Babbitt, by Sinclair Lewis

Babbitt, first published in 1922, is a satirical novel by Sinclair Lewis. Largely a critique of American culture, society, and behaviour, it challenges conformity and "the American Dream". Middle-aged George F. Babbitt, a property developer is a leading citizen in the town of Zenith. He is lovingly married to his wife Myra, with whom he has three children. Despite all his professional success and nice family, Babbitt believes he is living a dull, staid, middle-class life. He starts searching for a greater purpose but his life is poised on a slippery slope. His journey raises thought-provoking questions which were as relevant then as they are today.

From Publishers Weekly
Lewis's tale of middle-class frustration, stress and success in the 1920s is brought to life by the L.A. Theatre Works 1987 full cast production featuring more than 30 actors, including Ed Asner (as Babbitt), Judge Reinhold, Ted Danson, Richard Dreyfuss, Helen Hunt and John Lithgow. With a deep and raspy voice and with great projection, Asner delivers a believable and amusing performance that securely anchors the entire production. Whether bullying his family or spouting politics with his friends at the club, Asner keeps the consistency of the self-aggrandizing character solid throughout. Jazz music segues well between scenes, though without any additional production sound beyond voices, it can at times feel out of place. While the full cast proves enjoyable in their individual parts, many take turns narrating the exposition throughout the production. At times, this is executed well, but sometimes it feels as if the director is just trying to give everyone more voice time. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
First published in 1922, Babbitt is an authentic modern American classic, a biting satire of middle-American values that retains much of its poignancy today. George F. Babbitt, Lewis's outwardly successful but inwardly unhappy real estate salesman, still seems real. His story makes engrossing reading and is ideal for audio listening. With Babbitt himself at the center of every scene, it is impossible for listeners plagued by frequent interruptions to lose track of the story line. Narrator Wolfram Kandinsky has a voice that many listeners may find grating; however, his reading here conveys an appropriate ironic tone that is especially apt when he reads Babbitt's own lines. Review
"This is world-class radio theatre with, for once, an American label." -- Dan Sullivan, Los Angeles Times

Sinclair Lewis' classic satire of the ignorantly entrapped entrepreneur gains relevance as a radio play. [T]his sumptuous production features such talents as Amy Irving, Marsha Mason, and Richard Dreyfuss. Edward Asner plays George F. Babbitt with the resolute gusto of the stereotypical American businessperson. . . . [T]his lavish recording sets a magnificent standard. -- Joseph Keppler, Booklist, October 15, 1989

The paradigm for Babbitt on cassette remains the multi-voiced, unabridged performance by L.A. Theatre Works. -- AudioFile

