep the reader enthralled.

Review of The Alphas Mail Order Mate by Jade White – 4-Stars
This is quite an intricate story involving werewolves and their desire to increase their numbers, all the while keeping the human population ignorant of their existence initially. With outside werewolves’ help a colony is established, but hidden in the trees away from view; in addition a resort is built on the ground, catering to humans sympathetic to werewolves. When Chastity, a wolf-born, mates with Night, the Alpha, there is both jealousy and betrayal. The story evolves over a period of years, and shows the enhancements and development of both the werewolves and their colony, culminating in their eventual integration with humans when their identity and location is revealed. The book is quite detailed as regards the setting up of the tree houses, the love between Chastity and Night and the other pack members, the subsequent children they bear, and finally the relationships their own children have with their intended mates. Overall an interesting scenario.

Review for The Wolf's Forbidden Baby by Ellie Valentina – 4-Stars
An interesting story that I enjoyed reading. Devan has been a lone werewolf for five years, and has not shifted, but his animal hates being alone and is craving a pack. Suspicion is always at the back of Devan’s mind – would his pack ever send someone after him? Warrick’s ways were not his, and never would be. Wanting someone to talk to at the bar, Devan is mesmerised by Kyla, a werecoyote. With a life dictated by the iron rule of her father, all she wants is one night free of responsibility. Unfortunately, Kyla gets more than she bargains for when she tells Devan she is ready for anything he can offer. The death of his sister leaves Devan wanting revenge, but first he needs a pack; their loyalty abounds when an attack is launched simultaneously by both Kyla’s father and Warrick on the same night, threatening Kyla. The chemistry between Kyla and Devan is well-written, as is Devan’s protection of Kyla and the interaction between the various pack members.

Review for Fated To The Alpha by Jasmine White – 5-Stars
This was an extremely well constructed shifter story that I enjoyed immensely. Evelyn is promised to her Alpha, but is in love with Jeremy, a member of a rival enemy pack. Each pack has been told horror stories about each other for years, and it is this myth that Evelyn and Jeremy set out to allay. But nothing is easy, and their efforts to bring the packs together causes untold difficulties, such as their banishment and Evelyn’s subsequent capture and captivity when she is branded a traitor by her pack – but there are also allies fighting her corner. When Evelyn announces she is pregnant it is hoped this will be the catalyst needed to bring the packs together; to this end her children learn from an early age not to fight, and the reason why. I would have no hesitation in recommending this story, as it was well written and there was plenty of detail to keep the reader interested.

Review for The Island Of Alphas by Amira Rain – 4-Stars
This is a well created story about a Doctor who is given an unusual job offer to help solve fertility problems on a private Island. When approached, Liz doesn’t know what she is letting herself in for, but knows it cannot be worse than the situation she is currently in; no fianc, a serious debt problem and unemployed. On arrival at the Island, things are not quite what they seem; where is the airstrip they arrived on, what is a wolf, dragon, supernatural bears and Gray Forms doing on the Island, what can she do about the fertility problems and why is she overly attracted to two men. When Eric and Nate are continually distracted by outside influences, Liz is confronted by her ex-lover, Jason, but is it really him? When plans do not go to schedule, Liz finds herself in danger. I enjoyed the plot the author has written and found it to be a reasonably good shifter story.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Absolutely Amazing Alpha Wolf Anthology
By Wanda M.
I received an eARC in exchange for an hones review. I loved this anthology. I enjoyed every single story. Instead of writing a seperate review for each story, I will tell you that each author in this anthology is a wonderful and compelling writer.

Each story will captivate you and you will not be able to put the book down from page one all the way to the very last page. These authors have written a story that you will find with big, strong, sexy alpha males and each story will have romance, humor, danger, hot hot hot mating and each one will have a fantastic HEA.

I highly recommend this book, these stories, and these authors, to everyone who loves paranormal romances. I know you will love them as much as I did. Be sure to pick up a copy you will be very very glad that you did.

