In Better But Not Well, Richard G. Frank and Sherry A. Glied examine the well-being of people with mental illness in the United States over the past fifty years, addressing issues such as economics, treatment, standards of living, rights, and stigma. Marshaling a range of new empirical evidence, they first argue that people with mental illness―severe and persistent disorders as well as less serious mental health conditions―are faring better today than in the past. Improvements have come about for unheralded and unexpected reasons. Rather than being a result of more effective mental health treatments, progress has come from the growth of private health insurance and of mainstream social programs―such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, housing vouchers, and food stamps―and the development of new treatments that are easier for patients to tolerate and for physicians to manage.

The authors remind us that, despite the progress that has been made, this disadvantaged group remains worse off than most others in society. The "mainstreaming" of persons with mental illness has left a policy void, where governmental institutions responsible for meeting the needs of mental health patients lack resources and programmatic authority. To fill this void, Frank and Glied suggest that institutional resources be applied systematically and routinely to examine and address how federal and state programs affect the well-being of people with mental illness.

A cut and dry policy book

It's a relatively unbiased view of the evolution of mental health policy in the US, and it covers most of the key points, from availability and structure of care to the costs and financing, as well as quality of care. There's also some minor discussion of rights and social stigma based on survey data. However, it buys into the mainstream narrative of psychiatry, which is very positive toward the field, which is challenge by a lot of new research, as well as books such as "American Psychosis". This book is a great start, but you should probably couple it with a few other readings if you really want a comprehensive understanding of what's happened.

I found the coverage of factors that have impacted mental health care in the US very comprehensive and authoritative. The authors are clearly thoughtful about the complexities, including the philosophical and sociological perspectives at play, and extremely knowledgeable about the pragmatic details of policy development and implementation. An excellent work!

Communicate Effectively

I've learned my whole life to fill my sentences with pompous words in an attempt to sound smart. Stabbing my sentences with fluffy words has created writing that I don't understand, let alone those who have to read it!

Rudolf fixes that problem. He understands the pain. He grades terrible papers! His book was easy to understand, and I can finally figure out how to cut the crap from my writing.

About the Author
Mr. Nasim Yousaf began his career as a Pilot Officer in the Pakistan Air Force. He left the cherished profession and became an exporter and a leader in the business community in Pakistan. The author is a founding member of the Board of Directors that established The Pakistan Commercial Exporters of Towels Association (PCETA), one of the largest trade associations in Pakistan. He also held other important positions in the PCETA, including Vice Chairman (North Zone), Member of the Central Executive Committee, and Member of the Textile Quota Committee (TQC) of the PCETA. As part of the TQC, he and other members disbursed quota to exporters of PCETA. Mr. Yousaf also represented the business community in front of various levels of the Government of Pakistan, including the ministerial level, to discuss and resolve trade issues. The author has traveled extensively around the world, which according to him, has been a great source of learning and has broadened his vision on global issues. Since his move to the USA, he has continued to be involved in international trade. Apart from this, Mr. Yousaf spends a considerable amount of time on research and writing books. In addition to his books on the subject of import and export, he has also written a biography on two very important personalities of Pakistan, Allama Mashriqi and Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan, whose lives are inspirations for him. Presently, Mr. Yousaf is working on additional books on trade as well as on Allama Mashriqi’s role in the independence of the Indian subcontinent. Mary had just turned eighteen when her mother told her that she would need to visit the doctor for the first time for a personal check up. Mary wasn't quite sure what her mother meant as her family was very religious and didn't discuss sex or any private things as a matter a fact.

While this was a logical explanation she was still nervous that the doctor was a man instead of their family doctor who was a woman.

When the day came Mary asked her mom to take her but she was busy doing other things with Mary's brothers and sisters and told her to take the bus to the doctors office. Upset, Mary wanted to back out but coming from a strict family she knew that she would get a lashing from her father if she disobeyed her mother so she had no choice.