Highly Entertaining
By Jeffrey Leach
Sinclair Lewis wrote a series of satires that exposed the hypocrisy of early 20th century America. “Babbitt” is a snapshot of the life of George F. Babbitt, a somewhat prosperous middle class businessman who lives in Zenith, Ohio. Zenith has a population of 300,000+, and has an active business community. This community has its own rituals and ironclad rules. These rules consist of being one of the gang, being a member of all the right clubs and organizations, and never deviating from the ideals of business and money. These rules cause enormous difficulties for Babbitt when he goes through a midlife crisis at the end of the book and begins spouting liberal ideas and associating with the “wrong” crowd.
This is my first encounter with Sinclair Lewis. I really don’t know why I chose to read “Babbitt” first, as I also have copies of “Main Street” and “Arrowsmith”. I think it was the unusual cover of the Penguin edition, which is a picture of a painting called “Booster” by Grant Wood. To me, that picture IS Babbitt, and I’ll always be able to see Babbitt in my head whenever I’m reminded of this book. There really isn’t a lot of symbolism here (and the symbolism that is here is pretty easy to decipher) and the prose is much closer to our present day writing and speech. This is brilliant satire, and you’ll laugh out loud at many of the situations Babbitt gets himself into. An especially hilarious incident occurs when one of the local millionaire businessmen finally accepts an invitation to dine with Babbitt. The evening goes badly because Babbitt is in a lower social class. Lewis then shows Babbitt going to a dinner at an old friends house who is in a lower class then him. It’s hilarious to see the similarities between the two events, and it brings home how class is strictly enforced in Zenith, and by extension, America.
Babbitt is a person that I found myself both hating and liking, often within the space of one page. He’s ignorant, in that he is a major conformist who often repeats slogans and phrases merely because others in his circle say the same things. He’s a namedropper who refers to people he doesn’t even know as though they were his best friends. He’s also high volume. Babbitt is one of those people we all know who is always boisterous and noisy so they can hide their own insecurities or ignorance. Just when you think you can’t stand Babbitt for another second, Lewis tosses in a situation that makes you feel for the man. Babbitt is the boss at a real estate company, and he worries about his employees liking him. When a confrontation arises with one of his salesmen, Babbitt frets and doesn’t want to fire the guy, although the rules of business eventually force him to do exactly that. He wants all of his employees to like him. He also feels bad about cheating on his wife while she is away and worries about what his children will think of him when he comes in drunk after a night of carousing. Ultimately, although Babbitt can be a major heel, the reader is almost forced to sympathize with him. This is true especially at the end of the book, when Babbitt renounces his liberal ways and rejoins his old colleagues. His return to the pack is not quite complete, however. Babbitt is changed by his transgression, and has learned a few lessons that he imparts to his son on the last page of the book, thus ending the tale on an upbeat note.
I would like to have seen a better section of explanatory notes in this Penguin edition. While some of the more obscure references are defined, many are not. Also, some of the language in the book is very 1920’s slang, and for a 21st century ear, it can be difficult to pick up on some of them. This book is both funny and sad, but well worth reading. Sinclair Lewis eventually won Pulitzer and Nobel prizes for his literary endeavors. It’s not hard to see why. Recommended.

So those were the good old days?
By Allen Smalling
George F. Babbitt is middle-aged and middle-class. He lives in a medium-sized home in a medium-sized city in the Middle West. He's a middleman--he sells real estate. He went to a state university and depends on his secretary to fix the spelling and grammar in his letters. His children fight over who gets to use the car. His life is pretty straight and narrow, until he begins an affair when his wife is out of town and all of a sudden things aren't so middle-of-the-road anymore.
Sound like anyone you know? But "Babbitt" was published--almost unbelievably--in 1922. Funny how little some things have changed. Lewis's satire on suburban life and its conformities was an instant hit. Even today, we know what a Babbitt is--a guy who's all show and no go--whose lifestyle and opinions have been furnished for him but maybe whose soul is a little out of whack. It's a pity that schools usually assign the much slower-paced "Main Street". Read "Main Street" to see what life used to be like. Read "Babbitt" to see how we got to where we are today.

Peppy All-American Booster Weathers Mid-Life Crisis
By Bob Newman
Sinclair Lewis and Thomas Hart Benton, the artist, were about the same age, they both focussed on the American Heartland, and as I read Lewis, I see that they both had something else in common. They both had a tendency to draw cartoonish characters. George F. Babbitt is the main character of a satire by the same name; you might even laugh aloud in some places. Lewis is skillful, but at times, heavy-handed. He has portrayed an average Joe of 1920, the pep- and vim-obsessed go-getting businessman who was the bedrock of our industrial age, hypocritical, materialist, crooked, conformist, even proto-fascist. Babbitt is a real estate agent, a family man surrounded by the wealth of material goods provided by thriving industrial capitalism. He belongs enthusiastically and unquestioningly to any organization dedicated to preserving his and his family's ready access to those goods---professional group (realtors association), Boosters, church, and set social circle. He spouts meaningless platitudes on every subject, knows nothing except the price of real estate and methods of collusion, and ignores his feelings, his family, and the rest of the world, all the while believing that his city, state, and country are the best in the world. The first 90-odd pages of BABBITT are pure genius; one of the best character portraits you are likely to find in American literature---but it is a caricature after all. Lewis' choice of names underlines his cartoonish glee in writing this brilliant novel---Vergil Gunch, Professor Pumphrey, Chet Laylock, Matt Penniman, Muriel Frink, Opal Mudge, Carrie Nork, and Miss McGoun---names that could have been annexed years later by MAD magazine ! "Babbitt" has long been a word in American English, signifying a conforming materialist citizen without a mind of his own. Perhaps this is not entirely fair.
George goes through a mid-life crisis, rebels against his static, materialistic life with its know-nothing attitudes, its moral certitudes, and its boring routines. His closest friend (aren't there certain unspoken overtones of homosexual love ?) commits a dastardly deed, breaking George's heart. "On the rebound", he meets the fantastically-named Tanis Judique, femme fatale la Midwest. Certain consequences arise, Lewis brings in his ever-present fear of American fascist tendencies, and there's a rather hopeful ending, also in the American tradition. If you are looking for a place to begin reading Sinclair Lewis, BABBITT is an excellent choice. If you already know other Lewis novels, don't miss this one. I would say that with "Main Street", "Elmer Gantry" and "Dodsworth", BABBITT is at the solid gold core of Sinclair Lewis' work. He certainly did deserve that Nobel Prize.