Great Collection of Shifter Romances
By L. Levine
This is a good collection of stories about shifters. I read most of them when they were originally released. I like these kinds of sets for discovering new authors. Each story is a complete story without a cliffhanger which is great too. I am going to mention a few that really resonated with me.

The Alphas Unwanted Mate – Ellie Valentina

An interesting story of a woman unsure of what it means to be matched to a shifter and has serious concerns about the role her mother plays in matching young women with their mates.

The Alpha's Surrogate – Angela Foxxe

This is a story about an alpha desperate for a mate to continue his clan. The characters are not that attractive based on their motivations for their behavior but it is an interesting story with quite a few twists.

The Next Alpha – Jasmine White

The woman does not realize she is being matched with a shifter but finds out quickly that she is entering a whole new world. The challenges for him to become alpha make for a very interesting story.

Chained To The Alpha – JJ Jones

Is a mystery about two people who wake up chained together with no memory of how it happened. They have to find out what happened to save themselves. It is a new idea for a story and one with great potential.

The Island Of Alphas – Amira Rain

Another store about fertility issues for shifters featuring a scientist who is eager to solve the mystery. There is a mythical aspect to the story I enjoyed very much.

I received a copy in return for a honest review.

Great Book!! Get it ASAP!!

This book is mind blowing!! What can I say... buy it, read it, and read it again!! (As soon as possible if you haven't read it.)

This book and most of the rest of Abraham-Hicks information will lead you to the promise land..the land where you can create whatever life you want. There is very good information in here concerning all parts of life from children to adult relationships. Mine came with a CD that also hada transcript of a live workshop.

The contents of book are like this:
Your vortex (Learning to Attract Joyous Co-creators)
Mating: The perfect mate, getting one, being one, attracting one.)
Sexuality and Sensuality and opinions of others
Parenting (Creating Positive parent child relationships)
Self-appreciation (The magic key to your vortex)
and the last part is a transcript of a workshop which is also on CD included with the book)

I have seen some weird stuff in my life since reading this book like just this morning, information I need showed up on my phone as a picture. I was searching Google images for a picture of codes for a certain remote control last night but I couldn't find one that had 4 digits in the code. The pictures all showed only 3 codes. So I cleared my phone and went to bed. Then this morning it was there. It isn't in my photos on my phone or any other folder with pictures and it was not yet uploaded to Google drive so I don't know where it came from. What does this have to do with this book? Just that, we absorb information when we read a book and perhaps that had an effect and I may have unconsciously created what we needed... I don't know. I just know that this book gives you the keys to your own kingdom by explaining what you need to do to get into the Vortex, which is where you create from.

Definitely recommended reading!!

This book is broken down in a very simple way and it's very easy to grasp. I never thought I'd find peace at my workplace until I learned how to get into The Vortex! I realized that I was the one creating all the turmoil that invaded my being when involving myself with complicated co-workers. By understanding the Law of Attraction and how we get what we get, I was able to become an 'Allower' and ALL turned out well for me at my job. The Vortex helped me find a place of centeredness & peace in my environment &I will always be grateful for Abraham! #TheLawOfAttraction #AbrahamHicks

Approaching Oblivion, by Harlan Ellison

Over the course of his legendary career, Harlan Ellison has defied—and sometimes defined—modern fantasy literature, all while refusing to allow any genre to claim him. A Grand Master of the Science Fiction Writers of America, winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Horror Writers Association, as well as winner of countless awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, Edgar, and Bram Stoker, Ellison is as unpredictable as he is unique, irrepressible as he is infuriating.Over thirty titles in Ellison’s brilliant catalog are now available in an elegant new package featuring Ellison himself. Genius never felt so combustible. The New York Times called him “relentlessly honest” and then used him as the subject of its famous Sunday Acrostic. People said there was no one like him, then cursed him for preventing easy sleep. But in these stories, Harlan Ellison outdoes himself, rampaging like a mad thing through love (“Cold Friend,” “Kiss of Fire,” “Paulie Charmed the Sleeping Woman”), hate (“Knox,” “Silent in Gehenna”), sex (“Catman,” “Erotophobia”), lost childhood (“One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty”), and into such bizarre subjects as the problems of blue‑skinned, eleven‑armed Yiddish aliens, what it is like to witness the end of the world, and what happens on the day the planet Earth swallows Barbra Streisand. Oh yeah, this one is a doozy!