Once there Mary was surprised by how many younger women were waiting to see the Doctor Maxwell. What was even stranger was all the children they had already that looked alike. Most had light to medium brown hair with blue eyes. She figured she would asked the doctor why this was once she got a chance.

Mary was led into the doctors exam room shortly after and was told to disrobe and the doctor would be in soon. Mary was extremely upset as she thought this was just a general exam. Her mother didn't tell her that she would need to undress. The only thing Mary could think of though was what her father would do to her if she didn't get this check up so she finally started to get undress.

Just then Dr Maxwell came into the room as she was removing her panties. Startled she almost fell to the floor from embarrassment as she wanted to cover herself up... but that was only the beginning as Dr Maxwell explained exactly why Mary had to have this examination.

Everyone’s interested in stories. We read them in books and magazines, watch them at the movies and on television, listen to them over a meal with friends, and tell them ourselves. Deep down, it’s the prime entertainment, and always has been. Not surprising then, that so many photographers want to know how to do it with their images. Aiming for the stand-alone great shot is one thing - and yes, it’s probably the supreme challenge in photography - but storytelling with photographs involves much more. It can, and should, include the great shots, but it also needs to do things like carry a narrative, and above all keep the audience watching the show or turning the pages.

How do you do it? That means how exactly, not how vaguely. It’s never enough to put down a selection of favourite pictures and say, ‘they tell a story’. What story? Is it told well? Does it keep people looking, and following the thread? This is what this book is about, and it’s a subject very close to my heart.

The reason why I’m close to it - and frankly why most of my professional photographer friends are close to it - is that it’s the core skill of being an editorial photographer. All my working life I’ve been on assignment for one client or another, and the assignments have nearly always been a story. The magazine calls and says ‘we’re running a story on this - can you shoot it?’, or ‘here’s the writer’s text; can you make this work?’ And then it starts, the by-now very familiar process of research, logistics, fixing, shooting, sorting out problems, worrying about how it’s going, and the missing shot that I really need, and have we got there yet? During the shoot, it all feels badly unfinished, until there’s a moment and suddenly you realise you really did just take the last shot, and it ties the story up one and for all. This is not at all a good moment, even though you’ve been trying to reach it for a long time, because all of a sudden it’s over. I love all of this, of course, and now I think it’s time to write about it and break the whole thing down and show how, exactly, photo stories happen.

The Photographer's Story: Additional images

The Photographer’s Story was a very different book to do because of the sheer number of images. Each of the stories featured itself needed between a dozen and 20 images, and we also wanted to show how the images related to each other, in layouts and in slideshows. Yet at the same time the length of the book is fixed, so the danger was running pictures too small to be worth looking at. In the end we developed some design solutions that I’m pleased with, including ways of showing the structure of a slideshow — in print. There’s so much that goes on in a slideshow that even the conventional storyboarding methods used in film and television weren’t enough. Anyway, the net result on the picture selection was that we had to drop a large number of images, which couldn’t be helped. So here are some of the images from the Elephant story described on pages 62-63. These are not out-takes - they play a key role in telling the story of the Thai elephant today.

Michael Freeman is a renowned international photographer and writer who specializes in travel, architecture, and Asian art. He is particularly well known for his expertise in special effects. He has been a leading photographer for the Smithsonian magazine for many years, and has worked for Time-Life Books and Reader's Digest. Michael is the author of more than 20 photographic books, including the hugely successful Complete Guide to Digital Photography and The Photographer's Eye.

The Most Comprehensive Book on Photo Stories and Essays Available

Since at least the 1970s there have been a number of fine books on photographic story telling and essays by noted photographers, magazine and book publishers such as Time-Life and National Geographic, how-to authors, and others with many emphases, ranging from theoretical, to how a publisher manages the whole program, to how one photographer operates. Most are long out of print; some are classics and highly collectible. Freeman's "The Photographer's Story" is the latest contribution on this subject, but is more comprehensive, thorough, and up-to-date than others I am familiar with.