Three Patients: International Perspective on Intensive Care at the End of LifeFrom Brand: Springer

This volume explores how the scarce resources of intensive care units should be distributed. Three hypothetical patients, each with a different chance of survival, desire intensive care. A multinational panel of experienced critical care physicians offers assessments of the patients' conditions and outlines approaches to treatment. These approaches are then examined by academic medical experts and a medical ethicist, as well as from a legal perspective. The result is a well-rounded and introspective look at care for critically ill patients at or near the end of life.

"Three patients" or America's preoccupation with autonomy
By Antonios Liolios
An interesting book, probably unique in its kind. Dr Crippen is an intensive care specialist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who in 1996 started an international internet discussion group (CCM-L) to deal with many issues involving critically ill patients. More than 1,000 members have enrolled. This is exceptional in the sense that for the first time health care professionals and providers from all over the world were able to interact and exchange information and opinions in such a direct, facile, almost immediate way.
A fundamental problem - As the population ages and life may be "artificially" extended with the use of sophisticated and often expensive technical support, ICU availability and costs have become an issue of growing public importance and concern. Dr Crippen created three hypothetical patients and asked critical care providers from all over the globe to offer their comments on their management. The result is this remarkable book which is surprisingly easy to read despite the use of specialized terminology. Different perspectives based on different cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds emerge as the reader proceeds. A physician from South Africa describes the huge demand for ICU beds and the limited availability. Physicians from India and Russia underline the importance of the patient's social and financial status and what impact this may have on future decisions related to hers/his critical care. A physician from the Netherlands describes the universal coverage health system available in his country and how the decision for further care rests primarily on the physician's medical judgment. A physician from Israel tries to achieve a balance between religious constraints and futile care. And at the end of the book, non-physician critical care providers contribute with vivid descriptions of pertinent cases and with their perception of futility. Among them, a hospital chaplain describes how she helps her patients deal with the fear of the incoming inevitable death by bringing them closer to a picture of a God who is love, mercy and compassion instead of fear, punishment and revenge.
It is evident throughout the book that one of the major issues shaping critical care costs and distribution in the USA is unlimited patient autonomy and overzealous litigation. Increased physician mistrust on behalf of the patients is stated as a major cause of this phenomenon. Whereas many physicians outside USA would assume a role conceived as paternalistic for the USA standards, patients in the USA are often offered a menu of available option regarding their future critical care treatment ("Mr. Jones, in case your breathing worsens do you want us to proceed with mechanical ventilation? In the event your heart stops, do you want us to start chest compressions?" and so on... )
Under the editing of Dr's Crippen, Kilcullen and Kelly a balance and an answer is sought. It is not an easy task but the team involved is one of the best international teams available. I highly recommend this book. It underlines once again the concept that a good question is often more important than the answer.