THANKFULLY IT'S SMALL
By EMAN NEP
Having read lots of Harlan Ellison's collections, I can honestly say that this one is not one of his best. You won't find any Hugo-award winners in here, folks. Of course, I've read LOTS of Harlan stories that DIDN'T win awards and were absolutely WONDERFUL. There is one such story in this collection that comes to mind--Erotophobia. Remember the opening scene of Austin Powers? Where he's being chased by all these women. That's the basic idea for that story. Absolutely hilarious. As for the rest of the stories in this book, I didn't find any that were Harlan at his worst. Even the story Catman, the longest and least enjoyable of the bunch had a little something to it. I wouldn't recommend that first time Harlan-readers start here, though. But for those of us that have read our Harlan, this is definitely worth getting.

Nice collection by the SF short story master
By Mithridates VI of Pontus
Ellison's stories punch where it hurts. Approaching Oblivion (1974) is filled with transfixing tales about violent future racism ("Knox"), humanity's last moments ("Kiss of Fire"), the desperate desire to change one's own past ("One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty"), a last rebel against the militarizing system ("Silent in Gehanna"), and familial rivalry within a vast arcology ("Catman"), etc...

They are terrifying and vicious, immersive and gut-wrenching, and span from baroque far future speculations to near future warnings. Above all, they are well-written and intelligent. Many are infused with (pseudo) autobiographical content and lament the societal ills that Ellison sees as most pervasive and dangerous and most of the time he believes it's futile to do anything about it.

Warning: I suspect some readers will find the nihilistic and caustic tone of the volume tedious. Ellison proclaims at the end of his introduction: "This is what tomorrow looks like, dummy" (16). And he can't resist taking a swipe at the reader (and the American public in general), "if you hear me sobbing once in a while, it's only because you've killed me, too, you f[*****]" (16).

But the sobs are beautiful...

...and I need more of his collections.

For fans of New Wave SF and vitriolic social SF.

Brief Plot Summary/Analysis

"Knox" (1974) 5/5 (Very Good): The collection starts off with a mordant and literary story of a dystopic future plagued by racism -- a future (perhaps) where the Patriotism Party holds great allure. The work is particularly hard-hitting due to the fact that similar white supremacist groups exist today. Knox rises through the ranks of the Patriotism Party by engaging in hate crimes, memorizing long lists of racial epithets, and practicing at the shooting range. Ellison masterfully pairs Knox's growing hatred of minorities (and the events after his first kill) with the slow disintegration of his family (especially his love for his wife). Although `Knox' is a product of Ellison's day, these issues have in no way disappeared. A terrifying read...

"Cold Friend" (1973) 4.25/5 (Good): A vaguely SF story (speculative might be the better term) of man who dies of cancer yet spontaneously resurrects (or so he thinks). But when he awakes in the hospital he discovers the world has changed.... The people are gone, his town is the world, the food in the stores are always stocked and spoil, and strange effect that violate gravity occur at the edge of his world. Soon he is beset by barbarians that rush down the deserted streets which he fights off with paperbacks -- and he sees a girl in semi-translucent white dress who seems to have unusual power over the nature of his world.

"Kiss of Fire" (1973) 4.25/5 (Good): A fantastic vision of a decadent and baroque far future.... In a vast space vessel that gathers the memories of the inhabitants of recently destroyed planets, Redditch, who programs their deaths -- wanders the halls in a veritable malaise. This is a future where everyone has become bored with their near endless existence -- the only thing that titillates and evokes emotion is death. Ellison pulls an intriguing trick that might put off some readers -- the language, despite its incredibly flowery nature ("He drank ice crystals laced with midnight and watched their world burn"), feels oddly empty... Perhaps this references the vast array of stimuli the characters experience but remain unstimulated by. Whether this was his intention or not -- the language might simply be overkill -- the effect combined with the plot is rather disturbing.