Freeman is uniquely qualified to write this book for two main reasons. Firstly, he has been walking the walk since the 1970s doing stories, essays, photographic picture story books, and how-to books in such numbers as makes keeping track no longer useful. He's done so many stories for "Smithsonian" magazine that I'm not sure he still keeps count. But the uniqueness of his qualification is, IMHO (not really H), his ability to articulate his mind in objective, analytical ways on subjects most artists are shy to, refuse to, or cannot address in a concrete fashion. Most artists of any stripe are experts at handwaving and telling about their "feelings," but couldn't say why an image works in an objective sense if their lives depended on it. Freeman is comfortable in making that leap into those unpopular domains.

Better than almost anyone else, he can take a process, define its characteristics and components, talk about how they work to achieve the goal, and how to get there. He is especially clever at inventing schematic representations of aspects of a process that give the reader not just his words and photos, but visual information on the interactions of the process components among themselves and through time to its completion.

So a bit about this book, the organization of which is straight forward. A major theme running through the book is that the possibilities and demands for storytelling with photographs are changing with almost every new electronic medium hitting the markets. Another is that throughout the book he emphasizes the roles of all players and stake holders in the entire process, as seldom is a project a photographer-centric solo effort. His ease within this multi-polar environment is evident in his respect for their roles in handling his own work.

The first section is "The Photo Essay," wherein he introduces and breaks down the "classic narrative" structure of a story and also introduces his first visual schematic, which graphs a model of the rise and fall of tensions through the flow of the story. He uses two of his own stories to illustrate the general idea in one case, and to introduce a schematic method to show the rhythm and pace of the flow of image content, colorfulness, scale of the scene (closeup versus medium and long shots), and the visual weight (in this case, of human faces). He uses this approach several times throughout the book in explaining and illustrating his argument. I have a concern that sometimes - in particular, the schematic for changes in colorfulness - the model needs a bit more explanation for the reader to be certain of understanding what one is seeing, or supposed to see.

In the first section, he also delves into the historical archives to show from where his story originates. He does a superb job of analyzing the all-time classic and great essay by W. Eugene Smith for Life magazine, "The Country Doctor." I've not seen it done from so many points of view, supported by his schematics to separate visual aspects of the images and layouts from the content of those images. He could make a whole book of this type of analysis on other essays and stories.

The second section, "Planning & Shooting," covers a breakout of the different types of photo stories and then looks at the planning required of all participants in the story, from the various editors to participants in the activities, to supporting the shooting itself, to the various uses after shooting. Imagining a shoot without adequate planning is a waste of everyone's time and resources.

The third and last section, "Edit & Show," is the meatiest, and technical. He covers the types and reasons for the various edits, aspects of space-time in the layout, and the differences between print and the various internet and visual media in how a story can be advantageously presented. While tablets, such as the iPad, are the latest influence on changing the presentation of stories, they certainly will not be the last.

This book is arguably the finest current look at its subject. But in another dimension, it is also the fourth of a series starting with "The Photographer's Eye," followed by "_ Mind" and "_ Vision." These together comprise the only extant effort to present the most difficult aspects of the photographic enterprise at an intellectual level. As a foursome, they deserve to be presented as a boxed set. Every university level photography program should require that boxed set. Writing on the arts does not get better than what Freeman has given us.

interesting but repetitive

I had read Perfect Exposure and The photographer eye too. And I have to said this two books are much more better. This one about photography narrative is a good book but it is repetitive in the central ideas.In half the space the importance of create captivating collections, or narratives, the concept of Rhytm and Pacing, the picture script and planning, and Layouts in space and time as neccesary tools could be explained. Then the book illustrate the remake of some of the great stories the author published in important magazines.
I recommend the book to any photographer who want to go to the next step beyond taking individual but good pictures. Not for the beginner who needs to make emphasis first in taking good photos. For this reader go before to the Photographer Eye, and then to Perfect exposure (being this the best of the trilogy). I take off one star because it goes boring and repetitive.

Great read.