And this little treatment is just right!
By Amazon Customer
From Dr. Hoyt's chapter "Globalization of Critical Care"
"There is only one way to explain the birth of this book. That is CCM-L..., an electronic bulletin board that is devoted to critical care medicine), and Dr. David Crippen, one of the book's editors. An avowed nonconformist and refugee from the 1960's, Dr. Crippen has connected intensive care unit (ICU) physicians from around the world by means of the Internet. He has singlehandedly, without commercial sponsorship, woven a network of international intensivists. Nothing like this has ever occurred before. All readers of this book are being treated to a unique experience."
I might add a historical irony. One of Dr. Crippen's ancestors was Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen. This man was the first criminal to be arrested in 1910 via the use of wireless technology. The earlier Dr. Crippen had murdered and disposed of his wife, then sought escape by going on an ocean liner with his mistress (disguised as his 12 yr. old son). The Captain grew suspicious (he saw the "father and son" holding hands and appearing amorous) and wired back to shore. This then led to a spectacular arrest as a member of Scotland Yard traveled on a faster ship and arrived in time to board and arrest Dr. Hawley Crippen. The papers at the time had a field day and this case was part of the "inspiration" for the Alfred Hitchcock film "Rear Window" starring James Stewart, Gene Kelly, and Raymond Burr. Now at the turn of another century we have yet another Dr. Crippen again making history via the use of a new "wireless" technology-- the internet. And the issue of death is involved. But instead of the sensational and criminal death of one person, we have the issue of death and dying in ICU's all over the world.
The four issues interwoven and discussed throughout the book are 1) patient autonomy, 2) beneficence (providing benefit), 3) nonmaleficence (doing no harm), and 4) distributive justice. Does patient autonomy imply not only the right to refuse treatment, but also to insist upon whatever aggressive therapies they may desire (and may have looked up on the internet)? Could we provide more benefit by trying to ease suffering during the end of life as opposed to prolonging life by a matter of days to weeks? To what extent do patients, on the surface appearing calm and sedated, actually suffer as we apply futile resuscitation efforts in their last days? If we are to formally apply some legal formula for the just distribution of critical care resources, is this a decision best left for medical professionals? Or is it a political and ethical decision for the public at large? Those looking for easy and short answers to these questions will be disappointed with this book. Many of the chapter's authors take divergent viewpoints.
What I found interesting was how several authors pointed to a historical trend in the USA. In the old fee-for-service era, when all provided technology and service was very lucractively billed, it was the families whom were going to court to have futile life support terminated. Now, in the new era DRG's, capitation & shrinking reimbursement, it is the hospitals and MD's whom are seeking to legally no longer provide futile care. This seems to imply that there has always been an economic foundation as to the determination of what constitutes "futile care". If we are discussing the compassionate and just application of medical technology and service then "futile care" may be seen as one thing. If we are talking about the provision of billable medical services then "futile care" may be seen as quite something else.
If this book has any one failing in my opinion it is that the issue of Palliative Care isn't addressed adequately. I feel this issue warranted a full chapter at least. While "palliative care" was mentioned in passing by several contributors, a more in depth look at the international differences would have been quite revealing. In many countries Palliative Care is it's own specialty. "Doing everything" is usually meant to do everything in regards to prolonging life, not doing everything to ensure a good death-per many of our default biases. Indeed a recent SCCM pamphlet I received in the mail, titled "ICU, Issues and Answers" and meant for family members of ICU patients, answers the question ""What is meant by `doing everything' with the following.
"'Doing everything' implies tht any and all appropriate therapies will be utilized in order to preserve life." The pamphlet goes on to describe how MD's aren't required to offer therapies that would be medically ineffective. But what if we expanded our definition of "doing everything" to include effective and compassionate end of life care. That care may not be "critical" in the technological sense, but certainly it is "intensive" from the standpoint of patient need and clinician time, energy, and professionalism.
One chapter is by an RT and is titled "Advanced Medical Technology and End of Life, A Respiratory Care Practitioner's Perspective by David Walker, MA RRT. Mr. Walker eloquently describes a "day in the life" of a Respiratory Therapist.
Another chapter is titled "End of Life Care in the Intensive Care Unit" by Gabriele Ford CCRN. Ms Ford paints a rather disturbing picture of what it is like to oversee the provision of futile care.
This is one of the most interesting and riveting books I've read in a while. It is a book which deserves to be both read over again as well as passed around. No ready-made solutions pop out of the book, but I assure you that your cerebral matter will be quite stimulated.