"Paulie Charmed the Sleeping Woman" (1962) 3/5 (Average) does not contain speculative elements... Paulie played jazz and Ginny loved to listen night after night. And when Ginny dies Paulie gets depressed and wants to play at her grave. A simple tale told with some jazz-like verve...

"I'm Looking for Kadak" (1974) 4/5 (Good): I suspect that if I were Jewish (as Ellison is) I would understand more of this highly original story. Ten Jewish aliens remain on the planet Zsouchmuhn.... and one of them dies. Unfortunately, ten are needed to perform a sacred death ceremony. These aliens have many limbs and their souls speak long after they are dead... The dead alien's soul tells the remaining Jews that they need to track down Kadak in order to complete the ceremony. One of the aliens sets out to find Kadak and discovers all the bizarre cults and religions Kadak once adhered to.

I would suggest that Ellison is commenting on the power of religious tradition -- despite the far future setting and alien adherents, many of the Jewish traditions have remained intact. The story is filled with fun observations on tradition and religion, unusual rituals, and strange societies but is not for the fainthearted -- many of the key Jewish concepts are conveyed via Yiddish phrases and Ellison's accompanying index is necessary to understand what is happening.

"Silent in Gehenna" (1971) 4.5/5 (Very Good): Joe Bob Hickney is the last voice against the militarization of society: "You call this academic freedom, you bunch of earthworms! You call electrified fences and armed guards in your classrooms the path to learning?" (76). He's the last rebel. Everyone else has succumbed. Joe demonstrates on a University campus but no one listens. Soon he is kidnapped and awakes far from the University -- those who tends his wounds are other outcasts but utterly apathetic to the problems of the world. The apathy of everyone around him is devastating...

"Erotophobia" (1971) 3/5 (Average): An incredibly comic story in which Ellison ridicules one of the most prevalent cliches of the SF and F genre -- the irresistible male hero whom all the young women run after... If Nate Kleisher ventures outside of his home he will literally be "loved to death." Everyone, male or female, finds him attractive and go to great extremes to get at him. Afraid for his life Nate seeks out a renowned German shrink.... A fun satirical tale with a bizarre conclusion.

"One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty" (1970) 4/5 (Good): A profoundly moving story of Gus Rosenthal -- a foil for Ellison -- who travels back in time and befriends his younger self. His younger self was ridiculed for being a Jew and ran away from home at a young age. Filled with autobiographical tidbits from Ellison's own life, the work is filled with interwoven strands of nostalgia and longing to improve one's own past.

"Ecowareness" (1974) 3/5 (Average): "Now isn't that a nice story. And [f***] you, too" (124). Ellison's snarky "story" isn't really a "story" but a swipe at his audience and the American public in general. In short we are screwing the planet and not doing anything about it.... A "fairy tale" about Earth and how many people it had to kill before people realized the damage they had wrecked.

"Catman" (1974) 4.25/5 (Good): The first half of the story is brilliant. The second half loses some of the power and momentum, and the ending is all too abrupt. The son is a thief who transports himself across the vast arcology of London stealing drugs. The father is a policeman, called the Catman, who hunts his son across the vast construct (with its waterfalls, oceans, gardens, habitation levels) with his mechanical animals -- but only within his shift hours. And then there's a society of half-men who live below ground who have sex with a large machine which seems to slowly consume their bodies and intelligence... And an unusual mother character who desperately wants her husband to catch the son so he gets his promotion....

"Catman" is a baffling yet transfixing experience. The images of a son being chased by his father -- and an assortment of mechanical animals - across a vast future city is one of most memorable sequences of the collection. I'd love to hear your interpretations!

"Hindsight: 480 Seconds" (1973) 3.75/5 (Good): The only of Ellison's works I'd previously read -- in the collection Future City (1973) ed. Elwood... I enjoyed it more this time so I've increased the rating but kept the gist of the original review: The world's cities have lifted into space, la Blish's Cities in Flight, due to an approaching planetoid which will crash into Earth. One man is selected, a poet, to stay on the planet (and die) so that he can send his impressions of the destruction of earth (to the flying cities) for all future generations of the displaced. The story is deeply evocative: How would we process the loss of our home world? And of course, our poet is unable to do justice to the event (is it even possible?) and has more personal concerns."

