A great classic. I used the first edition many many years ago, so wanted to get the second edition. Didn't even know there was a second edition until I saw this in Amazon.

Magic

I have been an avid acoustic guitarist for some time. I'm always on the lookout for good fingerpicking books, and I was lucky enough to stumble across this. I mainly bought the book for the 5 Alex de Grassi transcriptions, though I have since fallen in love with all 18 songs.

Windham Hill Guitar Sampler provides a range of difficulty that will please both intermediate and advanced players. For the jammers, songs with multiple guitar parts are included, such as Dolphins and Pavanne.

Best of all, selections from this book are diverse enough to keep you interested and playing for hours on end. I have found that many books in this genre provide only a single sound- every song sounds the same as the next. You end up learning one or two, and then retiring the book due to boredom. With Windham Hill Guitar Sampler, this is not the case.

Songs such as Andecy and Prelude from the Bridal Suite are classical. The Bricklayer's Beautiful Daughter, Charlotte, and Window, on the other hand, are light and folky. Even more diverse styles such as celtic/jazz and eastern are touched on with A Momentary Change of Heart (my personal favorite), and 36, respectively.

The bottom line is that this is a superb book, and I would highly recomend it to any guitarist.

Fantastic tablature for aspiring guitarists

I've played for 35 years. I love fine guitar tunes and great fingerpicking tablature when i can find it. This is in the my Top 5 tablature books ever --- and I've explored many. There's a somewhat matching cd with 5 or 6 of these tunes out there used on eBay. Andecy, The Handing Down and Prelude from the Bridal Suite are three I have learned and love. For folks who wish to play timeless fingerpicking pieces ... haunting, spiritual and beautiful songs in this book. The real deal. A bargain -- I have worn my copy out.

Nice transcriptions

This is a nice collection of solo guitar music, mostly recorded in the 80s and early 90s by Windham Hill artists. Difficulty level ranges from moderate to challenging, and the transcriptions I've read thus far work well (there are a few places in the transcription of 'On The Way' by David Cullen that may deviate slightly from his recording, but use your own judgement -- and ears). The book features both regular notation and tablature.

Players should be aware that many of the tunes in this book make use of alternate tunings, and some require a capo. There is a duet or two as well.

They define a symbol as "something that a particular culture considers to mean something else." Each entry features a blue line drawing of the symbol in a generalized pictographic style. Although the quantity of images could have been overwhelming, the symbols are extremely well organized into numbered columns that correspond with the alphabetical front index, or "symbol finder." This index is invaluable because the text itself is composed of eight thematic chapters, among them "Heaven and Earth," "Characters and People," and "Objects and Artifacts." Pertinent cultural meanings for the symbols are refreshingly worldwide, covering Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, the Americas, and the Pacific. Many of the connotations are religious in nature, with referrences ranging from Aztec beliefs to Mesopotamian mythology to major contemporary religions. The editors encourage readers to "dip" into the book and then follow the threads of capitalized cross references. Since graduating from the Courtauld Institute he has written two books on Renaissance art, and is currently working on a book about the history of the Palace of Westminster. Rowena Shepherd is an art historian currently working for English Heritage. Rachel Kennedy is a curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum. She specializes in the art of the 18th century, and has contributed entries on the symbolism of art to a number of dictionaries and encyclopaedias.

Complete Guide to Symbols and Their Meaning

"1000 Symbols" is an extensive compendium of symbols from around the world. What makes this book unique from other books on symbols is the worldwide approach. A specific symbol can mean widely differing things in different cultural contexts and the authors do a wonderful job of examining each interpretation. Each symbol has a number that is cross-referenced to the index at the beginning of the book making them easy to find. In addition, the symbols are categorized into eight general categories for easy browsing. The categories are Heaven and Earth, Characters and People, Body and Actions, Living Creatures, Mythical Beasts, Flowers, Plants and Trees, Objects and Artefacts, and Abstracts. Each of these categories is also subdivided.
Each of the symbols discussed has a line drawing of the symbol along with a detailed description of what the symbol meant to different groups, how it is used today, various ways it was drawn, etc. If you want to know about the various symbols that surround us this is an excellent place to find out. A highly recommended reference for anyone interested in symbols.

I am sorry to report of my disapointment with this title. While it does contain some interesting research, the symbols illustrated are all modernized graphics. The use of traditional and historic depictions of the symbols would have made this work much more readable.

it spends about half of the book talking about classical to Renaissance building styles
and the other half talking about modern, regional, post modern styles
it is truely a educational and interesting read!

Must have book for any architectural library.

Great book for a crash course in Architectural styles around the world. This book is direct to the point and is up to date with modern styles. This book is not like the typical huge and unmanageable books on architectural styles, this book is compact. This is a book you can take to a coffee shop and sit and read cover to cover, and feel like you have traveled through history and around the world and witnessed the evolution in architecture form and style.

This story was a real holiday treat, it was steamy, sexy and fun to read.