Put this on your list!

For all the information packed into this book, it reads like a rich and compelling narrative rather than a stuffy textbook. Care plans for three critically ill patients are debated by a diverse panel of experts from around the globe. The debate is lively and energetic, engaging and candid. Geared for anyone with an interest in healthcare, it goes beyond clinical medicine to consider ethics, the law, and the three individuals behind the Three Patients.

It would be best to find another book on this subject.
By A Customer
The book has a rather caustic introduction stating that other fluid mechanics books fail to properly teach the subject.
Extensive use of wierd units such as slugs/ft3 make rather simple problems difficult. Many problems are reduced to exercises in unit manipulation.
No references for equations or tables are given to enable further study on a particular subject.
Lack of symbol definitions complicate reolution of problems.

This book is a problem solving guide. It is intended to help in figuring out problems. hence the name. It is like all of the books in this series. A great help in learning how to solve the problems. All types of units are used since in the real world all different units are use. Well worth the money

Fluids Book saved my semester
By Amazon Customer
I haven't taken Fluid Mechanics in around 3 years. This book was an incredible review guide with many problems solved step by step with underlying assumptions. These REA guides should be a mandatory reference guide for people who go out of practice from solving problems. The problems are also a good way to test your understanding as well.

The REA Problem Solver book is an incredibly decent supplementary tool for an existing Text book.

The Oz Factors: The Wizard of Oz as an Analogy to the Mysteries of Life, by Lawrence R. Spencer

Our humanity has long since been exceeded by the power of the wicked witches of science and government to destroy all life with nuclear weapons, alter our DNA and control our minds with psychotropic drugs and our lives with media lies. Our thoughts and conjectures about life and the universe are often based on assumptions, unproven theories, hearsay, rumors and misinformation. Decisions we make in life may be based on ancient attitudes and archaic practices. There are 12 common denominators that prevent observation, understanding, and workable solutions to problems of existence. How do each of these "Oz Factors" influence our history, science, philosophy, our lives and our future? We can chose our own Yellow Brick Road. We can pull back the curtain of rhetoric and dogma. We can build a better Emerald City for ourselves and our children. Do you really want to go back to Kansas?

A must read for all citizens of Earth! --Shirely Cage

From the Publisher
LOGIC IN THE LAND OF OZ

"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more. We must be over the rainbow!"--Dorothy from 'The Wizard of Oz'

What if you were in Dorothy's shoes? First, you run away from home to save your dog from being destroyed by the sheriff. Then, you get amnesia from being knocked on the head by a window frame. Next, you're swept up by a storm and carried far away from home. Finally, you crash-land in an alien world.

How would you feel?

Many of us, like Dorothy in 'The Wizard of Oz', feel as though we have crash-landed far, far from our own, personal home; far away from the place in our hearts or in our dreams where everything is just exactly the way we want it to be; a place where there is no trouble. We don't quite know what happened to our home or how we ended up where we are now, but we have a vague, fleeting feeling, that our home is still there, waiting for us to come back.

Is there really such a place?

Is it just a dream?

If such a place exists, how do we get there from here?

Who are we?

How did we get here?

Where is here?

These are primordial questions--the original, fundamental questions about the mysteries of life and universes which have existed since the beginning of time.

One method of figuring out the answers to questions is to compare an unknown subject to one that is similar, but already known. The comparison of two similar things is called an analogy. Storytelling, teaching, explaining things to young children, and scientific research all use analogies as a tool for better understanding.

Thus we begin our journey into "The Wizard of Oz" as an Analogy to the Mysteries of Life.