I ordered the book because I like Freeman's work, and was disappointed (at first) when I saw that this book was pretty much about photo essays. Having bought it, I decided to read it. And I was shocked to see how much could actually be written on the subject!

I've never done a photo essay, so I'm not sure how useful this really is for me. But now I want to try! And it's written in Freeman's typical style, which I like. After all is said and done, I think I learned a lot, even if I never do a photo essay. So I'm glad I read the book, even though I might never have read it if I knew what it was about before I bought it.

But just be warned: this book really is about creating photo essays; if you don't want to do that, this book may not be for you.

Lori has been rethinking her relationship with her fiance. Her best friend and neighbor, Mike, has noticed she has been getting more and more depressed each day he tried to tell her she needed to dump him. Lori scared that Mike is right but still doesn't do anything, until she walks in on her fiance doing doggie on one of the other neighbors that she realizes just how manipulative and horrible her ex really is. Lori not taking any Sh*t kicks him out head held high. With the new change in life Lori takes the bull by the horns and does something she was always trying to talk her ex-fiance into, she gets a membership and the sex club in town. Mike has lusted after his neighbor for years but she is so sweet and innocent and he likes things a little more and is afraid he would scare her off if she knew his sexual proclivities. The last thing Mike expected to see was Lori at Expose, the sex club. Mike thought he was scaring her away but all he did was kindle the fire. After the weekend of outstanding sex Mike runs scared. Lori isn't going to run crying into the night, and before Mike can catch up to her and apologize he just may have lost her for good and it was not fault of his.

Overall, Read the whole thing in no time I wish it had more it wasn't near long enough I think it could have been longer and more detailed about the other suspense events, but I still Loved it. I loved Lori she was a lot stronger than she thinks she is. And the bonus book is one I read last year loved that one too.

I didn't like the book very well. The character of Lori is rather weak. I mostly just wanted to smack her. The only time she showed any spunk was when she kicked her ex out. I wouldn't recommend this book at all.

I didn't need to read the whole thing to know it was gonna be dumb. All Lori did was cry and bitch. I've no idea why Mike wanted her in the first place. She's not even that bright. I really wanted to get this story on my Kindle for so long, and now I just want to get rid of it. Don't be fooled.

Mixed feelings about this book

I am really split about this book.

Surely, it has A LOT of content and at an attractive price. It has a lot of details and covers many subtopics.

My main issue with it is the poor continuity. Each chapter is written by different authors (well, a few of them, I'd say I've seen at least a dozen names total if not more). There is some repetition, some very basic things are explained several times, which would be fine if they were not just the very basic ones but the more complicated ones to understand. On the other hand, some complex notions are succinctly explained with no diagrams, and sometime assuming non-trivial prerequisites. Overall, I feel the level of explanation is unbalanced. A whole page may be dedicated to reexplaining something that was extensively covered earlier, while sometime a gross reference like "see chapter X" (chapters are maybe 40 pages on average) is used when in my opinion it would make sense to redevelop the idea a bit.

There is very little numerical applications in my opinion. Many formulas are given, but without proper quantification with real examples.

Also, there is very little about on board computers. Don't expect to learn anything about this subject. I think this is a major flaw when you think how critical these systems are today.

I would still recommend this book, but definitely not as a sole reading on the subject.

A Practical book for a Spacecraft Systems Engineer

The Spacecraft Systems Engineering, 4th edition, is one of the better books I have read so far on this subject. The strong points are clarity, subject matter coverage, and updated information. All the areas of spacecraft systems engineering are covered at an intermediate level of theory and mathematical formulation. One area that is slightly lacking, and can use more detail is the human space flight vehicle e.g., the NASA Orion spacecraft (renamed as MPCV), otherwise a very good and practical book for a spacecraft systems engineer.

Good Introduction to Spacecraft Design

This is a good introduction to spacecraft systems engineering. The authors cover all of the classical topics of spacecraft design: space environment, orbital mechanics, spacecraft dynamics, propulsion, structure, attitude control, telecommunication, thermal control, electrical systems. All of these topics are accessible to intermediate/advanced undergraduate aerospace student for self study. As prerequisites, you need just have taken the following courses: Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer. Since the book covers several topics, don't expect to became an expert on each of them with this single text. You need probably to refer to other specialized texts such as Rocket Propulsion Element.