Noel is an ER nurse whose sole focus lately has been her job. In the ER she has some crazy nights and some really slow nights. Those nights are when she has time to think about how lonely her life has become. Her Christmases lately have been spent alone in her apartment downing her favorite Merlot. She never could have expected one quite night in the ER she would meet the man of her dreams.

Hunter is a cop who loves his job and lives for the adrenaline rush of catching the bad guys even when those bad guys land him in a hospital bed. Having been in this position many times before he know what to expect. This time fate surprised Hunter when he meets Noel a sweet and sexy ER. At first sight he is determined to make her break all her rules.

This story was a real holiday treat, it was steamy, sexy and fun to read. I am a huge JC Valentine fan I have read nearly all her books. This is another beautiful written tale from JC. Hunter is an alpha male hero with a sexy grin, piercing eyes and a take charge attitude. Noel is a woman resisting the chance at a possible relationship for fear of being hurt.

Hunter and Noel had chemistry to spare from the first moment they meet. After she shoots him down while he is her patient she never thought she would see him again. To her surprise they have a mutual friend and end up at the same Christmas/birthday party. The sparks fly immediately and when Hunter breaks down the walls Noel has put up around herself their attraction is undeniable and nothing can stop this couple from igniting. Their sex scene was fan yourself hot.

My only problem with the story was that I wish it was longer I loved this couple so much that I want to know what happens with them next. Since this is part of the Blue Collar Series maybe Noel and Hunter will pop up in another couples book and we can get an update on how they are doing.

If you have never read a JC Valentine book before this one is a great one to start with it will give you a taste of this amazing author and just like Noel and Hunter you will crave more.

Awesome holiday read!

4.5 Delighted stars for this quick fun read from J.C. Valentine!

At this time of year, all I want to read are Christmas romances. I was thrilled to be given the chance to read this every day blue collar romance from JC Valentine. I have never read any of her books and I was excited to read her work. I was not disappointed. It was delightful, fun and just a great read. It lifted my heart and made me eager to pick up more of JC's work (and I very quickly one clicked Sweetest Temptation which is the first book in the Blue Collar series! Oh and SOB because, well, it's a stepbrother book!).

Noel is a nurse living on the rush of the ER. Hunter is a cop who has spent way too much time in the ER. Their paths cross when after a near fatal encounter lands Hunter in Noel's care. The attraction is instant and their chemistry is amazing. Still, Noel never mixes business with pleasure. Hunter will not stop until Noel gives him a chance to show her that they could be good together. Can a dedicated nurse and one super sexy cop living for the love of their jobs finally find a way to live for the love of each other?

I so enjoyed this novella! FANTASTIC, JC!

Christmas surprise

Noel: A Blue Collar Christmas by J.C. Valentine is a cute novella about Noel a nurse who all she has in her life is work which she loves. She likes being in the Emergency Room because she likes to hide behind the action that can occur. Christmas is coming and her plans consist of spending the holiday alone at home with a bottle of wine. While at work she ends up meeting a patient that makes her tingly all over but she has a no dating patient policy. At her co-worker’s birthday/ Christmas party she runs into the same patient that sets her body on fire. Hunter is a cop who finds himself in the hospital with a gunshot wound. While there he meets a cute nurse that he has his eyes set on taking out on a date. This is a nice Christmas story of life, love and new beginnings. Noel decides to take a chance by breaking her own rule and goes out on a date with Hunter. This is a story that will put a smile on your face. I was given an ARC of this book for an honest review. I give this story 4 stars

About the Author

Stephen Skinner began his career as a Geography lecturer and magazine publisher, but his long term interests have always been Western magic and feng shui.

During the 1970s he was the driving force behind Askin Publishers, producing a number of classic magical works by Cornelius Agrippa, Paracelsus, Austin Osman Spare, Aleister Crowley, and others. During the 1970s he co-wrote many books with Francis King, including the still popular�Techniques of High Magic. Also with Francis King he wrote�Nostradamus.�His interest in prophecy stimulated by this book, he went on to write the best selling�Millennium Prophecies.

Stephen is credited with bringing the art of Feng Shui to the West, and in 1976 he wrote the�Living Earth Manual of Feng Shui, which was the first English book on feng shui in the 20th century.

Stephen has written more than 35 books, which have been published worldwide in 28 different languages. These books have had introductions by such diverse people as Colin Wilson, HRH Charles Prince of Wales, and Jimmy Choo, shoe designer to the stars.

Stephen lives in Singapore. Stephen is the first Westerner to be awarded the title of Grand Master of Feng Shui by the International Feng Shui Association.

A labor of love !

The author informs us of the history and usage of the Chinese compass, a topic vital to the heart of all Chinese thought of cosmology and philosophy. With that being said, I dare anyone to find anything more than a paragraph on the topic in any work (in English)anywhere in the world. This was a labor of love, and it reads and feels like it. I love my Kindle but you will want to buy an actual copy of this book, and hold it while you read, look at the glossy pictures, etc. I thank the author for taking what had to be a lifetime devotion to the topic to be able to talk as intelligently on the subject as he does. I have learned a tremendous amount about Chinese culture and thought from his work. I recommend it highly, and equally for scholars and feng-shui enthusiasts both.