Where are the hidden traces left by the Gods?" Rig Veda, Book I,

Review of The Oz Factors
By Robert W. Johnson
The purpose of this book is to give a reader some guidelines in a quest to solve the mysteries of life. In my opinion, it serves that purpose well. Each of the 12 Oz factors represents a "common denominator of Western Logic which prevents observation, understanding, and the attainment of workable solutions to the problems of human origin and existence." Further, the author states, "The allegorical story of The Wizard of Oz and its timeless characters is an appropriate vehicle through which to learn more about the mysteries of life." If you read the book, I think you will agree. The learning of philosophical principles is thereby made not only easier, but actually delightful.
Here are a few of the Oz factors, to whet your appetite for the others:
Missing Information: Most real thinkers would agree that a valid concept of any subject that all information pertinent to it be available. But, study of almost any subject reveals not only that there are missing pieces to the puzzle, but that often the pieces are missing because vested interests (another Oz factor) have deliberately withheld them from the public.
Assumptions: Every theory presented by so-called authorities in science, religion, politics, etc contains one or more assumptions. If the assumption is false, the theory crashes. And so we suspect that the reason why assumptions are rarely listed is that their presence would expose the weaknesses in the view being advanced.
Source of Information: Many sources of information like to "play God", promoting unquestioning belief in their views. Example from Science: "We're smart and you're not, so just accept what we say." Example from Religion: "We're holy and you're not, so just accept what we say." They need to be told, "Curb your dogma!"
False Information: Investigation shows that many sources deliberately put out false information, for reasons related to the benefit of the organization they support. To quote the author: "Lies replace the truth when a vested interest is being served."
I could go on with praises for this book, but space won't permit it. Bottom line: If you want to be a clearer thinker and a more successful searcher for truth, you will do well to read this book.

Pointing out the truth behind the cover story
By pmgeorgic
This is a book that you will pick up and read again and again. The topics are fed to you slowly and then you are hit with the cold hard truth, that the public has been duped on every side. For those of you who wish to share the truth, this is a great reference book of material for conversation that can become explosive. I have the book close to me most of the time. This is one to own and keep reading as time goes on. There are more and more areas of reality to address then anyone has ever realized or cares to observe in most cases.. Few know the truth or even wish to accept the truth. Life is not always as it seems.

Mandatory reading for all citizens of Earth!
By DeDee Cage
This is an incredible book that will open your eyes to the real history of mankind, the current precarious conditions of our world's ecology, economy, and social structures under the influence of the powerful and oppresive vested interests, and the propaganda machines they control and use so well.
I could not put this book down as Lawrence Spencer gave me a history lesson unlike any I ever had before. And even as I was being amazed by this tapestry of the history and development of the educational, medical, pharmaceutical, banking, government and military organizations of our world, it was the combined impact of their effects on our planetary environment, the health, sanity, and freedom of all beings that changed my viewpoint forever. I was so shocked that it took this book to draw back the curtains of illusion and make the truth so evident that I had to admit to an old, nagging apprehension that things were not quite as they appeared or were being "officially" presented to be.
The author's humor and wit kept me glued to this story, and the analogy of "The Wizard of Oz" to these frightening mysteries of life made the vast scope of this work magically comprehensible. He even exposes the simplicity of how to handle our information overload so that we can actually see and determine for ourselves just what is actaully going on "in the merry old land of Oz" so we can act to help create a meaningful future on this planet. I foresee this book as a major motivation for increased global awareness and social responsibility that will rejuvenate our hopes for the future generations with positive and effective actions taken now.

Anne Neville, by Amy Licence

Shakespeare's enduring image of Richard III's queen is one of bitterness and sorrow. But who was the real Anne? As the Kingmaker's daughter, she played a key role in his schemes for the throne. In 1483 Anne found herself catapulted into the public eye and sitting on the throne beside Richard. The circumstances of their reign put unprecedented pressure on their marriage; amid rumors of affairs and divorce. This fascinating and elusive woman is shrouded in controversy and unanswered questions. Amy Licence reassesses the long-standing myths about Anne's role, her health and her marriages, to present a new view of the Kingmaker's daughter.