Uneven, but Worth Reading
By Thomas Parker
This book collects eleven stories that were mostly written in the late 60's and early 70's. It was published in 1974, when Ellison's view of the world and of America was at a low ebb, as he makes clear in one of his patented in-your-face introductions. (Not many authors have the chutzpah to call their readers cowards and sell-outs and fools and...other words that start with f...) Like a lot of collections, it's an uneven affair. A couple of stories are so slight as to make you wonder why they were included at all, and several more are written at such a pitch of paranoid political and cultural rage (an Ellison trademark) as to be a bit embarassing now, forty years down the road. (Embarassing for the reader, that is - I'm sure Ellison would stand by them completely, and would hand a profanity-punctuated beating to anyone who suggested otherwise). But even weaker Ellison stories are still definitely live wires, and a few tales here are very fine, especially the autoboigraphical and deeply-felt One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty, in which a middle aged writer travels back in time to befriend a lonely, outcast little boy - himself, at the age of seven. With Harlan Ellison, you take the good with the bad; you'll find them, not just in the same book, but often in the same paragraph. You certainly can't snooze through his stories - alternately appaling and brilliant, they're never a waste of time.

The book looked like it was already falling apart when I received it. Although it is still good enough to serve its purpose. I don't carry it with me anywhere I leave in the box it came in and only take it out when I need it. I try to avoid damaging it since I am renting it.

Grandson of the Author: Brian@astroexec.com
By Brian L. Danielsen
Not only is the book entertaining, the man was too. He was a great story teller, and a great patriot. I remember the time he told me about treating a dancing bear in a cage at a bar somewhere in NYC (1930's). He couldn't figure how to get into the cage, administer to bear, and not be mauled. His big idea was to call the zoo and stand by to assist. The zoo sent over a young, slight of build, female veterinarian. She step into the cage, gave the bear a shot you-know-where, and promptly left. He was so entertained by this event. Here he was, a big tough NYC NG Captain/ experienced Vet, and this competent young vet just handed him his hat. Female doctors of any kind where so rare in the 30's, that this young lady from the Bronx Zoo made the moment that much more memorable.
I would go on calls with him, sometimes. One client would be a primadonna in a triplex overlooking Central Park, and the next would be to a waitress living in a one room apartment over a bar working three jobs to feed her 27 cats.
Today he is taking care of heaven's cats.

A touching autobiography and lots of cool cat stories
By The Strife of Love in a Dream
The late and dearly missed Dr. Camuti talks about his veterinarian practice in the big city, which concentrates on cats but which includes all sorts of other fauna. His stories are as much about the animals' kooky owners as the animals themselves, showing a touching side of wackiness. There are some famous people in here, but plenty of nearly-anonymous commoners as well.
His writing style is approachable and easily read, and the stories are unique -- you won't have seen anything like these elsewhere. This is not your typical "cat stories" book, all treacley and preachy and maudlin. This is a straightforward guy telling straightforward "no [kidding], there I was"-style war stories, and sounding just like a prototypical NYC veterinarian should.
Do be careful about adopting his advice, of course. Nowadays, we know feeding cats only ground beef is Very Bad For Them, and certainly we have no need of quarterly vitamin shots. This is 1950s medicine, with all that entails.

Don't let Dr. Camuti fool you- he's a charmer!
By Amanda
And so are the many cats that populate his memoir. Written in a down-to-earth, practical manner without any of the gushiness that seems to plague most animal-themed stories lately, Dr. Camuti's love and dedication to animals really shines through in this book. His cat stories are colorful and amusing but also very real- not all owners pay attention to his advice or to their cats, not all cats get well- but that realism makes his stories that much more touching. Also worth reading for the glimpse into New York City life at that time period- Dr. Camuti worked with lots of the celebrities of that era (or, should I say, he worked with their cats). I'd buy copies of this book for all my cat-appreciative friends if I could- it's just that good.