Big book, but doesn't help me figure out the practical use of the Lo P'an

I bought this book motivated by an enthusiasm to uncover the secrets of a fascinating type of "mandala", the Chinese Lo P'an compass, and to understand Feng Shui. However, I am having trouble finding enough information in this book to make sense of any readings I might take with the Lo P'an. Stephen Skinner does a great job presenting the history of the Lo P'an, or Chinese Feng Shui compass, which intriguingly predates European compasses by 1500 years. He describes the two main types of Lo P'an, and the different rings on them. However, the one area the book doesn't address, which for any practical use of the Lo P'an seems MOST important to address, is the meanings of the individual sectors of each of the rings. Without being given meanings for these sectors, I find myself completely unable to make any practical use of the Lo P'an, and thus rather frustrated.

For instance, the most important ring on the Lo P'an is described as the "24 Mountains" ring. This is a ring of 24 sectors, each of which has a certain Chinese name. HOwever, apart from correlating each of these 24 sectors with yin or yang, and the Chinese 5 Elements Wood, Water, Fire, Metal and Earth, no meanings for each of these sectors is given. So if for instance I take a Lo P'an reading on the facing direction of a particular structure, and find that it corresponds to earth and to yang, what the heck does that tell me about it, compared to any other possible combination of yin/yang and the 5 Elements? The same problem exists, as far as I can tell, for all of the other rings on the Lo P'an, such as the "60 Sexagenary Combinations" or the fascinating-sounding "60 Mysterious Gates", or the tantalizing sounding "72 Dragons": the NAMES of each of the Sectors are given, in Chinese and in some cases in English too, and sometimes associated animals or planets are named as well, but for NONE Of these sectors is any actual MEANING given, nor is one instructed on any method of finding such a meaning.

The one ring where information is presented which comes closest to an attribution of meanings, is for the Hsiu ring, or the 28 Lunar Mansions. HEre we are given associated planets, animals, chi luck paths, as well as lists of other correspondences, images, and what look intriguingly like sigils from a modern Chinese Almanac. However, Skinner makes no mention of whether these Chinese Lunar Mansions correspond to the INdian/Arabic 28 Lunar Mansions, and I don't find any similarities in the correspondences.

I would dearly love to know what the 72 Dragons stand for, or discover the secrets of the 60 Mysterious Gates, or be able to penetrate the significance of the 24 Mountains in their 3 forms of Earth, (Hu)Man and Heaven, or know any of the meanings of any of the other rings and their sectors, but alas, nowhere in the 430 pages of this big book can I find any of that, and so all I can do is look at my pretty Lo P'an and be unable to use it. Am I missing something? Are there other books on Feng Shui out there that provide these meanings, so important but so elusive within this large and sadly incomplete guide?

Essential Reading for the serious student or practitioner

This book is a treasure for anyone seriously interested in Feng Shui and its history, through the evolution of the luopan (compass) over a several thousand year period. As a professional practitioner for over 20 years, I learned many new things about the luopan from this book, as well as about early Feng Shui masters and their contributions. I am so grateful to Stephen Skinner, fulfilling a very essential need for this kind of information to be preserved as well as explained in a modern context.

Not all teachers or schools in the classical Feng Shui community discuss all the rings of the luopan, which is really quite fascinating, regardless of whether one even intends to use more of the rings for their applications. The descriptions and history creates a greater appreciation for the whole field and its origins in astronomy. That said, this book is not "light" reading. I can see how some references may even be hard to follow, unless one is already familiar with classical Feng Shui and the basics in Chinese metaphysics. But with that prerequisite, the reader should have many epiphanies reading about the origins and justifications for so many additions to the luopan over time. It should be obvious that the author was not intending to write a beginners Feng Shui how-to book. Guide to the Feng Shui Compass was meant for the more advanced student or practitioner. His earlier books make for wonderful companions to this one.

Over the years I have been asked to recommend other Feng Shui authors and the list has always been a bit short, with just a dozen or so authors compared to the hundreds who have written books in English since the 1990's. Skinner's books are a much higher caliber than most, to say the least.

In Guide to the Feng Shui Compass, Skinner has no part in the folklore and fairy tales which plague many books trying to relate a kind of pseudo-history of Feng Shui. The facts are there and the luopan's history lets readers understand better what were the priorities of the Chinese, so long ago, and how sophisticated they were in both metaphysics and in science.

Reference for project

Although my review, for the intended purpose, is at an early stage It seems so far that it is exactly what I was searching for which is a reference text or publication that we could use in an ongoing university investigation project which I have started with seven of my SUAGM-Orlando Campus students. We are writting, and intend to publish, what could be a textbook and or at a minimum an information publication in book form, in Spanish, for Hispanic students/readers, that discusses in laymans terms, what I call "the modern Bill of Rights" of the U.S. Constitution.
Lets see what happens!