There are several other comparable texts on spacecraft design on the market. One among them is Space Vehicle Design, written by Michael D. Griffin, a former NASA administrator. Both books are comparable and cover approximately the same topics albeit with some differences in style and treatment. As a lot of books on spacecraft design look the same, it is just a matter of personal preference. One of the good points of this book is its listed price, very reasonable comparatively to other hardcover textbook of this size.

Easy to read, informative, and interesting. - EXPENSIVE

This book seemed very easy to read, the flow of literature was informative and easy to digest. No $60 dollars words being thrown around, just simply put thoughts for the la-men man to comprehend. Tiger has taken several ideas, concepts and writing s from other tactical type authors and put them to use in a solid state. He has quotes from Jeff Cooper all the way to Bruce Lee. I found it to be a great building block nook, if you are interested in learning more about tactical defense/shooting, this is a great place to start. The techniques/methods that are explained regarding the 1911 are universal. The pistol techniques can be used for just about any pistol (maybe not a revolver)

Unfortunately, the only major draw back I found was the price. For the size of the book, $25 is a bit steep, plus Amazon charged me about $10 for shipping. Buyer beware of the shipping! Then again, I have purchase books on Amazon where the shipping is more then the book!

In the end, I enjoyed the book, and would recommend it. It only took me about three days to read it. It is a pretty thin book.

Maybe the best "beyond the basics" shooting book

Getting instructional information on practical shooting from a book is pretty hard. It is a "hands on thing" and there is no way of escaping this. But, Tiger McKee makes a good job of it here. The book is basically his observations from taking classes from and teaching practical rifle and pistol marksmanship for many years. There is a lot of interesting "mindset" and psychology of combat information up front that I really liked. Then the book gets down to business and covers various shooting, malfunction and tactical drills. While the book is mostly about the 1911 pistol and the AR carbine most of the skills will apply to any rifle/pistol combo. If you read and then practiced what he says you will learn much faster than just practicing on your own. Some people might not like the format, basically the book looks like a classroom notebook, hand written and all, but I think it's pretty clever.

If Thunder Ranch Had a Handbook....

This would be it. I enjoyed this book immensely because it has taken almost every important aspect that I have learned at Thunder Ranch and put it in a concise format that is easy to review and reenforces techniques that you may have forgotten. The tactics presented here are succinct and logical. It amazes me how much I pick up with each new paragraph and Tiger shares tactical aspects from the other schools he attended.

There are grammatical errors in the book and Tiger admits to this right up front but it really doesn't detract from the presentation considering this started as a training diary.

To really absorb the material, read a little at a time, make notes, review it again later until it sticks. There are literally hundreds of practical applications here. Sort of a Reader's Digest version or Cliff Notes of what you really need to know. One of the best books I have every read on fighting with a handgun or carbine.

About the Author
Bernard Bangley is a recently retired Presbyterian minister who has written for many years. His previous books include Growing in His Image, Spiritual Treasure, Near to the Heart of God, and Talks on the Song of Songs. Educated at Hampden-Sydney College and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, he has held pastorates from the Appalachian Mountains to Sarasota, Florida. He now lives in Lexington, Virginia.

Adapting truth...

Bernard Bangley does a superb job in bringing de Sales' classic works to life. Often the Christian classics can be difficult to muddle through with their archaic and out-dated language, though there is a minefield of wisdom to be had. That's where Bangley comes in. Not only does he reinterpret the works for a modern audience, but he offers these writings in a language that is accessible and understood. As someone who has tried time after time to get through many of the original (Christian classic) books only to give up by page ten, Bangley comes as a God-send! I'm grateful I, along with others, can benefit from the wisdom and heart of these writers. I look forward to reading more of Bangley's "translations" in the future.