Biography of a Tragic Medieval Queen: Anne Neville
By Deborah
This is an excellent biography. First, Amy Licence's style is extremely readable. Second, she clearly delineates what is fact and what is conjecture on her part or the part of other historians, and she clearly strives to be unbiased in her opinions, offering multiple viewpoints. A good example of this is found in her analysis of Anne and Richard's marriage:

"The thorny question remains. Did Richard love Anne? If so, why do the rumors
suggest that he treated her cruelly in her last months of life? Setting aside the
scurrilous stream of gossip that dogged Richard during and after his life, what
happened between husband and wife during what must have been, for Anne, a
`winter of discontent'? If she loved him, the disintegration of their family unit and
her health must have been the tragic cost of the crown she now wore. While fifteenth-
century definitions of marriage render these responses anachronistic, a modern analysis
of his behaviour of 1484-85 cannot avoid such a question. If Richard had loved her, at
any point, was this overridden by political imperatives and the need to protect himself
and the fragile dynasty from increasing attack? Had his affection been gradually
eroded over the course of their years together? Had he married her purely for her
inheritance? It would be wrong to assess Richard through a romantic filter when it
comes to his marriage; kings did tire of wives they had once loved and seek to replace
them with younger models in order to father sons. Elizabeth of York's own son,
Henry VIII, provides enough evidence for this. There is no doubt that he was
romantically in love with Catherine of Aragon as a young man, yet their failure to
produce a living son undermined his emotion. The desire to qualify the Gloucesters'
relationship as a love match is strong, but there is little evidence to support or
disprove such a theory. It is also natural to seek positive interpretations, in the
interests of balance, when rejecting the centuries of defamation that had done so
much damage to assessments of Richard as a man and a king. It may have been
Anne's tragedy that their previously harmonious marriage did not fit the requirements
of a royal match. Richard may have loved her as a wife, but considered that she
failed in her primary function as a queen. If any turning point can be identified,
the loss of Edward must be it. If they had remained as duke and duchess, the boy's
death would have had predominantly personal ramifications. As king and queen, it
opened the kingdom to invasion and conflict. Sadly for them as individuals, the
Gloucesters' marriage was undone by their lack of fecundity. If Anne was Richard's
tragic queen, he was, no less, her tragic husband."

Additionally, Licence provides a wealth of information about life in medieval England. Finally, two other pluses are the large number of color photographs and the information in the Epilogue about the discovery of Richard's skeleton under the famous, or infamous, social services car park. The last three pages of photos are of the dig and Richard's skeleton. Anyone interested in late medieval England in general and Richard III and Anne Neville in particular would be interested in this biography.ANNE NEVILLE

Not enough about Anne
By Suzanne Hawkins
While the book was informative and easy to read, there was not much information about Anne Neville. It would have been better titled as a book about Richard III with small passages about his wife and queen, Anne.

Also, the author's need to continually go back and quote scenes from Shakespeare's Richard III was quite annoying, having nothing to do with real history, and little to do with Anne. Her use of Earl Rivers and Lord Scales in the same paragraph for Anthony Wydeville, he was only Lord Scales at the time, could be confusing to someone not very familiar with the Wydeville family.

All in all, I cannot recommend this book to someone looking for a biography or even a history of Anne Neville. The author spends too much time and resources on Richard of York.

If this book included instructions on how to actually build the projects it discusses, it would be worth buying. As it is, there are only some vague guidelines and not-very-useful sketches. If you want to build any of these projects, you would in almost every case, be much better off using a search engine to find a page online that actually tells you how; It's free, and you're more likely to get detailed information.

The only reason I give this book more than 1 star is that there are at least a couple of projects that I haven't encountered online--so it seems to be at least somewhat original.

Increasing depth of understanding.
By M. Scott
I have been a solar electric and solar hot water installer for 3 years. I can design and install a system with ease and confidence, but the projects in this book increased my understanding to a whole new level. It was like learning about solar from the inside out. I always enjoy it when I can learn about something I know well from a different angle. Some of my friends bought the book for themselves after thumbing through my copy. I recommend this book for anyone who likes to have a hands on approach to solar in many different areas.

Fun, but scant on details
By Gail Lipfert
I was disappointed in this book. It's hard to tell who the book is aimed at - an electronics buff or a middle school science teacher. There is almost enough information to complete many of the simpler projects, but not enough to tackle the more interesting ones. And some of the projects have no directions at all!

I would buy this book if I wanted to get inspired and play around with some simple projects, but if I were interested in constructing a photovoltaic system or a solar hot water heater, I would find another book. The book, Green Energy Projects for the Evil Genius, has more complete directions for more interesting solar projects that this book.
